Incisionless Treatment for Patients With Inadequate Weight Loss Following Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass...

Obesity

It is estimated that up to 20% of patients who have Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) surgery will not meet their weight loss goal, or may even regain some of the weight they initially lost. One possible explanation is that the opening between the stomach pouch and the intestine becomes stretched. If this opening becomes too wide, food may be able to pass from the stomach to the intestine too quickly - causing patients to feel less full after eating. For some patients, doctors may recommend additional invasive surgery to tighten the opening between the stomach pouch and the small intestine. Although this may help patients resume their weight loss, the risk of complications during a second surgical procedure is significantly higher than the risk during the original gastric bypass. The purpose of this study is to evaluate an incisionless procedure for patients who have either had inadequate weight loss or have regained weight following gastric bypass. The procedure is designed to tighten the opening between the stomach pouch and the small intestine, which may slow down the passage of food to help patients feel full longer after eating.

Mechanisms of Weight Loss in Patients Diagnosed With Achalasia

Achalasia

Currently there are no existing data to determine why some achalasia patients lose weight while others do not. The purpose of this study is to gather data from patients diagnosed with achalasia to determine if differences may be identified between those who lose weight and those who do not that would help us better understand the mechanism of weight loss in this population.

Impact of Weight Loss on Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease in Overweight and Obese Subjects: a Prospective...

GERDObesity

By affecting the gastroesophageal pressure gradient, obesity predisposes to reflux of gastric contents. The investigators hypothesized that the loss of weight will decrease this gradient and as a result decrease the severity and frequency of GERD symptoms. GERD negatively affects health related quality of life. Since loss of weight may decrease gastroesophageal reflux, the investigators hypothesized that it obesity contributes to poor quality of life in GERD subjects and losing weight should also favorably impact and improve quality of life in GERD patients.

Gastric Emptying Using Two Imaging Methods for Those Who Have Undergone POSE2 Weight Loss Procedure...

Weight Loss

The purpose of this study is to compare a less invasive breath test against the current standard for assessing gastric (stomach) emptying. The current standard of care is a procedure called Nuclear Scintigraphy of a Solid Meal (NSSM). This study will compare this method to a Gastric Emptying Breath Test (GEBT).
