Research on the Application and Mechanism of New Biological Probes in Biomedicine

TumorsCardiovascular Diseases9 more

Fluorescence is one of the most commonly used research and detection techniques in the field of biomedical science. The characteristics of fluorescent probe directly affect the performance and application of fluorescence analysis and imaging. Aggregation-Caused Quenching has limited the application of traditional fluorescent probes to some extent. This project intends to systematically evaluate the detection efficiency of new methods through the detection of biomarkers in clinical samples and the comparison with the detection methods of traditional biomarkers, so as to provide theoretical and experimental basis for the establishment of fast and simple biomarker detection technologies with new biological probes.

Developing a PROM for Recurrent Urinary Tract Infection

Urologic DiseasesPatient Satisfaction3 more

This study aims to develop and validate the first set of patient-reported outcome measures for recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI): the Recurrent UTI Symptom Scale and the Recurrent UTI Impact Questionnaire. These tools could be used in clinical practice, clinical trials and research to gather an insight into a patient's perspective of their recurrent UTI symptom severity and its impact on their life, as well as determining any possible improvement or other change in their condition due to interventions (e.g. antibiotic treatment).

Efficacy of Contrast Enhanced Voiding Urosonography for Urodynamic Studies

MyelomeningoceleNeurogenic Bladder5 more

The investigators will assess the feasibility of replacing fluoroscopy/iodinated contrast with ultrasound/sulfur hexafluoride lipid-type A microspheres during routine urodynamic studies.

The Utility of Enhanced Pre and Post-surgical Work-out to Prevent the Spread of COVID-19 in a Large...

COVID-19Urologic Diseases2 more

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 hit Spain in March 2020, most of the elective surgeries have been canceled everywhere. As soon as the epidemiology phase of the pandemic changed and the restrictions have been eased, different protocols have been put in place to screen patients for SARS-CoV-2 before surgery in order to reduce the spreading of the disease in hospitalized patients. To the best of the current state of knowledge, no recommendations or protocols have been established to guide surgeons in dealing with patients developing unspecific symptoms after surgeries, which could sign either of a post-op complication or COVID-19. The investigators have developed an enhanced pre and post-surgical protocol both to screen patients for COVID-19 before surgery and to promptly identify those patients suspicious for the viral infection during the post-op.

Pharmacology and Physiology of the Lower Urinary Tract

Urologic Diseases

The function of the lower urinary tract is simple - urine storage and voiding. However, despite this simplicity of function, the control of the lower urinary tract is a rather complex, multilevel process (urothelium, detrusor, peripheral nerves, spinal cord and higher cerebral centres) and the mechanisms involved remain poorly elucidated. This study is designed to gain a more in depth understanding of the lower urinary tract function. Using bladder biopsies, tissue staining for characteristic markers present on nerves and other cells will be performed. We hypothesize that certain markers are altered in disease and turn back towards the control level of healthy people or patients with successful medical treatment.
