AnemiaThe current standard for anemia screening, complete blood count, presents invasiveness, infrastructure requirements and high costs, leading to serious underestimation of anemia prevalence and insufficient care for anemia patients. Here, the investigators established and validated an artificial intelligence system to achieve automatic detection of anemia based on patient-sourced images of fingernails and conjunctivae. This system has been integrated into a smartphone app to be further validated through hospital-based and population-based clinical trials.

Hip FracturesAnemia1 moreHip fractures (HF) are the most common and serious pathology affecting the hip and are associated with a high mortality risk in elderly patients. The prevalence of HF is increasing day by day and surgery is often required for its treatment. Perioperative anemia not only hinders the early recovery and rapid rehabilitation of elderly patients, but also adversely increases the need for blood transfusion, prolongs hospital length of stay (HLS) and even increases the risk of death. Although the blood transfusion threshold is restrictive, approximately one or two thirds of elderly patients with hip fracture surgery (HFS) require blood transfusion during hospitalization, and blood transfusion also has potential side effects.The most important factor in the development of anemia in HF is blood loss; however, there are other mechanisms (renal failure, inflammation, iatrogenic hemodilution) that lead to the selection of different therapeutic approaches.Oral or intravenous iron supplementation is a well-accepted alternative to counteract or prevent perioperative anemia, stimulate erythropoiesis and increase Hgb level in elderly patients. However, there are few studies addressing the relationship between iron therapy and clinical outcomes or mortality. Because ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) allows doses of 2 g in a single session (and can be administered by a short IV infusion of 15-20 minutes), and furthermore, FCM is excellently tolerated and safe for patients. This study was planned to investigate the relationship between FCM supplementation and blood transfusion volume, HLS, postoperative infection and mortality.

Anemia Studies in CKD: Erythropoiesis Via a Novel PHI Daprodustat - Pediatric (ASCEND-P)
AnaemiaThis is an international, multicenter trial, evaluating pharmacokinetics (PK) (4 weeks), safety (52 weeks), and hemoglobin (Hgb) response (52 weeks) to daprodustat in children and adolescent participants with anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) incorporating 2 independent sub-trials (Non dialysis [ND] and Dialysis [D]). This study will enroll participants with anemia associated with CKD, in 2 distinct sub-populations differing only by their CKD stage and dialysis requirement (ND: CKD stage 3 to 5 not yet receiving dialysis and D: CKD stage 5d undergoing peritoneal dialysis [PD] or hemodialysis [HD]). The maximum duration of the study will be approximately 60 weeks, including Screening period (up to 4 weeks), treatment period (52 weeks), and follow-up period (4 weeks). Outcome measures are identical for the ND and D sub-trials, but will be separately assessed in each sub- trials, overall and within each age subgroups (12 to less than [<] 18 years, 6 to <12 years, 2 to <6 years, and 3 months to <2 years). Except for PK and dose change, which is within each age group only.

With a simple blood test, rare genetic conditions can be easily detected, and the early start of transformative treatment will help avoid severe disabilities and increase the quality of life. Baby Detect Project is an innovative NBS program using a panel of target sequencing that aims to identify 126 treatable severe early onset genetic diseases at birth caused by 361 genes. The list of diseases has been established in close collaboration with the Paediatricians of the University Hospital in Liege. The investigators use dedicated dried blood spots collected between the first day and 28 days of life of babies, after a consent sign by parents.

Iron Deficiency AnemiaIron Deficiency Anemia of Pregnancy4 moreAs a follow-up to the RAPIDIRON Trial (NCT05358509), and in combination with the RAPIDIRON-KIDS Study (NCT05504863), this study will involve infants of RAPIDIRON Trial participants recruited at one site in Karnataka and is designed to implement a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) protocol and incorporate neuroimaging measures. Implementation of this study will promote an understanding of the effects on fetal and neonatal brain development, including iron deposition in brain tissues, when a woman is treated for iron deficiency anemia (IDA) by either (a) providing her oral iron tablets and instructions for use; or (b) administering a single-dose IV iron infusion for the treatment of IDA during pregnancy.

Because RBCs carry the oxygen your body needs to function, anemia can affect one's ability to stay awake, alert, and perform physical activities. Anemia may happen for several reasons, including increased RBC destruction. Anemia often occurs in people who have been in bed for long periods (e.g., if they are very sick) or have decreased mobility (anemia of immobility). Interestingly, astronauts who have left Earth and traveled in space also return anemic. In fact, 5 decades of NASA data showed that astronauts' anemia was more severe the longer they were in space. In another study, astronauts aboard the International Space Station were shown to destroy 54% more of their RBCs in space. RBC destruction may be the culprit of space anemia as well as anemia of immobility on Earth. The ANEMIA Study proposes to measure key aspects of RBC destruction in astronauts in space. These measures will test critical hypotheses on the effects of spaceflight on red blood cells.
