Central Visual ImpairmentThe purpose of this study is to evaluate reading performance in the visual periphery by simulating central vision loss using a computer-controlled gaze-contingent display with an eye tracker. Participants will read a page of text at a comfortable rate. Several manipulations hypothesized to improve reading will be tested, such as an inverted-text "spotlight" of a single word that follows the participant's gaze.

Although China is one of the countries that can provide rehabilitation services for patients with visual impairment, due to restrictions on the number of professionals in various regions, uneven diagnosis and treatment, and regional differences in economic conditions, not all visually impaired patients can get the rehabilitation of assisting device fitting. Traditional statistical methods were not enough to solve the problem of intelligent fitting of assisting devices. At present, there are almost no intelligent fitting models of assisting devices in the world. Therefore, in order to allow more low-vision patients to receive accurate and rapid rehabilitation services, we conducted a cross-sectional study on the assisting devices fitting for low-vision patients in Fujian Province, China in the past five years, and at the same time constructed a machine learning model to intelligently predict the adaptation result of the basic assisting devices for low vision patients.
Measuring of Neuro-visual Functionality With Ocusweep
Visual ImpairmentThe aim of this study is to measure visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and visual field by SAP-method using a novel device Ocusweep compared to currently widely used methods. Addition to that, the aim is to validate a novel perimetry method (Visual Search Test, VST) which is based on reaction times in visual decision- making task, where the subject is allowed to move eyes and where the fixation is verified by the subject himself in contrast to standard automatic perimetry (SAP) where prolonged stationary fixation and external fixation monitoring apparatus is required. Reaction-time based visual field device Ocusweep is compared to generally used SAP methods. Those tests will be done for healthy volunteers and for persons with diagnosed eye or brain disease. Ocusweep OcuRT vision based choice reaction time test is validated for test repeatability and compared to Trail Making Test (TMT), Useful Field of View (UFOV) and Vienna Test System (VTS) reaction time tests. To evaluate the ability to detect unreliable results, OcuRT test is also done under cognitive load and with instructions to cheat the test.
Implantation of Add on Lens for Age Related Macular Degeneration Patients With Low Vision
Inclusion CriteriaAge related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in patients older than 55 years old. AMD can present as dry AMD or wet AMD. In most cases AMD affects both eyes although in many cases it's asymmetrical as far as severity. Some patients require low vision aids to continue their daily life tasks. In the past a few attempts were made to use low vision intraocular lenses with corrective glasses without enough success. In addition telescopic and prismatic lenses were also tried. The difficulties with these lenses included low field of vision, unsatisfactory magnification, complicated surgical technique and high complication rates. Recently an add on lens was designed for the sulcus for implantation in pseudophakic AMD patients. The add on lens doubles the magnification of the central image dependent on the reading distance and the anatomy of the eye. The lens is acrylic hydrophobic and designed for implantation in the sulcus either in pseudophakic patients or in addition to an intraocular lens implanted during a routine cataract surgery. The lens is 13 mm wide with 4 symmetric haptics. The lens has 1.5 mm central part of 10 diopters and the rest of the lens has no optical power. Our purpose is to study implantation of the lenses in AMD patients to improve their reading ability and to improve their daily living.
