NarcolepsyIdiopathic Hypersomnia1 moreThe aim of this study is to describe and compare the anaesthesia history and possible problems encountered in 3 groups of patients with 3 chronic sleep diseases: narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia, and restless legs syndrome followed at the Montpellier Sleep Unit. For each participant, existing data from the medical record will be used, with their consent. All participants will complete a standardized questionnaire, concerning their history of anaesthesia, the course and possible complications, and questions about their treatment for their sleep disorder.

Restless Legs SyndromePeriodic leg movements during sleep is associated with microarousals and a stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system. The knowledge of this autonomic activation may help understanding the increase of cardiac risk observed in elderly. The aim of the study is to evaluate the relationship between periodic leg movements severity, age, gender, electromyographic power and heart rate response associated with periodic leg movements. Drug-free patients diagnosed with periodic leg movements were included. Clinical data and 24-h polysomnography recordings were analyzed.
Relationship Between Sensory and Motor Systems in Restless Leg Syndrome
Restless Legs SyndromeThis study will explore what occurs between sensory and motor systems in restless legs syndrome (RLS). Patients with RLS have uncomfortable sensations in the legs, usually in the evening or early part of the night. Most patients also have periodic involuntary leg movements. The condition tends to worsen over time, resulting in severe discomfort and sleep disturbances. Healthy normal volunteers and patients with RLS between 18 and 80 years of age may be eligible for this study. All candidates will be screened with a medical history, physical and neurological evaluations, electroymogram (measure of muscle activity), overnight sleep study, electrocardiogram (ECG, measurement of the electrical activity of the heart), and blood and urine tests. They may also have brain or spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computerized tomography (CT) scans and a chest X-ray. Participants must stop taking all medications prohibited by the study for 2 days or more before the study starts and throughout its duration. Participants will undergo prepulse inhibition tests to assess nervous system function. The participant sits comfortably in a quiet room. Several cables are attached to the face and legs using a special cream that conducts electrical signals through the cables to recording equipment. Nervous system activity is evaluated while the subject is at rest and after sensory stimulation (stimulating the nerves in the legs and face with a very brief electrical current of mild to moderate intensity). At times, the subject receives a short, mild sound stimulation delivered through earphones. The testing session takes 4 to 6 hours.

Although the exact mechanism is not clearly understood, sleep disturbances and dopamine deficiency may regarded as a potential contributing factor for autonomic dysfunction. The objective of the study is to evaluate autonomic functions and determine possible associations between autonomic dysfunction with clinical factors in patients with RLS.

Restless Legs SyndromeThe proposed study is a Cross-sectional epidemiological study, performed in 330 primary care practices in Germany. The study will be conducted on a fixed day in November 2007. Primary care surgeries throughout Germany will be asked to take part. The study material will be delivered to the surgery by a member of sales-force who will also explain the study conduct to the physician/staff. Physicians who want to take part in the study will send a signed contract to BI. Physicians will be trained to diagnose RLS. All patients attending the participating surgeries on a fixed day will be invited to participate in the study. The patients will be handed a questionnaire to fill out while waiting for their appointment. No patient-related data apart from gender and year of birth will be recorded on the questionnaire and it will be ensured that no re-identification of patients is possible. Therefore, no written informed consent will be obtained from the participants. The patient questionnaire will consist of the following items: A screening questionnaire for RLS (according to Stiasny-Kolster et. al., data on file) Additional questions concerning the impact of the patients leg problems on daily life. The practice staff will then collect the questionnaire. All patients who have answered question 1 (asking for unpleasant sensations of the legs) with ¿Yes¿ will subsequently be assessed for the diagnosis by the physician. The physician fills out a second questionnaire, covering the following items: Diagnosis (cause of leg problems) Concomitant diagnoses and therapies If the diagnosis of RLS was made: consequences (therapy)? Was the diagnosis of RLS pre-known? All completed questionnaires will be sent to data management by the surgery within 2 working days.
Hypnosis and Direct Autonomic Experience Influence on Chronic Symptoms

Investigating a new and novel form of hypnosis application called "Direct Autonomic Experience (DAX)" which is using combination of visualization, metaphor, post-hypnotic suggestion and anchoring. Purpose is to confirm that DAX generally appears to impact SUDS value and subjects report observed level of effect on short and longer term measurements. Most significantly, testing that DAX technique/action is reusable later if the measured SUDS value returns or increases.
