Vitamin D Supplementation in Intensive Care Unit Patients

Dietary SupplementsIntensive Care Unit2 more

A randomized controlled trial is designed to investigate the safety and clinical efficacy of a mega dose of VD in patients admitted in intensive care unit (ICU). Patients will be randomly allocated to receive 400,000 IU of VD3 or placebo. They will be followed up until ICU discharge or death or the 15th day of ICU stay. Adverse events that occur during ICU stay is collected. Primary outcome is intensive care unit-acquired infection (ICU-AI), and secondary outcomes are septic shock, organ failure, and ICU-mortality. Plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D is assessed at baseline and at the end of follow-up. Cox regression models will be applied to test how VD supplementation affects adverse outcomes while adjusting for confounders.

Effect of Consumption of Yogurt Fortified in Calcium and Vit. D on Circulating Levels of 25OHD in...

MenopauseVitamin D Deficiency

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of daily consumption of one or two CALIN+ pot(s) versus no intake of product, after 4, 8, 12 and 16 weeks, on the evolution of the serum concentration of 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25OHD) (D2 + D3) in postmenopausal women.

Impact of Maternal Body Weight on Vitamin D Status During Pregnancy

ObesityVitamin D Deficiency

Research shows high levels of vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women in Northern Ireland. Body composition is a determinant of vitamin D status. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin and therefore may be hidden within the adipose/fat tissue in overweight/obese individuals. All pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to take a daily supplement containing 10μg vitamin D. The investigators hypothesise that overweight/ obese pregnant women have a lower vitamin D status than their leaner counterparts at the start of pregnancy and may need a higher daily supplementation to achieve a sufficient status. The investigators propose a randomised supplementation study where pregnant women (n 240) from the Western Health and Social Care Trust Area will be invited to take part. Inclusion criteria: pregnant women first trimester, without current pregnancy related complications, singleton pregnancy, aged ≥18 years, with Body Mass Index (BMI) > 18.5kg /m². Participants will be randomised to receive either 0μg (placebo) plus a multivitamin or 10μg vitamin D plus a multivitamin from 12 weeks gestation until delivery. The multivitamin already contains 10μg vitamin D; Therefore participants will be randomised to receive a total of 10μg or 20μg vitamin D. Blood samples (20mls) will be taken at 12, 28 and 36 weeks gestation. A sample of blood will be taken from the cord after delivery. Vitamin D status is the main outcome measurement. All blood samples will be analysed for vitamin D and other associated metabolites. Data will be collected on health and lifestyle, supplementation use and food intake. Body composition measurements will be recorded at each appointment and infant anthropometric measurements will be taken from the maternal notes after delivery. Findings from this research will be used to inform nutrition policy on appropriate vitamin D supplementation levels in pregnancy which may be dependent upon pre pregnancy BMI.

The 'Hidden' Biological Impact of Vitamin D Deficiency: a Biomarker Study; Part 2

Vitamin D Deficiency

The investigators major aims are to: determine the vitamin D status of a group of young, apparently healthy adults in Hong Kong; examine inter-relationships between vitamin D status and biomarkers of DNA damage and repair, oxidative stress, inflammation and endothelial health; and, in part 2 of the study, investigate effects of improvement in vitamin D status on these biomarkers and other measures of well-being in those young adults shown to be deficient in vitamin D.

Availability of Vitamin D in Orange Juice

Vitamin D Deficiency

The purpose of this study was to determine whether vitamin D2 and vitamin D3 in orange juice are effective at raising vitamin D levels in the blood and if vitamin D2 and vitamin D3 in orange juice raised blood levels of 25(OH)D as well as vitamin D3 and vitamin D2 supplements.

Vitamin D and Adipose Tissue Inflammation

Vitamin D DeficiencyObesity2 more

Chronic, low-grade adipose tissue inflammation is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus. The cause of adipose tissue inflammation has remained largely unclear. We hypothesize that vitamin D deficiency predisposes individuals to the development of adipose tissue inflammation, and that treatment of vitamin D deficient subjects with high dose vitamin D will reduce adipose tissue inflammation.

Effect of Consumption of Post-harvest UV-B Treated Mushrooms on Vitamin D Status of Healthy Adults...

Vitamin D Deficiency

This study will investigate whether mushrooms treated with ultraviolet (UV) light to increase their vitamin D2 content are actually a good source of vitamin D when consumed daily with a meal (lunch). The mushrooms will be provided cooked along with a meal which will be a standard, pre-packaged frozen meal. We also hope to learn if the resulting improvement in vitamin D status affects the immune system by decreasing it's level of activation, which may be abnormally elevated in vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D Supplementation in Overweight/Obese African American Adults and Youth (D-SUNNY)

Vitamin D Deficiency

Primary Specific Aim 1: To compare the dose-responsive effects of vitamin D3 supplementations on 25(OH) D, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and serum/urine calcium. Primary Specific Aim 2: To compare the dose-responsive effects of vitamin D3 supplementations on non-invasive vascular measures including pulse wave velocity (PWV), flow-mediated dilation (FMD), carotid arterial compliance (CAC), carotid Intima-Media Thickness (cIMT), and 24-hours Ambulatory Blood Pressure (ABP) monitoring as well as casual BP.

DementiaViral Infection1 more

Audit and Feedback (A&F), a strategy aimed at promoting modified practice through performance feedback, is a method to change provider behaviour and reduce unnecessary medical services. This study aims to assess the use of A&F to change: antibiotic prescribing for viral infections antipsychotic prescribing to patients with dementia routine measure of vitamin D in low risk adults annual screening blood tests (without direct indication by the risk profile of the patient)
