Upper Respiratory InfectionThe main purpose of the study is to find out if probiotics (healthy bacteria found in yogurt) can improve the health-related quality of life (HRQL) during upper respiratory infections (like the common cold) in college students living in residence hall on-campus at Framingham State University (Framingham, MA) who are randomized to receive a probiotic or placebo candy daily for 12 weeks. HRQL is a subjective measure, defined as the aspects of quality of life (i.e., one's satisfaction with their life) that related specifically to a person's health (for example, ability to carry out normal daily activities). The investigators hypothesize that HRQL during URIs will be significantly higher in the probiotic groups compared to the placebo group. The proposed study will also seek to address the following secondary objectives: missed school and work days due to a upper respiratory infection.

SurgeryPediatric patients between 6months and 6years old will be included. They are scheduled for elective general or urologic surgery at a single tertiary medical center. Before the operation, the researcher interviews the parents of the pediatric patients to check whether they have the upper respiratory tract infection and asks them to fill out a questionnaire about the severity of their symptoms. The researcher will get the symptom score of the upper respiratory tract infection in the questionnaire. The degree of anesthesia induced atelectasis is measured using lung ultrasound. Pulmonary ultrasound is performed after endotracheal intubation and at the end of the operation dividing the patient's thorax into 12 regions. The investigator grades the degree of atelectasis at each region form 0 to 3 points. After the end of the operation, check whether the respiratory adverse effects occurred during emergence and recovery at the post anesthesia care unit.

COVID-19 Respiratory InfectionRespiratory Virus Infection1 moreElderly people who have multiple health problems are at higher risk of illness from viral respiratory infections, such as influenza (the flu) and COVID-19. This is especially true for residents in long-term care because the usual methods of infection control (handwashing, mask-wearing, and distancing) are difficult to enforce due to the memory problems of many residents and the frequently shared common spaces. It can also be difficult to prevent the spread of viral infections within long-term care because many residents are unable to tell their caregivers when they are feeling ill. Also, some elderly people do not show typical symptoms of infection (like fever), instead they may suddenly become confused or weak. This study will test if a safe form of ultraviolet light (far-UVC) can be effective as an extra method of disinfection (in addition to usual manual cleaning) against airborne and surface viruses that can cause respiratory infections.
