Correlates of Anxiety Associated With a Life-threatening Illness
AnxietyIn this study, people will be undergoing brain scans with functional magnetic imaging (fMRI) while they perform an emotional regulation task that involves observing either neutral images or images known to induce negative emotions, with instructions either to view passively or attempt to reduce the negative affect associated with the images. Resting state brain scans (with no explicit task) will also be acquired. Heart rate variability will be measured during these resting state scans. While in the scanner, subjects will also listen to prerecorded audio scripts about life stresses for themselves and for another person with instructions to practice compassion for themselves or for others. In yet another task, they will respond to pictures known to produce positive and negative emotions and perform an attention related task. The scans will take place once before and at least once after undergoing sessions of methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) assisted psychotherapy. Brain scans will happen three times: an initial scan before placebo or MDMA-assisted psychotherapy, a second scan after either two placebo or two MDMA sessions (depending on whether the subject was in the placebo or MDMA group), and one final scan after the conclusion of three active MDMA sessions.
Different Music Types in Reducing Dental Anxiety in Young People
Dental AnxietyAnxiety is an important issue in dental care for adults, children and adolescents. Dental anxiety affects 10-20% of adults and 43% of children and adolescents. Dental anxiety often leads to avoiding dental treatment; this can cause serious deterioration of oral and dental health. Such deterioration can significantly increase dental care costs. Therefore, reducing anxiety is important both in terms of patient, physician and cost. Music intervention is a psychological therapy that has many advantages when used in outpatient treatment, including cost-effectiveness, lack of negative physical effects, rapid effect, lack of safety in terms of non-use and lack of concern for recovery. Some types of studies suggested but not tested against each other include classical music, soft rock, calming music, pop, easy listening music, and music of choice. With the contradictory results of various studies, the fact that the distraction of music and its distraction on the reduction of tooth anxiety is not common shows that a more structured study is needed. The lack of precise data on the effects of different music types on anxiety has led to this study.
Therapeutic Communication Training of the Stretcher Bearers on the Patient Anxiety (STRESSCOM)
AnxietyAnxiety is a form of psychic and/or physical discomfort caused by the feeling of the imminence of a danger. It is a frequent perioperative manifestation of patients. Pharmacological premedication is currently used to avoid perioperative anxiety. However, its effect is now controversial and non-drug techniques have been also studied. The therapeutic communication aims to provide analgesia or anxiolysis to enhance the patient's well-being and to separate the patient from the surrounding reality through the suggestion of positive images with a chosen verbal and nonverbal approach. This prospective, monocentric, comparative, double-blind study aims to evaluate the impact of the training of stretcher-bearers in therapeutic communication on the anxiety of patients who go to the operating room for an endoscopic examination under general anaesthesia. Two groups of patients will be compared: In the first group patients will be accompanied to the operating room by a stretcher-bearer trained in therapeutic communication, in the second group patients will be accompanied by a stretcher bearer without this specific training.
Does Watching Video Increase the Perioperative Anxiety in Patients Undergoing Third Molar Surgery...
AnxietyThird molar extraction is the most common surgical procedure in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery and usually cause anxiety. Although different informed consent methods have been used previously, the most effective information method that provide the optimum anxiety management is still not clear. Therefore, investigators planned a clinical study to explore the effect of different information formats (verbal information with written document and verbal information with written document subsequent to watching video from internet) on peri-operative anxiety of the participants who scheduled to undergo impacted lower third molar surgery. Also, investigators aimed to explore the effect internet usage before the third molar surgery on the level of anxiety.
Courageous Parents, Courageous Children
Anxiety DisorderAnxiety disorders usually start in childhood and adolescence and are associated with social and occupational difficulties in adulthood. Children who have a parent with an anxiety disorder and who find new situations distressing and avoid them are at an increased risk for developing an anxiety disorder. Research suggests that anti-anxiety parenting can help children grow up courageous and calm. It is, however, difficult to parent in an anti-anxiety way when the parent has an anxiety disorder himself or herself. This research study will test the efficacy of a new program designed to prevent the onset or persistence of anxiety disorders in children at risk for anxiety disorders. The investigators will first help parents learn skills to cope with their own anxiety and then coach them to share these skills with their children and parent in an anti-anxiety way. The goal is to intervene early enough in the children's lives so that they can be free of anxiety disorders and lead happy, healthy and productive lives in adulthood.
