Mitochondrial Remodeling After Exercise

Overweight and ObesityInsulin Resistance3 more

Regulation of mitochondrial health in overweight and obese individuals may be impaired. The purpose of this study is to identify impairments in regulation of mitochondrial health within skeletal muscle and to determine if short-term exercise training (2-weeks) can reverse such impairments. The investigator's hypothesis is that pathways that serve to degrade poorly functioning mitochondria in overweight and obese individuals are down-regulated, but that short-term exercise training can restore these pathways to improve skeletal muscle mitochondrial function.

Overweight and Obesity as Prognostic Factors for Survival in Children With Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia...

LeukemiaLymphoblastic

Background: Mexico City has one of the highest incidences and mortality rates of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in the world and a high frequency of early relapses (17%) and early mortality (15%). Otherwise, childhood overweight and obesity are reaching epidemic proportions. They have been associated with poor outcomes in children with ALL. The aim of present study is to identify if overweight and obesity are prognostic factors associated with survival rates in Mexican children with ALL. Methods: Multicenter cohort study. ALL children younger than 15 years old are included and followed-up. Overweight and obesity are classified according World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) criteria. Deaths and relapses are the main outcomes.

A 6-month Observational Study on Combined Oral Contraceptives and Body Weight in Pre-Menopausal...

Contraceptive UsageOverweight or Obesity3 more

Approximately 15 million women of reproductive age women in the United States have overweight or obesity and use the combined estrogen and progestin oral contraceptive pill (COC). Although many women report weight gain as a side effect of COCs, a conclusive link between COC use and weight gain has not been established. This investigation will address a major gap in the literature by prospectively evaluating the influence of initiating a COC versus non-hormonal contraceptives (NHCs) on weight, body composition, eating behaviors, and appetite in pre-menopausal women with overweight or obesity. Aim 1 will assess the feasibility of recruiting and retaining a racially/ethnically diverse group of women with overweight and obesity while Aim 2 will explore changes in body weight, body composition, and cardiometabolic risks in these women; Aim 3 will explore changes in dietary and macronutrient energy intake, eating behaviors, and appetite in this subset of women. This research will help the investigators understand the extent to which COCs are associated with weight gain and help guide medical providers in counseling women with overweight and obesity on appropriate contraceptive methods.

Efficacy of a Structured Weight Loss Program in Overweight Women With a History of Recurrent Pregnancy...

ObeseOverweight2 more

Overweight and obesity has been associated with a number of adverse pregnancy outcomes in women of reproductive age, including infertility and early pregnancy loss. Recent data suggests that overweight and obese patients are also at increased risk of recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), a devastating condition that affects 1% of the fertile population. The investigators propose a prospective, randomized controlled trial in which overweight and obese patients with unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss are enrolled in a structured, 6 month, weight loss program or provided routine counseling regarding the importance of weight loss. Pregnancy outcomes will then be followed to assess miscarriage rates. Metabolic outcomes, such as lipid and glucose profiles, will also be evaluated.

Metabolism and Nutrition DisorderObesity

This trial will be conducted in the United States of America (USA). The aim of the trial is to investigate whether the drug is safe, well tolerated and to investigate the efficacy of NNC 0070-0002-0182 for the treatment of obesity. The subjects will be treated with drug and placebo. This registration covers the phase 2 part of a combined phase 1/phase 2 trial (phase 1 part of trial conducted between November 2007 and April 2008).

The TANTALUS® II System for the Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes: A Randomized Study

Type 2 Diabetes MellitusOverweight

The main purpose of this research study is to investigate whether the TANTALUS II System is effective in improving glycemic (blood sugar) control in subjects who have type 2 diabetes (high blood sugar) and are overweight. The research will also evaluate the impact on weight loss and will study other health conditions related to obesity. This research study involves an experimental system. The experimental system is the TANTALUS System, which consists of the implantable portion that includes the implantable pulse generator (IPG) and three pairs of implantable leads. There are also three external parts (items that are used outside your body): the programmer, the charger, and the Patient Wand.
