Combining RT With Toripalimab and Chemotherapy in Metastatic Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Metastatic Nasopharyngeal Cancer

Incidences of de novo metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma range from 6% to 8% at the time of presentation. For the initial diagnosis of metastatic NPC, PD-1 plus chemotherapy yields a satisfactory outcome with1year PFS of 40%. Previous study demonstrated the benefit of adding radiotherapy to chemotherapy in metastatic NPC, however there is no evidence whether radiotherapy can further improve PFS based on chemotherapy plus PD-1 . The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of first-line immunochemotherapy combined with radiotherapy for initial diagnosed metastatic NPC.

COVID-19

The coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is a new strain of coronavirus found in human in 2019, which causes epidemic worldwide. A study found that the increase in hyaluronic acid levels is closely related to the clinical symptoms of COVID-19, including pulmonary ground glass lesions, lymphocytopenia, immune response and cytokine storms, systemic vascular diseases, thrombotic coagulation disorders, which suggests that hyaluronic acid could be an important target for COVID-19 treatment and could improve the clinical symptoms of COVID-19 patients. The results from a recent clinical trial recruited 144 patients with COVID-19 show that the inhibitor of hyaluronic acid synthesis, hymecromone, can significantly improve clinical symptoms, such as lung lesions and lymphocytopenia in COVID-19 patients. Therefore, hymecromone has the potential to become one of the options of COVID-19 treatment. This study is a single-center, randomized, parallel controlled, double-blind clinical trial designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Hymecromone tablets in subjects aged 18-90 years (with boundary values) with a confirmed mild or moderate form of COVID-19 infection. The aim of this study is to optimize the program of the combination of hymecromone in the treatment of COVID-19 to improve the therapeutic effect.

The researchers are doing this study to find out whether combining venetoclax with several different standard chemotherapy drugs used to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in children is safe and effective in adults with newly diagnosed ALL. Geniculate Artery Embolization for the Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a highly prevalent degenerative joint disease that contributes to chronic pain and disability in approximately 10% of people over the age of 55. With 25% of Canadians expected to be aged 55 or older by 2036, an increasing number of Canadians will be impacted by knee OA. In affected individuals the risk of medical co-morbidities is increased which can lead to adverse cardiovascular outcomes, depression, and poorer quality of life. Current conservative therapy includes oral analgesia, lifestyle modification, corticosteroid injection, and viscosupplementation. These current conservative measures have variable responses. In patients who would prefer to avoid surgery or are not surgical candidates safe and consistently effective treatment options are lacking. Geniculate artery embolization (GAE) is a minimally invasive alternative with low risk of complications that has shown promise in exploratory studies. GAE provides benefit by disrupting angiogenesis in the knee which can contribute to chronic inflammation of the affected joint, and helps prevent the growth of new sensory nerve fibers which can reduce the pain associated with osteoarthritis.

The social distancing requirements for COVID-19 coupled with the adverse health impacts of social isolation and decreased access to healthcare in rural areas places older adults with disabilities in a dire situation. The smart sensor system to be deployed and studied in this project aims to reduce disability for rural community-dwelling older adults and improve health-related quality of life, including depression and anxiety. An implementation guide will be developed to increase success of future scale-up evaluations.

Gastric CancerPeritoneal Metastases

Gastric cancer with peritoneal carcinomatosis has a poor prognosis, with little treatment options available. The current treatment strategy consists of palliative systemic chemotherapy. However, previous research suggests that systemic chemotherapy is less effective against peritoneal carcinomatosis than against metastases that spread hematogenously. Several studies suggested that in patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis, intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IP) may be superior compared to intravenous chemotherapy. Intraperitoneal chemotherapy could lead to higher concentrations of chemotherapy in the peritoneal cavity for a longer period of time, resulting in an increased cumulative exposure to the peritoneal metastases. A few Asian studies have shown promising results with intraperitoneal chemotherapy in patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis of gastric origin. However, intraperitoneal chemotherapy combined with systemic chemotherapy has not been investigated in Western patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis of gastric origin yet. The objective of this trial is to establish the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of intraperitoneal administration of irinotecan, added to systemic capecitabine/oxaliplatin (CAPOX) in patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis of gastric origin.
