Influence of the Psychophysiological Status of Elite Judo Athletes on Their Performance and Injury...

Injury

Judo is one of the possible items in our country to win the first prize in Olympics. However, scientific research in this field is not enough to support the coaches to train the athletes. Series of research should be planned and executed to help the coaches and to promote the performance of our athletes. This is the first step of the serial research. The purposes of this study are: in the first year, to find the correlations between the physiological/psychological competitive abilities of the second/third year athletes and their performance/injury status. And, the physiological/ psychological competitive abilities of the first year athletes will be collected in the beginning of this year. And then, their performance/injury status will be followed through the whole year and to the end of the second year monthly. The purposes of this study in the second year are to find the causation of the physiological/ psychological competitive abilities in the first year with the performance/injury status in the second year. The subjects of this study are from 4 senior high schools in the north part of Taiwan which performed well in national judo competition in senior high schools in the past years. The study designs are both cross-sectional and prospective. In the part of the second/third year athletes, it is a cross-sectional design, and in the part of the first year athletes, it is a prospective design. The physiological status will be assessed with their general fitness and balance. The fitness test includes body composition, strength, power, endurance, agility, coordination, balance, flexibility, and cardiopulmonary capacity. The psychological competitive abilities will be assessed with a questionnaire. Injury and the possible causes will also be collected with a questionnaire monthly. Finally, the data will be analyzed with descriptive analysis, chi-square test, t-test and regression analysis to show their characteristics, correlations and causations.

Measurement of Cerebral Oxygen Extraction Fraction Using MRI Technique

Stroke

All images in this study were acquired on a 1.5 T Sonata whole body scanner (Siemens Medical Inc., Erlangen, Germany) using 2D multi-echo gradient echo/spin echo sequence and 2D single-shot gradient echo-planar imaging sequence plus intravenous magnetic susceptibility contrast medium. The quantitative estimates and mapping of cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen utilization were calculated and plotted in all subjects.

Falls in Stroke Patients After Hospital Discharge: Prevalence and Risk Factors

Stroke

The purposes of this study are: (1) to investigate the incidence and causes of falls of stroke patients residing in Taipei City and Taipei county after their discharge from the National Taiwan University Hospital, (2) to investigate the relationship between clinical manifestations of stroke patients before their hospital discharge and their incidence of falls after hospital discharge, and (3) to identify the risk factors for stroke patients who frequently fall after hospital discharge.

The Early High Risk Period for Patients With Heart Failure

Heart FailureCongestive

Many people with heart failure either die or are admitted to the hospital in the first few months after the condition is diagnosed. The reasons for this are currently unclear- but may be due to worsening heart failure or other medical conditions such as angina, heart attack or sudden electrical problems of the heart. The investigators propose to recruit and follow-up 450 people, with a new diagnosis of heart failure for a minimum of six months in a multi-centre observational study at two hospital sites: The Hillingdon (Uxbridge) and The Conquest (Hastings) hospitals. The total study duration will be two years. People will be recruited after a diagnosis of heart failure is made and the study will assess reasons for death or admission to hospital and the psychological impact of the condition on both patients and their carers. This is an observational study and no change will be made to patients' conventional treatment. Hypotheses: The high mortality and hospitalisation rate in the early period after diagnosis of heart failure is related to progressive pump failure; or The high mortality in the early period after the diagnosis of heart failure is related to co-morbid events- principally major coronary events such as myocardial infarction or acute coronary syndrome. This research should help to identify ways of improving the outlook for people with newly diagnosed heart failure. The analysis of the data generated by this study will be supervised by a statistician. Clinical and demographic data will be described using mean + standard deviation, for continuous variables, and absolute numbers and percentages for categorical variables. Group differences will be examined by t-tests for continuous variables and Chi-square (x2) test for categorical variables. Survival will be reported in terms of Kaplan-Meier curves with differences analysed by Cox proportional hazards.

Schizophrenia and Genetic Counseling

Schizophrenia

This research is designed to investigate the perceptions and opinions of individuals who either have schizophrenia or who have a family member with schizophrenia, in relation to genetic counseling. Data will be collected via a 15 minute online questionnaire. There is also an option for respondents to participate in a 45 minute interview if they wish. It is expected that the study will show that adequate information about genetic counseling is not provided to these individuals. It is also hoped that this research will help to make genetic counseling sessions more specific to people with schizophrenia in their family.
