The Attachment, Regulation and Competency (ARC) Framework
Posttraumatic Stress DisorderDevelopmental Trauma DisorderThis study evaluates the effectiveness of the Attachment Regulation and Competency (ARC) treatment framework in comparison to treatment as usual for reducing symptoms of PTSD and Developmental Trauma Disorder among children ages 8 to 16 with a history of exposure to multiple traumatic events.
Women's Responses to a Mindfulness-Based Body Scan: A Pilot Study
Post Traumatic Stress DisorderTrauma1 morePTSD develops after trauma and is marked by intrusive memories, avoidance of reminders, negative changes in mood and cognitive processes, and dysregulated physical and emotional stress reactivity. PTSD disparately affects twice as many women as men (8.0% vs. 4.1%), and finding effective treatments for these women is critical to reduce poor health outcomes associated with PTSD. Mind-body therapies (MBT), using the mind in combination with the body to facilitate healing hold promise to enhance PTSD treatment by improving stress regulation. While MBT reduce PTSD symptoms long-term, women with PTSD may initially experience distress, leading to treatment avoidance. This pilot study will explore women's initial responses to MBT, the prevalence of adverse responses, and which women are at risk for adverse responses in a sample of participants with a history of trauma and varying levels of PTSD symptoms. Study participants will attend one virtual study visit via one-on-one videoconference with the PI, where they will complete self-report measures of stress and affect before and after one session of a MBT exercise. A subset of the sample will complete a semi-structured individual videoconference interview with the PI within two weeks following completion of the MBT exercise and quantitative measures.
Short-term Intervention and Health Trajectories After Mass Trauma
Post Traumatic Stress DisorderThis study has two aims. The first is to understand more of what may be typical health trajectories after mass trauma for children and adults and what predicts these trajectories. The second is to understand what may be effective early interventions to prevent long-term health and psychosocial problems for youth (6-19). Participants are recruited from an outreach program implemented after a landslide killed 11 persons and destroyed 33 houses in Gjerdrum in Norway. One third of the inhabitants were evacuated. All evacuated are contacted and screened for trauma related difficulties. Those who have significant post-trauma reactions are offered trauma focused interventions.
Effectiveness of Group Focused Psychosocial Support for Adults Affected by Humanitarian Crises
DepressionPosttraumatic Stress Disorder1 moreThis is an effectiveness study of group problem management plus, a low-intensity psychological intervention, delivered in five sessions to adults affected by humanitarian crises. The current study will evaluate the effectiveness of Group Problem Management Plus (PM+).
Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET)
Posttraumatic Stress DisorderThe purpose of this study is to learn more about Narrative Exposure Therapy for Justice Involved Veterans. This pilot study will examine the feasibility of this intervention in a justice-involved veteran population, and will see whether the intervention needs to be tailored to best meet their needs. The investigators will examine whether the intervention impacts key clinical outcomes, including posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, as well as on measures of moral injury, anger, depression, suicidality, and aggression.
Service Dog Training Program for Military Veterans With PTSD
Post Traumatic Stress DisorderPost-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), an invisible wound of war, affects approximately 20%1 of the 18.5 million U.S. veterans and places them at higher risk for impaired biopsychosocial functioning. PTSD symptom severity (PTSDSS) is significantly correlated with stress and psychosocial consequences of inability to regulate emotions, control impulsive behaviors, and function within family and society. Alarming veteran PTSD rates and its insidious effects demand empirically validated treatment programs. More than a million veterans receive new diagnoses of each year. VA PTSD therapy programs reach only 1% of veterans. Nearly 35% of veterans do not respond to widely used psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy treatments. Training a service dog (SD) is a novel rehabilitative animal-assisted intervention that shows promise in other populations. This project evaluates the efficacy of a service dog training program (SDTP) as an alternative and adjunctive treatment and rehabilitative option for veterans with PTSD.
Massed Cognitive Processing Therapy for Combat-related PTSD
PTSDPost Traumatic Stress DisorderThe purpose of this study is to determine if cognitive processing therapy (CPT) delivered in a massed format (MCPT) is as effective as standard delivery of CPT. MCPT will be delivered in an intensive outpatient setting (12 sessions in 5 days) composed of both group and individual sessions. Standard delivery of CPT consists of 12 sessions over 6 weeks and involves only individual sessions. Assessment of PTSD and related symptoms will be conducted at pre-treatment and 1 month and 4 months following treatment in both conditions. Additionally, in order to compare the treatment groups at the same point in actual time, each group will be assessed at the one month posttreatment time point for the other condition.
Motor Interference Therapy For Traumatic Memories
TraumaPsychological1 moreThe aim of the study is to compare the effect of motor interference therapy (TIM) to reduce the intensity of discomfort (distress) generated by a traumatic memory compared to a relaxation control maneuver, immediately after the intervention, a week, a month and six months after intervention.
Neural Control and Cardiac-Vascular Function in Women With PTSD (VA Psychological Assessment)
Post Traumatic Stress DisorderThe purpose of this research is 1) to investigate the role of the sympathetic nervous system and cardiac-vascular function in women with PTSD; and 2) to determine whether lifestyle modifications (exercise training and healthy eating) would be effective in reducing sympathetic activity, improving cardiovascular function, and improving psychiatric and quality of life outcomes in women with PTSD. It is hypothesized that (1) women with PTSD will have over-activation of the sympathetic nervous system and impaired cardiac-vascular function compared with women who are trauma free, and (2) lifestyle modifications can reduce sympathetic activity, improve cardiac-vascular function, and improve psychiatric symptoms and quality of life in women with PTSD.
Does an Occupational Therapy Program Enhance Mental Health Outcomes for Veterans Who Scuba Dive...
Post Traumatic Stress DisorderDepression3 moreThe purpose of the study is to investigate whether an occupational therapy program could enhance mental health outcomes for veterans who SCUBA dive. SCUBA diving requires modified breathing techniques and has been found to provide calming effects to individuals who engage in this activity. Occupational therapy interventions such as mindfulness, journaling, and deep breathing techniques can also provide similar calming effects. Therefore, this study will explore whether occupational therapy can provide additional benefits to overall mental health of veterans who SCUBA dive.
