Effectiveness of Cannabinoids on Appetite in Scleroderma

The cannabinoid has benefits in many aspects but the evidence of the effect of cannabinoids in humans with SSc is limited. We, therefore, would like to investigate the efficacy of cannabinoids on the appetite, sleep efficiency, quality of life, pain, and critical cytokine level in SSc compared with placebo in SSc patients and the adverse events associated with cannabinoids in those patients.

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia Nervosa is a serious life-threatening illness with a typical age of onset in adolescence; if not effectively treated, it has the potential to significantly impact adolescent development and quality of life. Research on executive functioning in anorexia nervosa indicates that it may be a viable target for intervention that could improve outcome. The current project focuses on determining whether or not the investigators can improve set-shifting in affected adolescents in the hopes that improvements in set-shifting will, ultimately, improve outcome.

Theta Burst Stimulation in Anorexia Nervosa: A Case Series

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a life-threatening eating disorder characterised by an intense fear of weight gain and disturbed body image, which motivates severe dietary restriction or other weight loss behaviours (e.g. purging). Treatment efficacy in adults with AN remains low: only a small percentage of individuals fully recover, and dropout rates are high. For adolescents with a relatively short term illness duration (under 3 years), family-based therapy has been associated with more favourable outcomes. However, for those adolescents with a longer illness duration (over 3 years), there are no specific treatments associated with positive long-term outcomes and these individuals are at risk of developing a severe and enduring form of the illness (SE-AN). In part, treatment can be problematic due to ambivalence, which is reflected in poor take-up of certain treatments (e.g. pharmacological treatments that lead to weight gain) and high drop-out rates. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has demonstrated efficacy for treatment of AN in adults and improving treatment adherence. However, this has yet to be investigated in adolescents with AN. This study will use a novel type of rTMS, called intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS). TBS takes as little as a few minutes duration compared to the classical rTMS protocol which takes approximately 37.5 minutes. In addition, TBS has been found to produce longer after-effects of the induced plastic changes and has a lower stimulation intensity, which may therefore be more practical and potentially safer to administer in people with AN. Thus, the aim of this feasibility case series is to obtain preliminary data on the longer-term (i.e. up to 6 months) effects of 20 sessions of iTBS on reducing core symptoms of AN.

Deep Brain Stimulation for Severe Anorexia Nervosa

The somatic complications as well as the suicidal risk make Anorexia Nervosa (AN) the psychiatric disease with the highest mortality rate: the standardized mortality ratio is higher than 4 and 1 in 5 patients with AN who dies has committed suicide. Approximately 20% of patients suffering from AN evolves into a chronic form without prolonged remission. These patients are at high risk of serious complications (somatic and psychiatric). The peak incidence of AN lies between 15 and 19 years: patients suffering from severe and resistant AN are therefore mostly young people. At present, there is no treatment for severe and resistant AN. New insights in AN pathophysiology revealed that AN patients develop a kind of "addiction" to thinness which contributes to weight loss despite negative consequences. In parallel, Deep Brain Simulation (DBS) is now widely performed for movements disorders with good results and low morbidity. DBS is also currently under investigations for other indications such as obsessional compulsive disorder or pharmacoresistant epilepsy. Some case series reported promising results of DBS for severe and resistant AN. The aim of this study is to investigate the safety of nucleus accumbens chronic stimulation for patients enduring severe and resistant AN. Secondary objective is to evaluate patient's acceptance of this new treatment.

The goal of this randomized clinical trial is to test the efficacy of self-management support based exercise combine nutrition intervention in lung cancer patient with cancer cachexia anorexia syndrome . The main question it aims to answer is: • Would exercise combine nutrition intervention improve lung cancer patients' nutrition status? Participants will make custom exercise plan and eat enough protein food after self-management support based education. And there is a comparison group: Researchers will compare comparison group to see nutrition status who receive routine health education.

Effect of a Novel Protein Supplement on Appetite in Older Adults

An acute randomized crossover trial comparing the effects of the whey hydrolysate, whey protein concentrate and placebo (still flavored water) on appetite and energy intake in older adults. Both low-dose whey-derived treatment and placebo will be administered 30 minutes prior to breakfast and lunch meals. Moreover, ghrelin secretion and activity will be monitored throughout the morning until the lunch time. Appetite will be assessed through visual analogue scale questionnaires.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in the Treatment of Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is a severe psychiatric disorder associated with food avoidance and body image distortion, that is feeling fat despite being underweight. It is the third most common chronic illness among adolescent females, and its mortality reaches its peak between the ages 16 and 29 years old. There are very few treatments for anorexia nervosa and especially no biological treatments have been approved. Recent brain imaging research has repeatedly implicated brain circuits that include the insula in the disorder. The insula is a brain region important in taste processing as well as in the integration of body perception and has strong connections to the brain reward system. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a relatively new methodology that has been shown to alter neurocircuitry and alleviate depression. Here, the study goal is to develop TMS as a methodology to change altered neurocircuitry in anorexia nervosa and alleviate disorder specific behaviors.
