Characterizing Variability in Hearing Aid Outcomes in Among Older Adults With Alzheimer's Dementia...

Hearing LossSensorineural2 more

This current translational project, funded by NIH, aims to better understand the impact of various signal modification strategies for older adults with Alzheimer's dementia and its potential precursor, known as amnestic mild cognitive impairment. The investigators hypothesize that adults with Alzheimer's dementia represent an extreme case of restricted cognitive ability, such that very low working memory capacity and overall reduced cognitive capacity will limit benefit from advanced signal processing. Thus, the investigators hypothesize that adults with Alzheimer's dementia will receive greater benefit from acoustically simple, high-fidelity hearing aid processing that minimally alters the acoustic signal.

Promoting Independence With Compensatory Cognitive Rehabilitation

Mild Cognitive ImpairmentAlzheimer Disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the leading causes of disability in older adults. Because pharmacological approaches do not seem to prevent or slow the disease, clinicians need non-pharmacological interventions that might help people with AD remain independent for as long as possible. This study aims to evaluate the effects of a new behavioral treatment, the Structured External Memory Aid Treatment (SEMAT), for adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) designed to promote independent living skills by explicitly teaching the use of strategies and tools to compensate for cognitive weaknesses. Aim 1: Evaluate the efficacy of the SEMAT for improving functional performance in a pilot randomized trial. Aim 2: Evaluate demographic, clinical, and neuropsychological predictors of treatment adherence. Aim 3: Develop and refine the SEMAT manual and other materials for training future interventionists.

Light and the Effect on Metabolic Syndrome and Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer DiseaseDiabetes Mellitus1 more

This study's main hypothesis is that a delivering a tailored lighting intervention (TLI) will provide a successful means for promoting circadian entrainment and treating metabolic disease and inflammation in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). As such, the proposed studies have the potential to provide important insights into the link between AD/ADRD and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) by identifying the disruption of circadian rhythms as a key component in the metabolic impairment. Preliminary data from ongoing studies demonstrates a beneficial effect of light treatment on sleep and depression. If positive results are observed, the potential also exists to transform the manner in which homes, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes are lighted by delivering a simple, practical, non-pharmacological intervention to promote entrainment, improve sleep, and reduce metabolic disease in AD and mild AD MCI patients. This randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover study involving 60 AD/ADRD patients who live in controlled environments (i.e., assisted living facilities and nursing homes), will investigate whether 8 weeks of exposure to a TLI designed to increase circadian entrainment improves sleep, mood, inflammatory markers, and metabolic control, compared to a control, circadian-inactive light.

Sleep Healthy Using the Internet Mitigating Insomnia to Address Neurocognitive Difficulties (SHUTi...

InsomniaCognitive Dysfunction8 more

This randomized controlled trial will evaluate the impact of an Internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) intervention on sleep and the extent to which it contributes to cognitive health in individuals with mild cognitive impairment. Participants with insomnia who meet the study criteria for mild cognitive impairment will be recruited to determine the effects of the CBT-I intervention compared to a patient education condition on sleep and cognition. Internet-based recruitment methods will be used, and outcomes include sleep variables, daytime variables, and cognitive status.

IGC-AD1 Trial on Agitation in Dementia Due to Alzheimer's

Alzheimer DiseaseAgitation,Psychomotor9 more

The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy of an oral medication, IGC-AD1 that is a natural THC-based (Tetrahydrocannabinol) formulation, administered in micro doses, twice a day, on symptomatological Agitation, in patients with mild to severe dementia from Alzheimer's.

Community-based Brain Health Program to Address Dementia Risk

DementiaAlzheimer Disease

This is a validation study to evaluate the acceptability, feasibility and preliminary efficacy of the Brain Health Program, a multimodal curriculum covering dementia risk factors and evidence-based change interventions. The goal of this study is to evaluate the Brain Health Program in individuals with identified risk factors for the onset of dementia and to prepare for a large-scale efficacy trial in this population.
