Brain Derived Neurotropic Factor Response to Aerobic Exercise Intensity in Depressive Patients....

Acute aerobic exercise improves affective stats in patients with mental illnesses. Brain derived neurotropic factor (BDNF) may be a biological mechanism that contributes to the affective benefits. The magnitude of the increase of serum BDNF might be exercise intensity dependent, but no study has compared low high-aerobic-intensity training at 90-95 % of the maximal heart rate (HRmax) with long-slow-distance training at 70 % of the HRmax in patients with depression. The aim of this study is to compare changes in serum BDNF levels after high-aerobic-intensity training and long-slow-distance training in a intra-individual design in patients suffering from depression. The results will give indications of a possible difference in BDNF response between aerobic intensities and may be uses as pilot data for calculating sample size.

Efficacy and Biological Targets of Response to rTMS Therapy in Youth Depression

Depressive Symptoms

Youth depression is a debilitating disorder that exacts enormous social, economic and personal cost. Unfortunately, treatments which are conventionally used to treat adult depression have often modest to no efficacy in youth and have side effects. Thus, there is a tremendous imperative to develop new treatments for youth depression. Investigators propose to examine the efficacy of a short form of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for youth depression and examine its biological targets. This will be the first study examining the efficacy of a short rTMS protocol in youth diagnosed with depression who fail responding to or are intolerable to antidepressants. If the results are positive, investigators will have identified a novel treatment that may be both more efficacious, better tolerated and more acceptable treatment for youth depression. Finally, identifying the biological mechanisms leading to treatment efficacy will lead to more personalized treatments for youth depression and will be groundbreaking vis à vis understanding the mechanisms involved in this illness.

The goals of this study are to evaluate the efficacy of JNJ-18038683 in an 8 week trial to ameliorate the cognitive deficit and reduce residual depressive symptoms in 60 stable bipolar outpatients receiving treatment for depression. JNJ-18038683 will be studied and compared with placebo as adjunctive treatment to standard pharmacologic treatment for bipolar disorder.

The primary aim of this project is to conduct a randomized controlled pilot study evaluating the feasibility and potential effectiveness of a newly developed combined Health At Every Size and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (HAES/ACT) treatment, known as Accept Yourself! compared to a commercial behavioral weight loss program, Weight Watchers (WW). Obese women (BMI ≥ 30) with Major Depressive Disorder will be randomly assigned to one of these two treatments. Depression, physical health, and other psychosocial outcomes will be assessed prior to treatment, at post-treatment, and at 3, 6, 9, and 12-month follow up assessments.
