Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Background: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the main reason older people lose their vision. It affects the macula, the center of the retina needed for sharp, clear vision. Researchers want to see if an antibiotic can help people with an advanced form of AMD, Geographic Atrophy (GA). Objective: To see if minocycline is safe for people with GA and if it helps preserve their vision. Eligibility: People age 55 and older who have GA in at least one eye. Design: Participants will be screened with physical exam, medical history, blood tests, and eye exam. Participants will take minocycline. They will take 1 pill twice a day for at least 3 years. Participants will have a minimum of 11 study visits. (But they are not every 3 months.). At each visit, participants will have a medical history. They may have: Blood tests. Eye exam. Vision, eye pressure, and eye movements will be checked. The pupils may be dilated. The inside of the eyes may be photographed. Their thyroid gland felt while they swallow. Microperimetry. They will sit in front of a computer and press a button when they see a light on the screen. Fluorescein angiography. An intravenous line (IV) will be placed in an arm vein. A dye called fluorescein will be placed in the IV and travel through the veins to the blood vessels in the eyes. A camera will take pictures of the dye as it flows through the eye blood vessels.

Stereotactic Radiotherapy for Wet AMD (STAR)

Neovascular (Wet) Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

This study investigates the use of radiation to treat wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The radiation is delivered using a robotically controlled device that projects overlapping beams of radiation onto the macula, the part of the eye that is affected by wet AMD. Participants will be randomized to receive radiation (stereotactic radiotherapy) or simulated placebo treatment (sham control). They will be followed up regularly for two years, and then again at the end of three and four years for a safety visit. Participants will also receive injections of ranibizumab (Lucentis) into their eye if their wet AMD is active. Ranibizumab is the standard anti-VEGF agent that is used to treat wet AMD. The study aims to determine if stereotactic radiosurgery can maintain vision and reduce the need for such regular anti-VEGF injections.

Wet Macular Degeneration

This is a study in people with an eye disease called wet age-related macular degeneration (wAMD). The purpose of the study is to find out how well different doses of a medicine called BI 836880 are tolerated. People can participate if they are at least 55 years old and if they have new blood vessels in their eyes despite treatment (anti-VEGF therapies). The study has 2 parts. In the first part, people get only 1 dose of BI 836880. This part takes 6 weeks. In the second part, people get 3 times the same dose of BI 836880. This part takes 6 months. BI 836880 is injected into the eye. During the entire study doctors regularly check the health of the participants.
