The investigators have developed an early detection solution for lung and breast cancer. A system which can distinguish between different medical odors based on biosensors. Our product is user-friendly noninvasive, nonradioactive and nontoxic to the patients. The technology enables a high level of sensitivity and provides users with a quick lab response and a simple yes or no answer. The aim of this study is to contribute and detect the patient at the earliest possible stage, in a noninvasive, nonradioactive and nontoxic way. Exhaled breath and urine samples are a promising approach towards future possible lung and breast cancer screening method.

Platform for Medical Information Extraction From Incomplete Data

In order to perform research smoothly, the process of information extraction is required for translating data in clinical text into available format for analysis and statistic. In medical research, the problem of missing data occurs frequently. It is important to develop the method with better imputation performance in the stability and accuracy. The purposes of this project are to provide the data integration and extraction methods for handling the structured and unstructured data sources in more efficient ways, to provide the validation scheme for facilitating the data reviewing of extracted results produced by information extraction modules, to increase the quality of clinical data by comparing the data from different data sources and correcting data errors and inconsistent, to handle the clinical data with the properties of time series and incompleteness, to increase accuracy of data analysis and increase quality of health care by improving the completeness and correctness of clinical data, to provide flexibility of methods in the platform. In the project, the disease topic is focused on the liver cancer patients' clinical data and we hope the methods in the projects can be extended to handle other diseases by replacing these knowledge models in the future.

Myeloproliferative Neoplasms: an In-depth Case-control Study

There is a paucity of data on the aetiology of myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). The investigators conducted a systematic review of the literature which identified several cohort and case-control studies that have investigated a wide range of potential medical, environmental and occupational risk factors. However, these studies have been limited by a wide variation in case definition and small sample sizes limiting the potential to detect modest risk differences between cases and controls. The research group propose an exploratory case-control study of 100 patients with classic MPNs and 200 controls to determine the optimal methods for roll out of this study to a multi-centred UK-based case-control study that will investigate the aetiology of MPN subtypes. The objectives of the study are to evaluate recruitment procedures, response rates, the development of a telephone administered questionnaire, compare occupational exposure assessment using OccIDEAS, a novel web based program, with a job-exposure matrix (FINJEM), evaluate the feasibility of collection of DNA from saliva compared to blood samples, identify potential aetiologic factors associated with MPNs and explore assessment of quality of life. The findings of this exploratory study will form the basis of a protocol for a large United Kingdom (UK)-wide case-control study of MPNs.
