Acute PainEffective management of postoperative pain is a priority for women undergoing cesarean delivery. Despite availability of modern analgesics, postoperative pain management remains a challenge. One opportunity to enhance the analgesic effect of the pharmacological treatments given to people suffering from pain (and not just pain) is through increasing the expectations for pain relief following treatment. Although much knowledge has been accumulated about the significant effect of expectations on pain, virtually all evidence are based on experimental studies carried out in laboratory settings, and there is a need to investigate how this knowledge could translated into improved clinical care. The aim of the current study is to examine whether the communication style between the nursing staff and the patient during analgesic administration will affect the results of pain relief treatment in the mother-newborn ward after cesarean section. As another goal, the study will examine whether relevant patient's characteristics will predict the effectiveness of the treatment.

Emotional and motivational aspects accompany pain, leading to its aversiveness and motivation for avoidance. In chronic pain, a negative hedonic shift has been proposed that is characterized by disproportionally increased emotional-motivational compared to sensory-discriminative pain responses. Such a negative hedonic shift is, for example, mirrored in very high comorbidity rates of chronic pain and affective disorders such as depression and anxiety. The aim of this study is to develop methods that allow the differentiation of sensory-discriminative and emotional-motivational pain response and to characterize mechanisms of the negative hedonic shift.

Post Operative PainAcutePostoperative pain after laparoscopy may be localized pain resulting from incision due to many (two or three) punctures (somatic pain) or due to manipulation of the intra-abdominal organs as ovaries, uterus, omentum, and intestine (visceral pain) or shoulder and back pain caused by retained CO2 in the peritoneal cavity with its irritation effect on the diaphragm.Patients will be divided into two groups: Intraperitoneal (IP) group (20 patients):They will receive 100 ml normal saline infused over 10 min immediately before the induction of anesthesia and then continuous infusion of 500 ml normal saline intraoperatively then intraperitoneal wash of 100 ml normal saline containing 30 mg/kg MgSO4 at the end of laparoscopy. Acute and Chronic Pain After One-stage Hybrid Arrhythmia Ablation Surgery
ArrythmiaChronic Pain2 moreAfter one-stage hybrid arrhythmia ablation surgery there are possible side effects like acute and chronic pain. There is a lot of research surrounding these pains but not specifically after one-stage hybrid arrhythmia ablation surgery. The investigators want to research factors that may be associated with the absence of chronic pain after hybrid ablation include ketamine, peroperative opioids, loco-regional blocks, neuraxial blocks, wound infiltration, postoperative patient-controlled analgesia. The presence of corticosteroids or NSAIDS, will also be evaluated. Furthermore, non-adaptable factors such as genetics complicate the onset of chronic post-operative pain. Taking existing knowledge in this field into account, incidence risk as well as acute pain duration and intensity and their effects on chronic pain will become the primary focus of this study. The investigators will contact all patients who had a one-stage hybrid arrhythmia ablation surgery at UZ Brussels. Participants will be sent a questionnaire with a consent form in and a survey asking about their pain 3 months postop and their current pain management therapy.
Remote Immersive Virtual Reality Teaching:
Educational ProblemsAcute PainPatients in rural Canada face serious anesthesia care deficiencies relative to their counterparts in urban centers. Despite 18% of Canadians living in rural settings only 3.1% of medical specialists practice in rural areas. To provide equity in healthcare there is a need to develop a network where specialists in urban centers can provide training, coaching, and support to physicians in rural communities. Despite some work being done this is not possible for all specialists due to cost and travel. One potential solution to this problem is telesimulation, whereby telecommunication and simulation tools are used to provide training remotely. Simple, 2D telesimulation setups using webcams and computers have been used to teach remotely but problems with video displays and learner engagement have occurred leading to a need for more sophisticated telesimulation tools. Recently, virtual reality (VR) systems have been developed allowing the learner and teacher to immerse in a 3D computer-generated environment where they feel as if they are in the same room. We propose to see whether teaching ultrasound guided regional anesthesia (UGRA), a skill required by rural physicians, using 3D VR is better than teaching by 2D tele simulation.
Boosting Open-Label Placebo Effects in Acute Induced Pain in Healthy Adults
Acute PainThis study is to investigate the effect of open-label placebo (OLP) application on acute pain in an experimental model of acute pain (simulating wound pain: this installation will apply monophasic, rectangular electrical pulses of 0.5ms duration with alternating polarity at 2 Hz frequency. The current will be increased to target a pain rating of 6 of 10 on the NRS (0 = no pain, 10 = worst imaginable pain). Three further adjustments in current will be made every 5 minutes for the next 15 minutes to compensate for habituation. This final current will be kept constant until the end of the particular experiment). In Part 1 duration of OLP analgesia will be examined, and onset and size of the effect will be reevaluated. In Part 2 of this study outcomes between subjects receiving one OLP injection, subjects receiving one repetition of the injection on a fixed time point and subjects receiving one repetition of the injection on-demand will be evaluated

The aim of this study is to compare the effects of finger puppet, abeslang puzzle, and pinwheel on pain and anxiety during blood sampling in preschool children presenting to the pediatric emergency department. This randomized controlled study used parallel trial design.
Bupivacaine Versus Bupivacaine Plus Lidocaine in Infraclavicular Block
PainAcute2 moreIn this study, the investigators will compare two different anesthetic solutions in the infraclavicular block in patients having forearm, wrist, and hand surgery. The solutions will be bupivacaine 0.5% versus bupivacaine 0.25% plus lidocaine 1%, both associated with epinephrine 5 mcg/ml and dexamethasone 4 mg. The main objective of this investigation is to demonstrate that using higher concentrations of bupivacaine alone results in a significant block duration increase compared with the mixture of bupivacaine and lidocaine.
