Recurrent Urinary Tract Infection

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common bacterial infections in women. 50% of women experiencing at least one UTI in their lifetime with an annual prevalence of 0.5-0.7%. An interventional, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study will be conducted to investigate the effect of a probiotic strains on the urinary tract microbiota in participants with recurrent urinary tract infection (rUTI). The study duration will be 6 and a half months, including 6 months product intake. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of the three study groups: control group with placebo administration, probiotic administration group (1 dose) and probiotic administration group (2 doses).

Antibiotic Prophylaxis for Bladder Botox

Idiopathic Overactive BladderPostoperative Urinary Tract Infection

Injection of Botox into the bladder is a common treatment for overactive bladder. Postoperative bladder infection is one of the more frequently reported complications of this procedure. Prophylactic antibiotics given at the time of bladder Botox for the reduction of postoperative bladder infection have not been well studied. The main goal of our study is to determine if prophylactic antibiotics at the time of bladder Botox injection for the treatment of overactive bladder in women reduces postoperative bladder infection. The investigators are proposing a study which will randomize participants into two groups - one receiving Ciprofloxacin and the other receiving placebo pills for three days following the procedure. The primary outcome evaluated will be the difference in postoperative bladder infection between the two groups. The investigators will also investigate differences in reported side effects between the two groups possibly related to antibiotic use. Follow-up will be over six weeks following the procedure.

Women over the age of 60 years have an estimated 10 to 15 % risk of recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI). This is believed to be due to hormonally induced changes in the vaginal flora associated with menopause. After menopause, there is a chemical changes in the vagina that may predispose to bacterial infections. The role of vaginal estrogen creams to restore vaginal atrophy and prevent urinary tract infections has been well characterized. Vaginal testosterone (VT) application use in postmenopausal breast cancer patients on aromatase inhibitors have been shown to improve vaginal pH, vaginal atrophy symptom scores, dyspareunia, and vaginal dryness. Although testosterone has been used to improve sexual function in postmenopausal women, the effects of VT on vaginal flora and recurrent UTIs are unknown. The purpose of this study is to determine whether topically applied vaginal testosterone cream is more effective than placebo in reducing the incidence of urinary tract infections in postmenopausal women with recurrent urinary tract infections and to ascertain the effects of topical estrogen on the vaginal pH and flora.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) with extended-spectrum -lactamase (ESBL)-positive Enterobacteriums (ESBL-E) are a common infectious complication of renal transplant recipients, with 10% of patients suffering from UTIs with ESBL-E within the first year posttransplant. Moreover, recurrence rates of UTI caused by ESBL-E are almost three times higher than those by cephalosporin-susceptible Enterobacteriums demonstrating the decreased efficacy of antibiotics in the treatment of these UTIs.

Urological pathogens are effected by rising antimicrobial resistance rates due to the frequent use of antimicrobials for treatment and prophylaxis. Intravesical instillation with hyaluronic acid (HA) and chondroitin sulphate (CS) obtained positive outcomes in the treatment of overactive bladder, radiation cystitis and interstitial cystitis by replenishment of the glycosaminoglycan layer of the bladder. This study is to investigate whether intravesical instillation with HA-CS in patients with recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTI) is superior to a placebo instillation in terms of reduction of rate of symptomatic urinary tract infections (UTIs) (based on clinical diagnosis) needing treatment with antimicrobials within 12 months after randomisation.

Urinary Tract Infections

This is a Phase 2/3 superiority study of LBP-EC01, a recombinant bacteriophage cocktail, with an initial 3-arm pharmacokinetic (PK) lead-in portion of 30 patients to evaluate the optimal dosing regimen to be used in the subsequent 550 patient portion of the study which will be randomized 1:1 comparing LBP-EC01 + antibiotic versus placebo + antibiotic in patients with a history of prior urinary tract infection (UTI) cased by E. coli. All patients will be required to have an active acute uncomplicated UTI at baseline.
