Pancreatic Islet Transplantation to the Anterior Chamber of the Eye

Type 1 DiabetesVisual Impairment

This is a phase II prospective, interventional, open-labeled, proof-of-concept study. 2 years per participant, 2 years 6 months in total Total n=6 The primary objective is to assess the safety of human pancreatic islet transplantation into the ACE of participants with T1D. Safety analyses will involve examination of the incidence, severity, and type of treatment emergent AEs reported, and changes in vital signs, ophthalmic status and laboratory test results from baseline (Day 0 pre-transplantation) to specified time points throughout the study.

Feasibility and Efficacy of Assisstive Tactile and Auditory Communicating Devices

Visual Impairment

This pilot study will integrate multi-sensor fusion techniques (software) to effectively combine information obtained from the newly embedded infrared, ultrasound, and stereo-camera-based sensor systems (hardware) that are implemented into the VIS4ION platform. The core of this technology is based on 4 components: (1) a wearable vest with several distinct range and image sensors embedded. These sensors extract pertinent information about obstacles and the environment, which are conveyed to (2) a haptic interface (belt) that communicates this spatial information to the end-user in real-time via an intuitive, ergonomic and personalized vibrotactile re-display along the torso. (3) A smartphone serves as a connectivity gateway and coordinates the core components through WiFi, bluetooth, and/or 4G LTE, (4) a headset that contains both binaural, open-ear, bone conduction speakers (leaving the ear canal patent for ambient sounds) and a microphone for oral communication-based voice recognition during use of a virtual personal assistant (VPA). Blindfolded-sighted, and blind subjects in a real-world, combined obstacle avoidance / navigation task will serve as an independent measure of overall improvements in the system as well as a roadmap for future avenues to enhance performance. Further, a prospective, randomized crossover, controlled, non-blinded phase will be conducted in Thailand as part of this study to compare and evaluate effectiveness of the wearable vest for increasing navigation and quality of life.

Accessible Weight Loss for Adults With Low Vision: A Feasibility Study

Overweight and Obesity

This study will examine the feasibility of an all-remote approach to enrollment in and implementation of an 8-week weight loss program for adults with low vision. The weight loss program will provide asynchronous support (information, automated texting feedback, tailored emails) for adopting and maintaining lifestyle-based strategies for safe and effective weight loss.

Shanghai Eye Study for Adults

Blindness,Visual ImpairmentRefractive Error3 more

Blindness and visual impairment severely impact the visual health and life quality of people, particularly the 2.566 million senior citizens aged at 65 and above in Shanghai. The main reason is uncorrected refractive error, of which, 62.1% can be solved through refractive correction. For this reason, the uncorrected refractive errors of 154,000 senior citizens in Shanghai can be taken as a priority among the public health issues to prevent blindness. Now, with the aim to reduce the prevalence rate of blindness and visual impairment, it is planned to establish a public health service mechanism in terms of refractive error screening and correction for the elderly by relying on Shanghai's three-level (city-district-community) eye diseases prevention network, using proper refractive correction technology, and moving related services forward to communities in order to screen, identity, and correct blindness and visual impairment caused by refractive errors as early as possible.

Touching the World With a Cane: Cognitive and Neural Processes

Visual ImpairmentHealthy

The use of tools is ubiquitous in our lives and allows us to expand the sensorimotor capacities of our body. Much research has been done on the subject in sighted people over the past decades. This work has mainly focused on the motor aspect of using the tool, neglecting the sensory aspect. However, any action involving a tool carries sensory information, for example in the use of the white cane by blind people. 26% (> 200,000) of blind people in France use a white cane to get around. By sweeping the cane on the ground, they use it as a sensorimotor extension of their body to extract information from the environment in order to locate a pedestrian crossing or possible obstacles. While it is well established that the tools increase the user's motor skills, we have only just begun to clarify how they also function as sensory extensions of the user's body and how this phenomenon is potentially dependent on constant use of the tool to compensate for a missing sense, as is the case with blind people using a cane. The aim of this study is to fill this important gap in our knowledge.

Observational Study to Evaluate Fluid Resolution and Effectiveness in Patients Receiving Beovu in...

Neovascular Age-related Macular Degeneration (nAMD)Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)

This study is a prospective, non-interventional, multicenter, open-label study in nAMD and DME patients being treated with brolucizumab according to the EU SmPC. An observational study design, without a strict, mandated visit schedule or mandated treatment regimen was chosen as the most appropriate to collect available data in a real life setting. For that reason, this NIS does not impose a therapy protocol, diagnostic/therapeutic procedure or a visit schedule. The diagnostic or monitoring procedures are only those ordinarily applied to the therapeutic strategy and to routine clinical care and will take place as per investigator's discretion. This includes e.g. visit frequency, injection frequency and types of assessments performed - only data from routine medical practice will be collected as part of the study.

Development of a Multi-sensory Rehabilitation Program for People With Ultra Low Vision

Low Vision BlindnessVisual Impairment2 more

This research is aimed to address one of the big gaps in the current vision rehabilitation protocols for people with profound visual impairment by evaluating a multisensory approach. There are a growing number of clinical trials that recruit people with end-stage eye diseases and the rehabilitation plan following various treatments is not clear. It is important to address this in order to maximize the efficacy of such treatments and to improve the quality of life in people with profound visual impairment.

Obstacle Negotiation in Older People With and Without Vision Impairment

Low Vision

Falls are common among people with vision impairment and can lead to devastating health consequences. Understanding the functions of vision and how the visual characteristics of obstacles in the walking path impact the gait of people with vision impairment is necessary to create strategies to prevent falls in this population. The purpose of this study is to determine how adults with vision impairment change their gait behavior when stepping over obstacles that vary in height and contrast to the ground. We will then determine the mechanisms of gaze behavior that correlate to the gait behavior.