Promoting Attachment Through Healing
Stress DisordersPost-Traumatic2 moreIntimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant and pervasive public health challenge and is associated with mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although the perinatal period may be a time of greater risk for experiencing IPV, and greater vulnerability to PTSD symptomatology, a lack of research exists pertaining to the identification/treatment of IPV-related PTSD symptoms during this period. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, and employing a feminist, intersectional framework, the effectiveness of trauma-informed cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) among pregnant survivors of IPV experiencing PTSD symptomatology on depression, anxiety, PTSD and maternal-infant attachment will be explored.
Attention Training to Modify Error-related Negativity and Risk for Anxiety in Adolescence
AnxietyThis is a multi-site study to examine error-related brain activity (i.e., the error-related negativity) and anxiety symptoms in 11 to 14 year-olds (N=600) at two time points separated by two years. The study examines the degree to which error-related negativity can predict anxiety prospectively over two years, and whether a computerized game that alters attention to threat can alter error-related negativity and trajectories of anxiety.
Evaluation of a Biofeedback Tool to Minimize Procedural Pain and Anxiety in Children
PainAnxietyBelly breathing is a popular relaxation technique used to reduce anxiety and pain in children during medical procedures. The investigators have developed a biofeedback game that will help teach children how to belly breathe in an interactive way. Existing studies have shown that biofeedback tools are effective ways to teach relaxation techniques to children. The purpose of this study is to evaluate 1) whether this new biofeedback tool is a more a effective and engaging way to teach belly breathing to children and 2) whether the application is more effective in reducing procedural pain and anxiety compared to standard of care, self-directed belly breathing alone or self-directed belly-breathing combined with visual distraction. The investigators hypothesize that: The smartphone-based biofeedback game for belly breathing will reduce self-reported procedural anxiety and pain in children during a blood collection procedure compared to: standard of care belly breathing + standard care procedures belly breathing with visual components of the application with no coaching or biofeedback distraction. The smartphone-based biofeedback game will increase compliance with belly breathing compared to self-directed breathing. Belly breathing with smartphone-based biofeedback game will be more engaging compared to self-directed belly breathing.
Anxiety, Depression and Substance Use in Undergraduate Health Science Students During the Covid-19...
DepressionAnxiety1 moreA study will be conducted with a quantitative approach with correlational scope, observational analytical study, prospective cross-sectional. The objective is to compare the levels of anxious symptomatology, depressive symptomatology and substance use in university students who were exposed to SARS-CoV-2 with those who were not.
Postoperative Effects of Preoperative Anxiety
AnxietyPain1 moreINTRODUCTION Patients who will have obesity surgery have about %48 psychiatric illnesses like anxiety disorder. Studies which analyze the relationship between preoperative anxiety level and postoperative pain had reported conflicting results. The aim of this study is to search the relationship between preoperative anxiety level and postoperative pain and analgesic consumption in patients who had laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS Our prospective double-blind study is planned to require 86 female patients aged between 18-65 years old, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) I-II and Body mass index (BMI) ≥40 kg/m^2. Patients having a psychiatric or neurologic disease, brain damage, using psychiatric medications (antidepressants, anxiolytics) and chronic alcohol, known allergy to medications used in the study protocol, inability to provide informed consent will be excluded. Patients will be wanted to fill the Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory the night before the surgery. The analgesic consumption of the patients will be recorded by evaluating the pain with Visual analog scale (VAS) and sedation status with Ramsay's sedation scale in the 1st, 4th, 12th and 24th hour of postoperative period. EXPECTATIONS AND SCIENTIFIC CONTRIBUTIONS More satisfying postoperative analgesia may be provided in this group of patients by determining correlation between preoperative anxiety level and postoperative pain and analgesic consumption in patients who had laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Morbidity rate related with pain may be decreased and patient satisfaction may be increased.
