Comparison of Efficacy Between Piracetam and Dimenhydrinate in Patients With Peripheral Vertigo...
Peripheral VertigoThis study aims to investigate efficacy of two different intravenous drugs (dimenhydrinate and piracetam) in the symptomatic management of peripheral vertigo. The patients will be randomized in two groups according to symptomatic treatment modalities: Dimenhydrinate (100 mg) and piracetam (2 g) will be given in 100 cc normal saline in 30 minutes. Each patient will be asked if her/his vertigo symptoms resolved or not, according to a numeric rating scale (0=no vertigo, 10=worst possible vertigo). The patient will be rate the intensity of symptoms in the following times: Numeric rating scale (1 to 10): Admission Numeric rating scale (1 to 10): After the study drug (No ambulation)* Numeric rating scale (1 to 10): After the study drug (Ambulation)* Ambulation refers to head movements or walking in the room, if applicable.
Comparison of Efficacy Dimenhydrinate and Metoclopramide in the Treatment of Nausea Due to Vertigo...
NauseaVomiting1 moreVertigo complaint is one of the common cause of patients who applied to emergency services. Patients who have applied to emergency services with vertigo complaint mostly have nausea as an additionally symptom to this complaint and anti-emetic agents can be used in their treatments very often. The investigators purpose is to investigate the advantages of Dimenhydrinate and metoclopramide to each other in the treatment of vertigo and the vertigo accompanied by nausea
Chlorobutanol, Potassium Carbonate, and Irrigation in Cerumen Removal
Ear InfectionHearing Loss1 moreAccumulation of cerumen in the external ear canal is a common problem. The presence of cerumen not only interferes with the clinician's view of the tympanic membrane, but may also result in hearing loss and vertigo, and may predispose to ear infections. Removal of cerumen is facilitated by the use of a variety of ceruminolytics, or wax solvents. The current study was designed to evaluate the ceruminolytic effects of a single, brief application of the two most frequently used products in the investigators area, containing chlorobutanol or potassium carbonate with or without irrigation in the primary care setting in a randomized, single-blind trial. To our knowledge, this is the first randomized study comparing ceruminolytics with chlorobutanol versus potassium carbonate.
Emergency Department Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy for Dizziness and Vertigo
DizzinessVertigoED-VeRT will enroll up to 125 adult emergency department (ED) patients presenting with a chief complaint of dizziness or vertigo to collect longitudinal outcomes over 3 months of follow-up. This will include 50 patients who were evaluated by an ED physical therapist (ie, vestibular rehabilitation) during their ED visit and 50 patients who received usual care. The aims of this trial are to: (1) obtain initial estimates of participant recruitment and retention, intra-cluster correlation, and between-group outcome differences that will inform sample size calculation for a future randomized clinical trial, and (2) assess feasibility and fidelity of a clinical classification protocol for undifferentiated dizziness among patients receiving ED vestibular rehabilitation.
Treatment of Apogeotropic Horizontal Canal Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo
HC-BPPVThe purpose of this study was to compare the immediate efficacies of each treatment maneuvers in treatment of apogeotropic horizontal canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (HC-BPPV).
Study of Lamotrigine to Treat Ménière's Disease
Meniere's DiseaseMénière's Vertigo4 moreThis double-blinded study evaluates the frequency of vertigo attacks and the quality of life of patients diagnosed with Ménière's disease after being randomly assigned to take a placebo or lamotrigine.
Gaze and Postural Stability in Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple SclerosisVertigo2 moreIn order to provide information that will improve therapy, the goals of this project are to determine if persons with MS with complaints of dizziness and at risk for falls can improve their balance and vision stability as a result of a bout of specific treatment. This project seeks to do this by conducting an experiment where people with MS are randomly assigned to a group that practices activities known to help improve inner ear function or a group that practices activities known to improve endurance and strength but that should not change inner ear function. Such a comparison will allow us to gain understanding of how the inner ear system is affected in MS and how it responds to treatment.
The Relationship Between Dizziness and Neck Pain
DizzinessVertigo1 moreBoth dizziness and neck pain are common complaints in the Norwegian population. The cervical spine has a highly developed proprioceptive system, which is involved in head and gaze stabilization as well as postural control. Thus, it has been argued that dizziness and/or unsteadiness can occur due to loss of or inadequate stimulation of neck receptors in patients with neck pain. Still, the notion of dizziness due to cervical dysfunction is a controversial topic. However, clinicians report that patients referred for dizziness often complain of neck pain, and vice versa. This study is a multi-center study including patients referred to 1) a neuro-otologic clinic due to dizziness and 2) a rehabilitation clinic due to neck pain. Both clinics are tertiary care university clinics. The study explores the prevalence, severity and spectrum of symptoms as well as clinical findings in patients with various combinations of dizziness and neck pain. The aim is to see if these patient groups differ from each other in terms of clinical characteristics, symptoms and quality of life. Additionally, the aim is to examine if there is a relationship between neck dysfunction and dizziness, and last, if the symptoms persist longer in patients with both dizziness and neck pain.
Objective Examination and Rehabilitation Treatment of Patients With BPPV
Postural VertigoVertigo6 moreDizziness (BPPV) causes severe deterioration in quality of life, incoordination, and instability. In the study, we selected a minimum of 100 patients with BPPV who were examined after specialist care. After the acute phase, a physical survey is performed where movement and coordination are examined. After the results, the patients undergo a rehabilitation training. The workout is submaximal and high intensity that is done for 3 weeks. Hypothesis: As a result of training, it is possible that the remaining feeling of dizziness and insecurity, impaired coordination will decrease or disappear.
Internet-based Self-help Program for Vestibular Rehabilitation in Chronic Dizziness
VertigoChronic dizziness,or persistent positional perceptual dizziness (PPPS) is a common condition that results in impaired quality of life and work ability of those affected. Vestibular Rehabilitation (VR) is an evidence-based and recommended treatment for chronic dizziness. The treatment involves training in specific exercises that challenge the balance system and eventually improve dizziness. The main challenge with this treatment is that it is usually best provided with individual follow-up of therapists trained in the method. Limited resources and the lack of dissemination of this knowledge mean that only a minority of patients receive adequate treatment. An internet-based self-help program in vestibular rehabilitation has been developed in Norwegian with demonstration and instructions of exercises. The program has six lessons, together lasting for six weeks. Patients are given the opportunity to exercise at home, without the use of treatment resources and without spending time traveling to the treatment site. Patients will have access through their general practitioner or health institution at no extra cost. If it turns out that the program works according to the intention, the investigators will be able to offer VR to a large number of PPPS patients who previously would not receive treatment for their condition. The aim of the pilot study is to find out if the internet program for PPPS works as intended and evaluate incoming data and make changes to the program. In addition, the investigators will gain experience in using the program before designing a randomized clinical trial (RCT). The aim of such an RCT would be to compare this internet based treatment to traditional treatment.
