Vitamin D is so-called "sunshine vitamin",it is synthesized in the skin during exposure to the ultraviolet rays in sunlight so it has been suggested that ∼ 5-30 minutes of sun exposure between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. at least twice per week on the skin of the face, arms, back, or legs (without sunscreen) is usually adequate for vitamin D synthesis. Vitamin D is also found in plants (mainly mushrooms and yeast) and in a few foods such as fatty fish. Vitamin D supplement is recommended in all infants until enough formula, milk, or other food sources are ingested to sufficiently provide 400 IU/day to prevent vitamin D deficiency. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, and the self immune system plays a central role in the destruction of the beta cell of pancrease.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a common disease that occurs in 1 in 10,000 people every year. In the presence of this condition, the parathyroid glands produce excessive amounts of parathyroid hormone (PTH), which regulates calcium levels. The high levels of parathyroid hormone remove too much calcium from bones, and then deposit the excess calcium in the blood, which is then filtered into the urine by the kidneys. Bone health is threatened by excess calcium loss which weakens bone structure. Other affected organs include the skeleton (calcium loss leads to a "weakening" of the skeleton), and the kidneys (high blood calcium can lead to kidney stones). It is now evident that the majority of patients with even mild Primary Hyperparathyroidism are vitamin D deficient. In 2009, new international guidelines for the management of asymptomatic PHPT direct physicians to measure 25-hydroxyvitamin D (D3 or 25-OHD) in all patients, and to replete the reserve of vitamin D when the level is low (< 20 ng/ml). However, no recommendations for vitamin D repletion are given, because of limited data regarding the effects of vitamin D repletion, appropriate dosing and safety. Therefore, there is an urgent need for data upon which to base such recommendations, as well as are data on the effects of such treatment upon bones. Subjects with low vitamin D3 levels will be selected for this trial. They will be given enough vitamin D3 to raise their low blood levels from a low to a normal range. The assessments in this study, including the quadruple label bone biopsy, will allow us to document the short term effects of administering vitamin D3 on changes in bone. All participants enrolled in this trial will be vitamin D3 deficient. Participants will take an antibiotic (tetracycline) 4 times a day to mark the starting point from which bone changes will be assessed. After 3 days of tetracycline, a 12 week course of vitamin D3 or placebo will be initiated. Six of 7 participants will receive the study drug (active vitamin D3), while 1 in 7 will receive a placebo (sugar pill). Ten weeks later, another 3-day course of tetracycline will be given. At the end of 12 weeks, a bone biopsy will be done. A small piece of bone (about the size of a pencil eraser) will be removed from the hip (iliac crest). The bone will be analyzed to determine the effect of vitamin D3 on primary hyperparathyroidism. There will be 4 study visits: Screening, Baseline, Week 8, and Week 12 when the bone biopsy will be performed. It is uncertain whether vitD3 supplementation is beneficial for the remission of ulcerative colitis (UC). The effects of vitD3 supplements on the efficacy of vidrecizumab in Chinese UC patients were retrospectively analyzed. Methods: Patients with moderate to severe UC were recorded. These patients were initially treated with VDZ. VitD3 supplementation was defined as 400IU/d vitD3 supplementation during the first infusion of VDZ and continued throughout the follow-up period. Disease activity was assessed using the modified Mayo score.

The main questions it aims to answer are: Adipose tissue represents a storage environment for vitamin D or it's an environment where vitamin D is sequestered and no longer released On the other hands, it's possible to verify whether the adipose tissue carries out a bi-modal activity towards vitamin D If adipose tissue exerts a bi-modal effect, it is possible to identify a specific threshold between the two effects Participants will undergo anthropometric measurements (height, weight, waist/hip ratio waist circumference) at baseline and after 6 months of intake of cholecalciferol 50,000 IU/month

Oral Health and Vitamin D in Stroke Patients

Stroke is a common, serious and restrictive global health problem. Restricting the activities of daily living of stroke patients impairs patients' ability to pay attention to oral hygiene. Facial paresis and tongue weakness due to stroke may cause a decrease in the control of dental prostheses and the removal of food residues in the oral cavity. Food residues and saliva contaminated with bacteria as a result of poor oral hygiene can result in pneumonia when aspirated due to oropharyngeal dysphagia. In the literature, it has been shown that there are significant relationships between periodontal health and vitamin D and calcium intake, and that dietary supplementation with calcium and vitamin D can improve periodontal health, increase bone mineral density in the mandible, and inhibit alveolar bone resorption. In line with all these data, our hypothesis in this study is to investigate the relationship between oral health and vitamin D levels in stroke patients in rehabilitation units.

25-Hydroxyvitamin D Levels in Patients With Periodontitis (Stage III)

Periodontitis; is an inflammatory disease of tissues characterized by bone destruction around the teeth. Vitamin D plays an important role in several inflammatory diseases by promoting the expression of inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin IL-1, IL-6, and IL-1β, which are directly related to periodontal attachment loss and bone demineralization. These facts suggest that vitamin D may be associated with periodontal disease. Many studies have been conducted on the relationships between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels, periodontal disease, and tooth loss. However, as far as we know, there is no study on the relationship between periodontitis and free and bioavailable 25 (OH) vitamin D. In our study, over the age of 35; two groups will be formed, consisting of 40 healthy and 40 periodontitis individuals. Serum total 25 (OH) D level and vitamin D binding protein level will be analyzed by ELISA method, and bioavailable 25 (OH) D level will be calculated using total 25 (OH) D and vitamin D binding protein levels. The aim of this study; To evaluate the total, free and bioavailable 25 (OH) vitamin D levels of patients with periodontitis by comparing them with healthy controls, and to investigate whether bioavailable 25 (OH) D plays a role in the pathogenesis of periodontitis or can be a simple marker of disease activity in the light of these findings.

Vitamin D deficiency is common among otherwise healthy pregnant women and may have consequences for them as well as the early development and long-term health of their children. However, the importance of maternal vitamin D status has not been widely studied. The present study is divided into a societal experiment (1) and a case-cohort study (2): The present study includes an in-depth examination of the influence of exposure to vitamin D early in life and during critical periods of growth for development of type 1 diabetes (T1D), type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, obesity, asthma, arthritis, cancer, mental and cognitive disorders, congenital disorders, dental caries and bone fractures during child- and adulthood. The study is based on the fact that mandatory fortification of margarine with vitamin D, which initiated in 1937, was terminated in 1985. Apart from determining the influences of exposure prior to conception and during pre- and postnatal life, the investigators examined the importance of vitamin D exposure during specific seasons and trimesters, by comparing disease incidence among individuals born before and after the fortification. Additionally, a validated method was used to determine neonatal vitamin D status using stored dried blood spots (DBS) from individuals who develop the aforementioned disease entities as adults and their time and gender-matched controls. Unparalleled, the study will help determine the effects of vitamin D exposure during critical periods in life. There are a sufficient number of individuals to verify any effects during different gestation phases and seasons of the year. The results, which will change our current understanding of the significance of vitamin D, will enable new research in related fields, including interventional research designed to assess supplementation needs for different subgroups of pregnant women. Also, other health outcomes can subsequently be studied to generate multiple new interdisciplinary health research opportunities involving vitamin D.
