Characterization of the Iatrogenic Drug Risk in Elderly Patients With Chronic Pain Who Consult the...

Iatrogenic Drug RiskChronic Pain

Chronic pain may be an additional risk factor for drug iatrogeny due to its management and also drug non-compliance in the geriatric population. it seems interesting to carry out an inventory of the iatrogenic risk before and after the consultation at the pain centre to enable us to identify the patients most at risk. This study would make it possible to characterize elderly patients with chronic pain, in order to consider, in a future study, setting up a pharmaceutical consultation.

Somatosensory Profiles in Individuals With Persistent Musculoskeletal Pain and Inflammatory Bowel...

Inflammatory Bowel DiseasesChronic Pain1 more

This study evaluates nervous system hypersensitivity in individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and experiences of ongoing musculoskeletal (MSK) pain. Previous results and current literature suggest that MSK pain in IBD may be influenced by hypersensitivity of the central nervous system, termed central sensitization. However, specific mechanisms contributing to pain experiences are unknown. Therefore, primary aims are to explore aspects of central sensitization through sensory testing in this population, and to investigate association of psychological and IBD features to sensory profiles. This study hypothesizes that IBD patients with MSK pain will demonstrate altered sensory function, and IBD/psychosocial features will be associated with altered sensory functioning and worse pain experiences.

Bowel ENDOmetriosis; Evaluation of Diagnostics and Quality of Life

Endometriosis Related PainQuality of Life6 more

Endometriosis on the bowel is a benign condition that can cause major complaints and severely affect the quality of life of women of fertile age. If medical treatment is not enough to improve pain and/or other symptoms it may be necessary to undergo major surgical treatment and removal of the endometriosis nodule on the bowel. Such extensive surgical treatment carries risks of serious complications. Therefore, a thorough diagnostic work-up before surgery is important to know the extent of disease. This will provide women with the best possible information and for the surgeon to plan the operation. The risk of complications increases as the bowel endometriosis is localized closer to the anus as well and/or if the bowel nodule is large. The distance between the anus and the nodule and the size of the nodule can be measured with two dimensional (2D) vaginal ultrasound. Additionally, Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is also used in some countries for these same measurements. Our study would like to investigate the diagnostic value of 2D ultrasound and MRI as well as learn more about women's quality of life before and after surgery. The investigators have designed the study to evaluate the following three questions into three studies ENDO1, ENDO2 and ENDO3: ENDO1: How good is 2D transvaginal ultrasound at measuring the size of the bowel endometriosis nodule and the distance between anus and the lower part of the bowel nodule compared to measurements done during surgery? ENDO2: What is the quality of life, sexual and bowel function of women before and 3- and 12-months after surgery due to bowel endometriosis? Questionnaires will be used. ENDO3: How good is 2D transvaginal ultrasound at measuring the size of the bowel endometriosis nodule compared to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and measurements done during surgery?

Pain Trajectories in Severe Persistent Inguinal Post-herniorrhaphy Pain

Chronic Pain

Severe persistent postsurgical pain (PPP) remains a major healthcare challenge. In the third most common surgical procedure in the UK, inguinal herniorrhaphy, including 85,000 surgeries in 2015, an estimated 1,500 to 3,000 patients will annually develop severe PPP. While the trajectory of PPP is generally considered a continuation of the acute post-surgery pain, recent data suggest the condition may develop with a delayed onset. The present study evaluated pain-trajectories in a consecutive cohort referred to a tertiary PPP-center. Explanatory variables based on individual psychometric, sensory and surgical profiles were analysed.

Study of the Effects of Photobiomodulation in Patients With Osteoarthritis

Osteo Arthritis KneePain2 more

PhotoBioModulation (PBM) is a mature science with therapeutic efficacy in humans and animals, and with excellent results in different medical specialties without side effects. However there are gaps that prevent adoption on a large scale. Recent research developed by our group and partners allowed us to understand the mechanisms of action of PBM, from Molecular Physics through Biochemistry and with consequent clinical validation, with precise, replicable and personalized therapeutic results. These findings have led to treatments for many kinds of pains with industrial predictability and accuracy, phenotypic adequacy technologies that are encapsulated, prescribed, and applied. Photobiomodulation applications cover treatments for pain, inflammation, tissue regeneration, healing, immune system activation, all of which are essential characteristics for osteoarthritis therapy. Our idea is to formulate great challenges of Photobiomodulation as a solution to osteoarthritis as follows: 1) Make PBM-based therapies as predictable as drug-based therapies; this is possible with precise dose calculation performed by our team; 2) Map the biochemical and molecular effects of PBM, including those related to gene expression; 3) Unify PBM theory by synthesizing and giving meaning to the millions of PBM data associated with osteoarthritis and correlating with clinical study to be performed under this thematic project. Overcoming these challenges, PBM will become a complementary (or supplementary) alternative to medications, physiotherapy and surgical procedures for the treatment of osteoarthritis.

Digital Signals in Chronic Pain (DiSCover Project)

Chronic Pain

The DiSCover Project is a 1-year longitudinal case-control observational study. In this study, the investigators plan to collect different types of data including self-reported health outcomes and quality of life data, behavioral data from activity trackers and health and fitness apps, data from lab tests, genetic data, and environmental data. One of the goals of this study is to develop digital biomarkers for chronic pain severity, flare ups and quality of life.

Chronic Postoperative Pain After the Lichtenstein Groin Hernioplasty

HerniaInguinal6 more

The study attempts to quantify the relative risks for chronic postoperative inguinal pain (CPIP) after Lichtenstein repair of groin hernia, depending on mesh type and fixation suture material. For this purpose the investigators will analyze data from the Swedish Hernia Registry (SHR).

Individual Patient Expanded Access IND of HB-adMSCs for Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain.

Chronic Pain

This is an Individual Patient Expanded Access IND providing multiple administrations of HBadMSCs for the treatment of Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain. The study duration is approximately 32 weeks, during that time the study subject will complete 1 screening visit, 6 infusion visits, one follow-up visit without infusion and one end of study visit. Next day telephone follow-up visits will occur following each infusion. Efficacy and safety labs as well as quality of life and VAS scores will be obtained.

Evaluation of Headache and Childbirth in a Chronic Pain Population

Headache

Headache and backache are common symptoms following childbirth. The incidence of these symptoms have been shown to increase during the postpartum period between 5 to 12 months following delivery. By 12 months postpartum up to 45% and 65% of women experience headache and backache, respectively. While studies have reported headache and backache as frequently persistent symptoms beyond the first year postpartum, few studies have specifically interrogated women seeking specialist pain physician input or identified predisposing risk factors. Finally there is little known about typically described pain characteristics of women who suffer with chronic postpartum headache and backache. We aim to compare the prevalence of chronic headache in women that have versus have not experienced childbirth.
