HORIZONS: Understanding the Impact of Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment on Everyday Life
Breast Cancer FemaleBreast Neoplasm18 moreThe purpose of this study is to invite all people diagnosed with cancer who meet the eligibility criteria to complete questionnaires before their treatment begins and at regular intervals over time to assess the impact of cancer and its treatment on people's lives in the short, medium and long term. We will explore a range of factors to determine their role in both recovery of health and well-being and self-management. Although it is known that people who have had cancer are likely to experience a number of physical and psychological problems as a result of the disease and treatment, it is not known what the 'typical' course of recovery of health and well-being looks like, how long it takes and how this can be influenced. We will determine pathways to recovery of health and well-being following cancer diagnosis (initially breast cancer diagnosed <50 years, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and gynaecological cancers) and identify what factors influence this. This includes assessing the relative importance of the person's illness, personal attributes, perceived burden of treatment, role of the environment they live in, including health / social care and personal networks of support, and their ability and capacity to self-manage. We will identify who is most at risk of problems and what environmental supports and resources people are able to mobilise to support their self-management. We will also explore who has the confidence and ability to manage during and beyond treatment and what factors influence this and whether this leads to earlier problem resolution and restoration of health and well-being. This knowledge will be used to develop and test future supportive interventions to enhance the rapid recovery of health and well-being - our long term aim being to design ways of helping people with cancer in areas we identify as problematic for them.
Observation in Patients With Early-Stage Vulvar Cancer Undergoing Sentinel Lymph Node Dissection...
Stage I Vulvar CancerStage II Vulvar Cancer2 moreThis research trial studies patients with early-stage vulvar cancer undergoing sentinel lymph node dissection. Sentinel lymph node dissection may have fewer side effects than removing all lymph nodes. Observing patients undergoing sentinel lymph node dissection may help doctors confirm the safety of the procedure.
OCT-AF Imaging of Pre-cancers of Vulva and Cervix
Cervical DysplasiaVulvar Dysplasia3 moreThe multimodal imaging technology, OCT-AFI, will be used to image sites on the cervix, the endocervical canal and vulva. The imaging probe is small enough, it can be inserted into the endocervical canal for imaging. The probe can also be placed in a conformable holder that can be shaped to conform the the folds of the vulva for vulvar imaging. The resultant images will be compared to histology images. The objectives are to determine feasibility of the technology in imaging vulva and its capability in detecting vulvar intraepithelial neoplasias feasibility in imaging cervix from endocervical canal to transformation zone to ectocervix if combined OCT with AFI increases the sensitivity of detecting high grade lesions in the cervix compared to just AFI alone (previous work was AFI alone).
A New Patient Reported Outcome Instrument to Assess Symptom Experience in Women With Vulvar Neoplasms...
Women With Vulvar Intraephitelial Neoplasia or Vulvar CancerPost-surgery complications in women with vulvar neoplasms (vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia and vulvar cancer) are still high and an instrument assessing patients self-reported post-vulval surgery symptom experiences is missing. The study aims to develop and validate a postoperative instrument to assess symptom experiences in women with vulvar neoplasms. In this mixed-method project 20 patients were interviewed, a WOMAN-PRO instrument was developed and content validity was tested by 6 experts and 10 patients. The instrument's psychometric properties and the prevalence of symptoms will be examined in a cross-sectional study in the University Hospitals Munich, Freiburg, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Zurich, Basel, Berne, and the Cantonal Hospital St. Gallen (N=150). The goal of this project is that symptom assessment becomes a standard component of clinical practice (to promote the early detection and treatment of symptoms) and research.
