Pilot Study Testing a Web-Based Moral Elevation Intervention for Veterans With PTSD and Moral Injury...
Posttraumatic Stress DisorderMoral InjuryGiven the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and moral injury in combat Veterans and the limitations to current treatments, novel approaches are needed to target both PTSD and moral injury and directly impact psychosocial growth and functional recovery. One potential way to address this critical need is through moral elevation-a positive emotional state described as feeling uplifted and inspired by others' virtuous actions. This study will pilot a web-based moral elevation intervention with Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and New Dawn Veterans who experienced a morally injurious event and with a PTSD diagnosis. If Veterans are willing and able to complete an online moral elevation intervention and it has beneficial effects, then moral elevation could be feasibly utilized as a tool to reverse the negative effects of trauma and facilitate recovery. Data from this study will be used to develop larger clinical trials to test if this intervention significantly improves PTSD symptoms and moral injury distress and enhances social functioning.
Neural Control and Cardiac-Vascular Function in Women With PTSD (VA Psychological Assessment)
Post Traumatic Stress DisorderThe purpose of this research is 1) to investigate the role of the sympathetic nervous system and cardiac-vascular function in women with PTSD; and 2) to determine whether lifestyle modifications (exercise training and healthy eating) would be effective in reducing sympathetic activity, improving cardiovascular function, and improving psychiatric and quality of life outcomes in women with PTSD. It is hypothesized that (1) women with PTSD will have over-activation of the sympathetic nervous system and impaired cardiac-vascular function compared with women who are trauma free, and (2) lifestyle modifications can reduce sympathetic activity, improve cardiac-vascular function, and improve psychiatric symptoms and quality of life in women with PTSD.
Does an Occupational Therapy Program Enhance Mental Health Outcomes for Veterans Who Scuba Dive...
Post Traumatic Stress DisorderDepression3 moreThe purpose of the study is to investigate whether an occupational therapy program could enhance mental health outcomes for veterans who SCUBA dive. SCUBA diving requires modified breathing techniques and has been found to provide calming effects to individuals who engage in this activity. Occupational therapy interventions such as mindfulness, journaling, and deep breathing techniques can also provide similar calming effects. Therefore, this study will explore whether occupational therapy can provide additional benefits to overall mental health of veterans who SCUBA dive.

Massed Cognitive Processing Therapy for Combat-related PTSD
PTSDPost Traumatic Stress DisorderThe purpose of this study is to determine if cognitive processing therapy (CPT) delivered in a massed format (MCPT) is as effective as standard delivery of CPT. MCPT will be delivered in an intensive outpatient setting (12 sessions in 5 days) composed of both group and individual sessions. Standard delivery of CPT consists of 12 sessions over 6 weeks and involves only individual sessions. Assessment of PTSD and related symptoms will be conducted at pre-treatment and 1 month and 4 months following treatment in both conditions. Additionally, in order to compare the treatment groups at the same point in actual time, each group will be assessed at the one month posttreatment time point for the other condition.
Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET)
Posttraumatic Stress DisorderThe purpose of this study is to learn more about Narrative Exposure Therapy for Justice Involved Veterans. This pilot study will examine the feasibility of this intervention in a justice-involved veteran population, and will see whether the intervention needs to be tailored to best meet their needs. The investigators will examine whether the intervention impacts key clinical outcomes, including posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, as well as on measures of moral injury, anger, depression, suicidality, and aggression.
Service Dog Training Program for Military Veterans With PTSD
Post Traumatic Stress DisorderPost-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), an invisible wound of war, affects approximately 20%1 of the 18.5 million U.S. veterans and places them at higher risk for impaired biopsychosocial functioning. PTSD symptom severity (PTSDSS) is significantly correlated with stress and psychosocial consequences of inability to regulate emotions, control impulsive behaviors, and function within family and society. Alarming veteran PTSD rates and its insidious effects demand empirically validated treatment programs. More than a million veterans receive new diagnoses of each year. VA PTSD therapy programs reach only 1% of veterans. Nearly 35% of veterans do not respond to widely used psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy treatments. Training a service dog (SD) is a novel rehabilitative animal-assisted intervention that shows promise in other populations. This project evaluates the efficacy of a service dog training program (SDTP) as an alternative and adjunctive treatment and rehabilitative option for veterans with PTSD.
Motor Interference Therapy For Traumatic Memories
TraumaPsychological1 moreThe aim of the study is to compare the effect of motor interference therapy (TIM) to reduce the intensity of discomfort (distress) generated by a traumatic memory compared to a relaxation control maneuver, immediately after the intervention, a week, a month and six months after intervention.
