Study of the Effectiveness of Vestibular Stimulation as a Coadjuvant Treatment in Major Depression...
DepressionMajor Depression1 moreMajor depression is characterized by vestibular anomalies. The investigators hypothesized that vestibular stimulation will improve depression symptoms in major depression patients.
Vestibular Rehabilitation in Patients With Vestibular Migraine
Vestibular MigraineVestibular Disorder1 moreAbstract: Introduction: Vestibular migraine(VM) is a disease that manifests with episodic vertigo attacks in patients with or without migraine type headaches, when present accompanying the headaches. Its prevalence was found out as %1 in a study in Germany. It usually involves middle aged women. VM can make a huge impact on quality of life, therefore advances in its diagnosis and management are valuable. While pharmacotherapy that is being used in migraine can be beneficial, vestibular rehabilitation(VR) programmes are predicted to be one of the most important types of treatment in management of VM. This study compares the results of pharmacological management options and vestibular rehabilitation programmes in the context of dizziness, balance problems and headache. Material and methods: 77 patients with VM were included in study, and 60 of them completed it. While one group took only VR programme, and another took only pharmacological prophylaxis. The third group took a combined therapy, and the groups were consisted of 20 patients. Patients were assessed with caloric tests, audiometric studies, static posturography, Dizziness Handicap Inventory(DHI), and Activities Specific Balance Confidence(ABC) scales. All of the assessments were applied 3 times throughout the study, and the results were compared with relevant statistical tests.
Testing an Intraoral Electronic Balance Aid for Vestibular Imbalance
Vestibular DisorderThe human body uses vestibular feedback in coordination with visual and somatosensory information to maintain balance and posture. However, various inner-ear disorders due to aging, drug toxicity, viral infections, and injury, etc., may result in loss of vestibular feedback, which makes it difficult for an individual to maintain balance. This study investigates the use of a hidden and noninvasive balance device EquiCue™ V1 developed by Innervo Technology for vestibular substitution. EquiCue™ V1 is a retainer-like intraoral electronic balance aid entirely worn inside the oral cavity and provides in-situ sensory feedback of head tilting and motion on the roof of the mouth. The feedback is delivered by applying small and controlled electrical pulses at precise locations on the palatal surface according to an encoded pattern. This pilot study is to determine how this alternative sensory feedback on the roof of the mouth can be used to improve balance for patients with vestibular loss.
Spatial Cognitive Training for Chronic Vestibular Disorders
Vestibular AbnormalityCognitive TrainingIn this study the investigators propose to apply cognitive training, which has been largely used in the realm of age-related cognitive decline, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease, in a novel clinical context to individuals with vestibular impairment. In prior work the investigators observed that individuals with vestibular loss have evidence of spatial cognitive impairment. The investigators plan to evaluate the preliminary efficacy and feasibility of a cognitive training program in a sample of participants with chronic vestibular impairment who display deficits in spatial ability. The cognitive training program will focus on visuospatial skills and will be used as an adjunct to traditional vestibular physical therapy (VPT).
Vestibular Infants Screening-Flanders
Vestibular DisorderHearing Impaired ChildrenHearing-impaired children are at risk for a vestibular impairment, as the auditory and vestibular end organs are closely related. Although this can compromise a child's development on many levels, vestibular testing is not routinely performed in this vulnerable group. This project aims to give each congenitally hearing-impaired child in Flanders (Belgium) access to a basic vestibular screening at a young age and set an example for other regions worldwide.
The Liberatory Maneuver for the Treatment of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
VertigoVestibular DiseaseThis study is being done because the investigators would like to know how effective the Liberatory maneuver is in treating benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).
Effect of Caffeine Intake in Vestibular Function
VertigoDiseases2 moreObjective: Assess the effect of caffeine in the following vestibular function tests: Cervical Vestibular Evoked Potential (cVEMP), Ocular Vestibular Evoked Potential(oVEMP) and Caloric Test. Methods: Randomized, prospective triple-blind, placebo controlled clinical trial. All participants underwent otoscopy, tympanometry, responded to the Profile of Mood State (POMS), submitted to the cVEMP, oVEMP and caloric tests. After that they received placebo or caffeine capsule (300mg) and repeated the procedures 45 minutes after.
4-Aminopyridine, Atenolol, or Placebo in Patients With Vestibular Migraine
Vestibular MigraineMigraine Disorders1 moreThis phase 2 randomized study will be used to test the efficacy of 4-aminopyridine (4AP) or atenolol to reduce severity and frequency of vestibular and headache symptoms of vestibular migriane sufferers. Blinded study drug will be taken by mouth twice a day for 14 weeks on study.
The Use of the PoNS™ Device in the Treatment of Blunt and Blast Induced Vestibular Disorders
Hearing and Vestibular DisordersTraumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major worldwide health issue. Figures from the Centers for Disease control show that 1.7 million people suffer a TBI annually. Meanwhile the World Health Organization recognizes TBI as one of the most significant health issues in developing countries. In the military, mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is one of the most frequent sequela of modern war. Dizziness and balance disorders are the most frequent sequela of mTBI and account for a significant degree of mTBI morbidity. At the current time, the best treatment modality for dizziness secondary to mTBI is vestibular rehabilitation (VR). While VR is effective, the therapy is time consuming, not universally successful, and results in incomplete recovery by many patients. Work needs to be done in an attempt to improve therapy outcomes. This project will study the use of neuromodulation (through stimulation of the tongue) as an adjuvant to improve the effectiveness of VR and reduce the time involved in VR. Given past work with variants on this minimal medical impact appliance, using the PoNS™ device to augment therapy may result in a significant improvement in VR outcomes. Given the enormous public health and military burden of mTBI, and given that dizziness is a major component often responsible for significant morbidity, this project has significant military and civilian impact and can be beneficial to those who suffer mTBI worldwide.
Does Vestibular System Effected in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients
Vestibular Disorder. The main question is whether the vestibular system is affected by COPD. If there is an influence, the second question is what is the relationship between balance and vestibular interaction in COPD patients. A total of 10 COPD patients and 10 healthy adults will include the study. Respiratory functions, vestibular functions and postural stability of participants will be assessed. This research is planned to be carried out as a cross-sectional/descriptive research. It's planned as a pilot study. Comparisons between study and control groups will be made with independent samples t-test for parametric values and Mann Whitney U for non-parametric values.
