Novel Dementia Biomarkers
Alzheimer DiseaseEarly OnsetThe study will investigate structural and functional characteristics of the brain of dementia patients compared to healthy controls in order to get a better insight into importance of early biomarkers for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's dementia. The methods for obtaining biomarkers incude magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and electroencephalography (EEG), electrocardiography (ECG) and neurophyshological assessments. Special parameters are being studied that have already been shown to detect changes in the early stages of Alzheimer's dementia.
The Role of Ophthalmologic Tests and EEG Imaging in Alzheimer's Disease
Mild Cognitive ImpairmentAlzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent, long-term progressive degenerative disorder with great social impact. It is currently thought that, in addition to neurodegeneration, vascular changes also play a role in the pathophysiology of the disease. Meantime, EEG resting state has also demonstrated significant change in patients with AD in neuroscience research area. Thus, the combination of these sensitive biomarkers would lead to a potential new biomarker for detection of AD, which has higher specificity and sensitivity.

PeriodontitisAlzheimer DiseaseThe neurological disorders that accompany aging represent a major public health problem. The management of these diseases is a major medical and social priority. This project is based on the assumption that the oral cavity represents a privileged observation space to address these issues. The mouth is a site of easy access for painless sampling; there is therefore a major interest in identifying early oral infectious markers of the development or evolution of senile dementia. In addition to the interest of an early oral diagnosis, the mapping of the oral microbial flora in the demented elderly would allow a better understanding, prevention or even control of the evolution of neurodegenerative diseases. The final objective of our approach is to characterize the oral pathogens, or more probably the group of oral pathogens, which are significantly associated with Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer DiseasePreclinical Alzheimer's Disease3 moreThe primary objective of the study is to evaluate whether a set of algorithms analysing acoustic and linguistic patterns of speech can detect amyloid-specific cognitive impairment in early stage Alzheimer's disease, based on archival spoken or written language samples, as measured by the AUC of the receiver operating characteristic curve of the binary classifier distinguishing between amyloid positive and amyloid negative arms. Secondary objectives include (1) evaluating how many years before diagnosis of MCI such algorithms work, as measured on binary classifier performance of the classifiers trained to classify MCI vs cognitively normal (CN) arms using archival material from the following time bins before MCI diagnosis: 0-5 years, 5-10 years, 10-15 years, 15-20 years, 20-25 years; (2) evaluating at what age such algorithms can detect later amyloid positivity, as measured on binary classifier performance of the classifiers trained to classify amyloid positive vs amyloid negative arms using archival material from the following age bins: younger than 50, 50-55, 55-60, 65-70, 70-75 years old.

The loss of these emotions, which function as the motivators for social behavior, will manifest in specific interpersonal behaviors. These behaviors will correlate with regional changes in regional changes in medial frontal and anterior temporal lobes. These social and emotional changes will be compared with a young-onset Alzheimer's disease comparison group.
Biomarkers and Early Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's DiseaseThe main goal of this project is to use imaging and biomarkers to identify cognitively normal elderly people who are at increased risk for developing mild cognitive impairment (MCI). MCI is the earliest clinically detectable evidence for brain changes due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). The second goal of this project is to describe the inter-relationships among anatomical biomarkers, cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers, and cognition measures in those elderly people who develop MCI.

In case of need for further examination, a neuropsychological report is made in consultation memory by a neuropsychologist, with further cognitive tests. The Cognitive Neurology Center at Lariboisière Hospital - Fernand Widal has developed a tool on a digital tablet or smartphone to evaluate cognitive functions: MemScreen. The purpose of this study is to validate this new neuropsychological test on tablet compared to the neuropsychological reference tests.
Detecting Dementia in the Retina Using Optical Coherence Tomography

By linking a pseudonymised dataset of three-dimensional retinal scans, called optical coherence tomography, with nationally held data on dementia, corresponding characteristics will be evaluated through descriptive statistics and machine learning techniques.
