A Trial of the Ideal Protein System Versus Low Fat Diet for Weight Loss

This study will examine whether, compared to a standard, low-fat, calorie-restricted diet intervention, the clinic-supported Ideal Protein weight loss method will result in greater weight loss and improvement in cardiometabolic risk factors over 3 months among obese adults with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors.

Obesity is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. The treatment of obesity and its related health issues, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes, exceeds $150 billion annually. "Morbidly" or "severely" obese patients - defined by a body mass index [BMI] of >35 kg/m2 or greater - are especially high risk for serious complications due to their weight. Within the Veterans Health Administration (VA) system, nearly 600,000 patients are severely obese. These Veterans create significant costs for the VA system, experience poorer quality of life, and have shortened lifespans. Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for severe obesity for weight loss, resolving weight-related health issues, and quality of life. Bariatric surgery is supported as a treatment option by many national societies, including those representing primary care and endocrinology. However, less than 1% of Veterans who qualify for bariatric surgery undergo it. Reasons for low utilization are unclear, although the investigators' preliminary research suggests that there are various patient, provider and system level barriers to severe obesity care. The goal of this study is to pilot-test an educational video that aligns patient preferences with treatment options to improve the care that severely obese Veterans receive.

Although coronary heart disease (CHD) treatment guidelines recognize obesity as a major modifiable risk factor,2 nearly half of all CHD patients are obese and the current standard of care fails to implement evidence-based obesity treatment for this high-risk population. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that weight loss improves outcomes in CHD patients. The primary goal of this study is to determine the feasibility of adding a 6-month behavioral weight loss intervention to exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation.

Telephone Counseling and Numberless Scales to Overcome Barriers to Adolescent Weight Loss

This study tests the feasibility and acceptability of a numberless behavioral digital scale (BDS) intervention combined with motivational interviewing (MI) to affect lifestyle changes to promote weight loss in adolescents who are obese. Half of the participants will receive this intervention, while the other half will use a digital scale along with the standard adolescent weight loss program.

Baropodometric Parameters Variation With Body Weight Loss

Background: One of the major public health problems of the 21st century is obesity. Baropodometry is commonly used to determine specific loads on the plantar surface of the foot and the comportment of the body center of pressure (CoP). To evaluate the redistribution of the baropodometric parameters: static and dynamic plantar pressures and antero - posterior CoP, by decreasing body weight. Methods: A sample of 43 overweight subjects (24 male, 19 female) would be recruited for the study. A hypocaloric diet would be designed with the aim to reduce participants body weight. The baropodometric exam would performed in two occasions: weight 1 - Session 1 and weight 2 - Session 2, when participants lost between 12 and 18 kg. The foot would be divided in 9 areas: heel, midfoot, 5 metatarsal heads (MTHs), Hallux, 2-5 toes. The Footwork® pressure platform would be used to carry out the evaluation.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether following a high carbohydrate/low fat diet or high protein/low fat diet for 30-days several times during six months of participating in the Curves fitness and diet program with or without dietary calcium supplementation promotes stepwise reductions in body weight, improvements in body composition, and/or improvements in markers of fitness and health.

This study examine the feasibility and efficacy of Avanzando Juntas, a four-month community-based lifestyle intervention rooted in the evidence-based Moving Forward lifestyle intervention developed with and for AA breast cancer survivors. This intervention was adapted in collaboration with Hispanic/Latina BC & GC survivors. It will offer twice-weekly sessions aimed at supporting adherence to ACS nutrition and physical activity guidelines to promote weight loss and improved quality of life.

The Effects of Capsinoids on Brown Adipose Tissue Activation in Obesity

This research study is being done to determine whether taking a dietary supplement called capsinoids, derived from sweet peppers, can activate brown fat that is already present or even generate new brown fat in individuals with excess weight. Previous studies have suggested that chronic consumption of capsinoids may be able to generate new brown fat in thin individuals. Capsinoids may also have a small positive effect on metabolism (increased calorie-burning) and fat loss. The knowledge gained in this study may eventually lead to more treatment options for people with excess weight.
