Do Nasogastric Tubes After Cardiac Surgery Reduce Nausea and Vomiting

Heart Disease

Gastric emptying is delayed after cardiac surgery, but the efficacy of the nasogastric (NG) tube in preventing distension and reducing vomiting is unclear. Nasogastric (NG) tubes are routinely used in patients undergoing surgery. They are presumed to reduce postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and to lessen the risk of aspiration by reducing residual gastric volumes; however, their insertion and use is not however without potentially serious complications. Existing literature does not address their efficacy in reducing PONV after cardiac surgery. However, current evidence suggests that up to 50% of patients in this group suffer significant nausea and vomiting. The objective of this study is to determine whether NG tubes should continue to be inserted routinely during cardiac surgery to reduce PONV.

Pharmacogenomics and Post-Operative Nausea and Vomiting

Postoperative Nausea

The Researchers overall goal is to evaluate the benefit and utility of preemptive genotypic data to guide post-operative nausea and vomiting treatment in the bariatric surgical population. The hypothesis is that using genotypic variation in CYP2D6 to select the appropriate 5HT3 serotonin receptor antagonist to treat PONV will decrease rates of PONV in the bariatric surgical population.

Trial Of Azithromycin In Campylobacter Concisus Patients With Diarrhea

DiarrheaFever2 more

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of azithromycin in Campylobacter concisus culture positive patients with diarrhea. The clinical characteristics of emerging Campylobacter concisus in adults is vomiting and persistent diarrhea. Whether patients may benefit from antibiotic treatment is unknown. The purpose of this trial is to investigate whether antibiotic treatment with azithromycin of Campylobacter concisus induced diarrhea can better the symptoms and shorten the duration of illness.

Randomized, Controlled, Single-blind Exploratory Study of the Efficacy and Safety of Wrist and Ankle...

Laparoscopic Sleeve GastrectomyPostoperative Nausea and Vomiting

PONV is the most common clinical presentation after surgical procedures beyond pain. A retrospective study of our center found that the postoperative incidence of LSG was 77.4%. PONV can not only cause postoperative discomfort, but also cause serious complications such as disturbance water and electrolyte balance, wound splitting, incisional hernia, and even residual gastric leakage and aspiration pneumonia, resulting in prolonged hospital stay and increased medical costs. Wrist and ankle acupuncture is a special kind of acupuncture therapy. Through subcutaneous stimulation, the electrical signal is fed back along the nerve fiber into the cerebral cortex, without dialectical treatment, and only needs the appropriate symptoms and signs of the patient. Although only in the wrist and ankle, it can solve a series of problems in the whole body, especially nausea, vomiting and pain symptoms.
