Effect of Lap-Band Induced Weight Loss on Serum PSA Levels

ObesityProstate Cancer

The proposed prospective study aims to determine whether interpretation of PSA levels in morbidly obese men require correction due to the obesity itself. If PSA levels are found to rise after weight loss, interpretation of PSA levels in morbidly obese men may be improved by upward correction of the PSA level. A 'correction factor' may be proposed for the interpretation of PSA levels in obese men, toward the clinical decision regarding indication for prostate biopsy.

Dopaminergic Function and Food Reward

AdiposityWeight Loss

The broad aim of the study is to obtain a better understanding of alterations in mesolimbic reward pathways in adiposity based on the hypothesis of a hypofunctioning reward system in obesity. This will be achieved by integrating a functional neuroimaging (fMRI) with behavioral reward tasks and the modulation of the dopamine level by dopamine depletion.

Association of Genes to Resistance to Weight Loss in Obese Patients

ObesityMetabolic Syndrome1 more

The overall goal of this study is to determine whether variations in the perilipin, and several other, genes would be a useful tool for physicians who are caring for morbidly obese patients to guide therapy. The main hypotheses to be tested is that sequence variations (polymorphisms) in the perilipin gene and several other obesity-related genes are associated with resistance to weight loss for obese individuals on energy restricted diets, potentially playing a role in the development of obesity related complications.

Body Composition & REE Responses to Bariatric Surgery

Weight LossWeight Change

The aim of this study is to measure important components of weight change in patients who underwent bariatric surgery on measures of fat mass and its distribution and fat-free mass (FFM) (bone mineral density, skeletal muscle, and specific organs) at 60 months (T60) and 84 months (T84) post-surgery, and to compare compartment sizes with stable weight controls.

Prepare - How to Reach Women of Reproductive Age With Obesity to Support Weight Loss Before Pregnancy?...

ObesityPregnancy Complications

Researchers at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital are conducting a study to learn more about how best to reach out to women (age 18-45) who are thinking about a pregnancy in the next couple of years and currently have a BMI greater than 30 kg/m2. Interested participants will be asked to complete a 15-minute survey. The survey will ask some more questions about their prior reproductive health history, opinions and experiences regarding lifestyle, weight and health. After completing the survey, researchers would like to arrange a time to complete a 20- to 30-minute semi-structured interview about their perceived health in the process of planning pregnancy.

Weight Loss Via Bariatric Surgery and Lifestyle Modification

ObesityWeight Loss

Gastric myoelectric, inflammatory, and hormonal responses, body compositional, energy expenditure, and metabolic changes during the development of obesity and the weight loss process are underinvestigated. This project studied the myoelectrical inflammatory and hormonal responses of the stomach, in addition to energy expenditure and body composition changes during weight loss via bariatric surgery and lifestyle intervention.
