Expanded Access IND Administration of HBOC-201 in Patients With Severe Acute Anemia

Anemia Severe

HBOC-201 provides an oxygen treatment bridge and can be used to eliminate, delay, or reduce the need for red blood cell transfusions in anemic patients This is an expanded access IND protocol, and will provide treatment with HBOC-201 to severely anemic adults for whom blood is not an option

Improving Diagnosis in Idiopathic Cytopenia Using Gene Sequencing

Cytopenia

10% of the cases referred to the specialist diagnostic haemato-pathology service at RMH are for cytopenias. The hypothesis to be tested is that a proportion of patients with idiopathic cytopenias have mutations in myelodysplasic syndrome (MDS)-associated genes. The investigators will sequence a panel of known MDS-associated genes in patient material (bone marrow and blood) that is sent routinely to the diagnostic service where conventional techniques have failed to establish a clear diagnosis. 200 patients with idiopathic cytopenia will be followed up to determine their survival, blood counts and development of acute leukaemia and other haematological malignancies. The clinical outcomes will be correlated with any mutations detected.

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and Cranial Doppler in Premature Newborns With Anemia

Anemia of Prematurity

It is aimed in this study to examine the changes in brain blood supply and oxygenation in neonatal premature babies who have anemia and who underwent erythrocyte suspension transfusion in the light of original guidelines by means of obtaining measurements with the help of cranial doppler ultrasonography and near-infrared spectroscopy.

Sickle Cell Anemia - A Comparative Study Between Three Ethnical Communities, a Multicenter Study...

Sickle Cell AnemiaSickle Cell β+ or β0 Thalassemia

The purpose of this study is to take advance of the presence of two different cohorts of SCA patients in one country, the first group included SCA patients from Bedouin Arab origin that lives in Israel for more than one century and originally comes from African countries or Saudi Arabia, those patients lives in north east Israel and are treated at the Hematology Unit of the Emek Medical Center, the second group are SCA patients from African origin that come to Israel in the last decades and belong to original African population, this group receive treatment at the Pediatric Hematology Unit, Dana Children's Hospital, Ichilov Medical Center. A third group is a cohort of SCA patients treated at Schneider Children's Hospital Hematology Unit. Those patients belong also to the Israel Arab population and patients from a village that African Muslims live for many years. The characteristics of the three groups will be compared to the characteristics of a fourth group, a cohort of Afro-American SCA patients that are followed up and treated at the Pediatric Hematology Unit, Detroit Children's Medical Center, Detroit, Michigan, USA.

Prevalence Study of the Etiology of Pregnancy Anemia

Pregnancy Anemia

Anemia during pregnancy occurs in 41% of women. The most common etiology is iron deficiency, but studies to determine prevalence of other causes of anemia in pregnancy are still lacking. However, anemia in pregnancy lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes and increase risk of maternal and fœtal morbidity and mortality. Specific management of anemia is so needed.

Role of T Follicular Helper Cells in Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (TFH in AIHA)

Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia

T follicular helper (TFH) cells represent a T cell subset dedicated to the activation of B cells. They have been involved in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases in humans such as lupus and Sjögren disease. We recently showed that TFH are implicated in the activation of autoreactive B lymphocytes during ITP. Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is an autoimmune disease due to antibodies targeting red blood cells. To date, the role of TFH in the pathogenesis of AIHA is not known. We hypothesize that AIHA is associated with an increase in the number and/or function of TFH, that could participate in the activation of autoreactive B lymphocytes.

Evaluation of a Clinical Decision Support System for Anemia Management in Pre-operative Care

Decision Support SystemsAnemia

Anemia need to be diagnosed and treated, following several guidelines. However, the complexity of these recommendations leads to low compliance and to unnecessary and harmful per- and postoperative blood transfusion. In order to improve practices and regarding the complexity of the guidelines, the latest European Consensus Conference recommends the use of decision support systems for the management of preoperative anemia.
