Validity of at Home Visual Acuity Measurements for Telemedicine During Corona Virus (COVID-19) Pandemic...

Visual Impairment

Prompted by the current COVID-19 pandemic, the American Academy of Ophthalmology has recommended the use of telemedicine to continue ophthalmic care while maintaining patient and provider social distancing. As part of remote examinations, patients may be expected to perform home eye testing for visual acuity and the use of various home visual acuity charts have been proposed to provide clinicians with this vital data. However, the use of home visual acuity exams has not been validated in our patient population. This project aims to determine the efficacy and validity of measuring visual acuity at home with a printed-out ETDRS chart.

iVision - Development of a Game-based Therapy for Children With Cerebral Visual Impairment

Visual Perceptual Weakness (Disorder)Cerebral Visual Impairment

The objective of the present study is to develop a therapeutic, adaptive, and enjoyable game that will be used by children with CVI between the mental age of 3 and 12 years. Such a game will be easy to use and implement by the children, their parents, and therapists.

Low Vision Occupational Therapy in Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson Disease

The primary aim of this study is to determine whether low-vision occupational therapy improves quality of life in Parkinson's Disease (PD) patients. Low-vision occupational therapy has not been previously studied in PD patients, and we suspect that this is a beneficial treatment option for PD patients as vision impairment is common in the PD patient population. Our primary objective will assess whether quality of life was improved following a low-vision occupational therapy session.

Video Screening for Visual Impairment of Infants

Behavioral DynamicsVisual Impairment

An individual senses the world and reflects feedbacks via independent behaviors. Such precise collaboration of the sensory and behavioral systems is fundamental to survival and evolution. When a sensory modality is altered, the behavioral system has the potential to fit in a substitute modality. However, the specific dynamics of human behaviors in response to sensory loss remain largely unknown due to the paucities of representative situations and large-scale samples. Here, the investigators focused on thousands of human infants who suffered varying degrees of visual stimuli deficiency in early stages, while their behavioral systems remained sensitive and thus retained high behavioral plasticity. Having access to this unique population provides an unprecedented opportunity to investigate the effect of diverse visual conditions on the behavioral system and develop a domestic apparatus for screening visual impariment of infants.

Turkish Validity and Reliability of the Visual Function Classification System (VFCS)

Cerebral PalsyVisual Impairment4 more

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common childhood disorder that occurs with a lesion in the developing infant brain, seen in 2-3/1000 live births. CP is a posture, movement and tone disorder that occurs due to prenatal or postnatal causes. It is not progressive, but since the anatomy of the lesion and the physical development of the individual are not completed, the course of the disorder may vary throughout life. Accompanied by motor dysfunctions, it varies according to clinical types. In addition to this, various visual, sensory and behavioral problems, speech disorders that cause learning difficulties and cognitive problems can also be observed. Ophthalmic disorders are the most common problem in CP and can also affect the developmental process of the patient. Since ophthalmic disorders and neurological deficits are associated in CP, the relationship between neurological disorder and ophthalmic disorders has been investigated in the literature. The aim of this study is to establish the Turkish validity and reliability of the Visual Function Classification System (VFCS) specific to individuals with Cerebral Palsy (CP).

Visual and Functional Assessment in Low Vision Patients

Retinitis PigmentosaAge-related Macular Degeneration2 more

Vision testing is a fundamental part of every optometry and ophthalmology assessment. Traditional vision testing charts are not able to measure vision below a certain level. Vision in this range is classified as counting fingers (CF), hand movements (HM) and light perception (LP). These measures are not very accurate or easily quantifiable. They are also poorly understood in terms of impact on quality of life. This study aims to assess new methods for measuring the vision of patients with very low vision.

Randomized Controlled Trial Evaluating an Incentive-based Community Eye-care Programme

Visual Impairment

Elderly with visual impairment (VI) who undergo community eye screening often do not attend tertiary follow-up even if significant eye diseases are detected. Investigators evaluate an incentive-care scheme (ICS) to improve the attendance rates of tertiary eye-care visits of participants following community eye screening.

Brain Lesions in Relation to Motor Profiles of Children With Cerebral Visual Impairment.

Visual Pathway Diseases; Neuroimaging

The overall goal of this research proposal is the early prediction of the emergence of CVI and its characteristics on the basis of neuroimaging data. The different steps that will be taken to achieve this goal will be: To characterize CVI deficits in children; To correlate the CVI characteristics with their motor profiles; To characterize brain lesions in children with CVI; To link the motor profile, CVI profile and brain metrics of the children. Over the last 10 years, 488 children with and without CP have consulted at the CVI clinic in Leuven. All these children had a comprehensive visual perceptual assessment, cognitive evaluation and an ophthalmological assessment. Summarizing these data results in a quantitative visual perceptual profile for each individual patient. The goal is to prospectively extend this database to a number of 600 children. The project's primary objective is to relate the presence of CVI to the motor profiles of these children. Of these 488 children, 300 have an MRI available. The goal is to analyze the retrospective MRI data of this clinical group and to prospectively extend this database by reassuring newly registered children will receive MRI with DTI. This will allow the investigation of the correlation between the brain metrics and the CVI characteristics in a large cohort.

Falls Prevention for Visually Impaired Older People

Accidental FallVisual Impairment1 more

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of an intensive five day falls prevention training programme with a home evaluation and a home exercise programme, compared with a home evaluation and exercise programme alone for reducing incidence of falls and fear of falling, and improving confidence in functional ability and objective balance.

Tactile Low Vision Labeling of Ophthalmic Drops

Low Vision Aids

The purpose of this study is an evaluation of a tactile labeling strategy developed in the Ophthalmology Clinical Research Center at University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in collaboration with the UTMB Maker Space to improve low vision patients capability to identify their topical ophthalmic drop treatments and the frequency with which they should be administered. The labeling strategy includes protrusions as frequency markers and shapes to differentiate between treatments of similar frequency prescription.
