Using Attention Training to Reduce Adolescents' Anxious Symptoms

Attentional BiasAnxiety

During adolescence, youth undergo rapid developmental change and in some cases experience increases in worries and fearfulness, although the mechanisms that underlie this change are unclear. Previous studies indicate that heightened Attentional Bias (AB) toward threat-related cues may increase fearfulness, and it may be possible to change AB using a computerized, Attention Bias Modification task (ABM). This study will recruit healthy youth with elevated anxious symptoms to index attentional tendencies toward threat-related stimuli using cutting-edge techniques, and to test the effect of a computerized attention training task in altering attention to threatening cues. The investigators will also examine the role of ABM in changing youth's attention-related resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC), a neural marker of at-rest cognition.

iPad Use in Reducing Anxiety and Depression in Patients Undergoing Bone Marrow Transplant

AnxietyDepression1 more

This randomized clinical trial studies iPad use in reducing anxiety and depression in patients undergoing bone marrow transplant. A tablet device like the iPad can provide access to music, television, movies, books, and the Internet. It also contains a video conferencing system that can allow patients to communicate with family members and other members of their social support team. With these capabilities, an iPad distribution program may help lessen patient anxiety and depression during a hospital stay. Monitoring iPad use by patients may help doctors better understand how patients use their computers and tablets while in the hospital so that the software and applications of the iPad can be made more useful.

Vırtual Reality, Music Therapy and Stress Ball-related Pain and Anxiety

PainAnxiety

Outpatient surgical interventions; It is defined as surgical applications where the application time is short, the risk of complications is low, there is no need for intensive care after the intervention, and the patients can be discharged on the same day. It is applied in areas such as otolaryngology and maxillofacial surgery. Among all these areas, gynecological surgery is the area where the most outpatient surgery is performed. Some of the gynecological procedures that are generally applied in day surgery are as follows; Colposcopy, hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, dilatation-curettage, laparoscopic tubal ligation, treatment of the cervix with cautery or laser, removal of vulvar cysts, laser conization, cervical polypectomy and removal of Bartholin cysts. In many state hospitals in our country, in daily gynecological surgical procedures; in some cases by premedication, in some cases under local anesthesia; however, patients are usually processed without anesthesia. Virtual Reality, which is a type of computer system using human-machine interfaces, has been used in pain and anxiety management in different applications in many areas known as painful medical procedures in recent years. Music therapy is defined as "the systematic use of music in a therapeutic relationship aimed at improving, maintaining and advancing emotional, physical and mental health". Music therapy has important physiological effects that reduce heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and respiratory rate, distract attention, increase the quality of life of patients, and reduce pain. Stress ball emerges as a simple, reliable, inexpensive, and easily accessible method that helps patients reduce their anxiety. Squeezing the stress ball during the surgical procedure allows patients to have direct control over the object, increasing feelings of empowerment. In this way, it has a positive effect on anxiety and patient satisfaction without interfering with the surgical procedure. Based on all these reasons; The aim of this study is to determine the effects of virtual reality, music therapy, and stress ball applications on vital signs, pain, anxiety, and patient satisfaction during daily gynecological surgery.

Web-based CBT for Symptoms of Mild-to-Moderate Anxiety and Depression in Youth With Chronic Illness...

DepressionAnxiety3 more

Symptoms of anxiety and depression are common in adolescents and young adults with chronic illnesses and are associated with decreased adherence to medical regimens. However, many young patients go untreated for anxiety and depression. The purpose of this study is to evaluate an online cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program in young adults with chronic illness. Prior research has shown online CBT to be effective in multiple other populations, but to the investigators' knowledge, this is the first study to examine web-based CBT for young adults with chronic illnesses.

Virtual Reality and Relaxation for the Treatment of Generalized Anxiety Disorders: a Comparative...

Generalized Anxiety Disorders

The purpose is threefold: Assess the anxiety reduction, the mood positive effect and the rise of quality of life when using methods of relaxation combined with virtual reality with patients suffering from generalized anxiety disorder in comparison of the effect of traditional relaxation therapy. Observe and evaluate the effect of perceived presence in synthetic environments in the virtual experience of relaxation. Evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of stereoscopy during exposure to relaxing virtual environments for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder. It is a comparative, randomized, two groups study (29 in each group): Relaxation optimized virtual reality Classical relaxation (without Virtual Reality). The protocol comprised for each groups 7 relaxing sessions (with or without virtual reality epending on the group). Each session lasted for approximately 30 to 35 minutes, including a 5-minute pause between immersive trials, in order to avoid cyber sickness in the virtual reality group. Expected results: a measurable therapeutic improvement produced by the combination of relaxation and virtual and its additional effect when compared to the traditional treatment. Measurements of variables and therapeutic effects will be carried out with psychometric measures. The creation process of the relaxing virtual environments has already been completed. The virtual environments are ready for use. The apparatus needed and in our possession include: A laptop for generating virtual environments A stereoscopic display Apparatus for physiological measurements
