Promoting Successful Weight Loss in Primary Care in Louisiana

The primary aim of this trial is to develop and test the effectiveness of a 24 month, patient-centered, pragmatic and scalable obesity treatment program delivered within primary care, inclusive of an underserved population. Half of the clinics received a behavioral intervention delivered in a primary care setting and half of the clinics received usual care.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of canagliflozin, a medication approved by the FDA for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, on body weight and metabolism in people with type 2 diabetes who are overweight or obese. Canagliflozin lowers glucose levels in the blood by making the kidneys excrete, rather than absorb, glucose. Canagliflozin is also often associated with weight loss. The study population will generally be type 2 diabetics, ages 18-75 years old, who are overweight or obese.

Exercise: Improving Compliance and Long-term Weight Loss

The overall aim of the proposed study is to determine the effectiveness of a 3-month yoga program on increasing compliance and improving weight loss while participating in the Sanford Profile program. Participants are randomized to one of three groups: in-class yoga, yoga by digital video disk (DVD), stretching by DVD. Changes in weight loss and stress levels are monitored.

Gender- and Culturally-Sensitive Weight Loss Intervention for Hispanic Males

The investigators propose to 1) assess the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary efficacy of a gender- and culturally-sensitive weight loss intervention in 48 overweight/obese Hispanic males ages 18-64 over 12 weeks; 2) assess participant characteristics and process measures related to the uptake of mobile-health (mHealth) technology in overweight/obese Hispanic males over 12 weeks; and 3) assess pathologic changes in the liver in Hispanic men enrolled in a 12-week weight loss intervention using a non-invasive MRI as a therapeutic response biomarker.

Low Intensity Weight Loss for Young Adults

This is a 3-arm randomized controlled trial to test the efficacy of three novel motivational approaches to weight loss with 18-25 year olds. Participants will be 18-25 year olds with a BMI of 25-45 kg/m2, randomized to: 1) Behavioral Weight Loss (BWL), 2) BWL + Autonomous Motivation (BWL+Aut) or 3) BWL + Extrinsic Motivation (BWL+Ext). All arms will receive a 6-month behavioral weight loss intervention, followed by a 6-month no-treatment follow up period.

The study evaluates the effects of two commercially available weight loss programs, the TSFL and the MEDD programs, each compared to a self-directed control diet, on changes in body weight over a 16-week weight loss phase, in apparently healthy overweight and obese men and women.
