Total hip replacement surgery is a very successful operation with good long-term results. Hip resurfacing arthroplasty is offered as a treatment option for young and active patients with osteoarthritis of the hip. It has been proposed as a treatment option for younger patients because of claims that it preserves femoral bone stock and has better functional outcomes. The assessment of gait after hip replacement surgery may be able to determine functional differences between patients who have undergone total hip replacement / arthroplasty (THA) versus hip resurfacing.

Evaluating the Impact of the McMaster Optimal Aging Portal on Physical Mobility Outcomes

Mobility Limitation

The McMaster Optimal Aging Portal (the Portal) was launched in 2014 to increase public access to trustworthy health information. The Portal helps readers to access evidence-based resources; identify trustworthy messages; and understand scientific findings. Now the investigators want to know whether using the Portal changes what people know and do to stay healthy and mobile. This project will help us to: Understand how middle aged and older adults (age 40+) use the Portal to obtain information about maintaining and improving mobility Evaluate whether use of the Portal results in a change in knowledge about maintaining and improving mobility, or change in lifestyle behaviours that may help maintain or improve mobility with age.

The main objective of the proposed study is to evaluate the impact of coronavirus (2019-nCoV), hereafter COVID -19, on patients' loss of functional capacity after completion of hospital treatment. Specifically, the research will focus on examining changes in musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and respiratory function, as well as motor control. In addition, we aim to evaluate rehabilitation treatments after recovery from COVID -19 and consider additional preventive measures based on previous experience.

Mobility and Attention Capacity in Former Premature Children

Attention functions have a major impact on children's social and school behavior. They are an important issue for prematurely born children often seen as having learning difficulties and being restless, when it could be an adaptative answer to attention disorders. The aim of this study is to evaluate attention capacity in former premature children aged 6-7 years old with regards to different postures or mobility, for the attention functions of orienting, alerting and executive control. The Attention Network Test using reaction time and accuracy to visual stimuli will be used to evaluate attention functions in each posture and mobility.

Study Design: Evaluation of the psychometric properties of a translated, culturally adapted questionnaire. Objective: Translating, culturally adapting, and validating the Italian version of the Dance Functional Outcome Survey (DFOS-IT), allowing its use with Italian-speaking dancers to evaluate their musculoskeletal health and wellbeing inside and outside Italy. Summary of Background Data: Musculoskeletal injuries are a phenomenon of huge prevalence and has been a major focus within peer-reviewed literature since the 1980s. Growing attention is devoted to standardized outcome measures to improve interventions for injured dancers. A translated form of the DFOS, the only existing outcome measure that focus on the unique functional requirements of dancers, has never been validated within the Italian dancers population.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune, demyelinating disease of the central nervous system that causes different levels of disability with motor and sensory loss. Although the signs and symptoms of the disease vary according to the location of the lesion; loss of strength, spasticity, sensory disturbances, fatigue, ataxia, autonomic dysfunction and decreased visual acuity are frequently seen. One of the most important causes of loss of function is balance problems. Balance problems, on the other hand, result in falls that cause severe injuries. One of the most important goals in the rehabilitation of individuals with MS is to increase their performance by minimizing the risk of falling in their daily lives. For medical professionals, many medical history questionnaires, self-assessment measures and performance-based tests have been developed to determine the risk of falls. Performance-based functional assessments consist of a timed walk and walk test, functional skill, balance and fall risk, 5 times sit-and-go test and Berg Balance Test, 4 square step test and gait speed measurement tests. These tests include the ability to walk forward and revolve around ones priorities. However, walking is a more difficult activity as it involves neuromuscular control and is dependent on proprioception and protective reflexes. In daily life activities, there is a need to walk backwards to perform tasks such as leaning against a chair and opening the door. This movement can be quite challenging especially for elderly people with neurological deficits. It has been noted that the mechanical measurements of the back support, in particular the speed, the step length, and the double support surface are significantly reduced in older adults. In a study conducted in geriatric individuals, it was shown that walking backward was more sensitive to detect age-related changes in mobility and balance than walking forward. The aim of this study is to determine the validity and reliability of the 3-meter backwards walk test for evaluating performance-based fall risk in individuals with MS.

Promoting Movement in Older Adults in the Community

It is well known that exercise is great medicine, however, for frail older adults who are often homebound and require assistance with personal care, there are gaps in both prescribing this "medicine" and in filling the prescription. The investigators will uncover and address the barriers that prevent frail older adults from increasing their level of physical activity. With input from frail older adults, caregivers, and healthcare providers, the investigators will create a free, easy to use, home-based program that incorporates physical activity such as gentle stretches and range of motion exercises when personal care is being provided. This innovation will add great value to the type of care that is being provided to homebound frail older adults. Incorporating physical activity as part of the care provided offers a unique opportunity for homebound frail older adults to move more, and improve their well-being.
