Effectiveness of Intensive Aphasia Therapy Under Routine Clinical Conditions

Speech Therapy for Aphasia: Comparing Two Treatments
StrokeThis is a behavioral speech therapy trial for individuals who have suffered a stroke on the left side of the brain and have difficulty speaking. The name of this disorder is called "aphasia." Individuals in this study will receive one of two treatments. The first is a phonological (sound level) treatment and the second is a semantic (word level) treatment. Individuals in both groups will receive 60 hours of therapy for free (2 hours/day, 5 days/week, 6 weeks).
Transcranial Direct Stimulation (tDCS) and Behavioral Intervention in Aphasia
AphasiaWe hypothesize patients who have difficulty with word recall (naming pictures) due to a stroke will experience greater benefit in word recall after receiving a combination of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and traditional behavioral treatment. This study will investigate the effects of the timing of tDCS in relationship to the behavioral treatment to determine the most optimal protocol. Transcranial direct current stimulation involves placing two electrodes on your scalp and sending a very small electrical current to excite the brain cells of the target site.
Memantine and Intensive Speech-Language Therapy in Aphasia
AphasiaStrokeAphasia, the loss or impairment of language caused by brain damage, is one of the most devastating cognitive impairments of stroke. Aphasia can be treated with combination of speech-language therapy and drugs. Conventional speech-language therapy in chronic aphasic subjects is of little help and several drugs have been studied with limited success. Therefore other therapeutic strategies are warranted. Recent data suggest that drugs (memantine) acting on the brain chemical glutamate may help the recovery of cognitive deficits, included language, in subjects with vascular dementia. The present study examines the safety profile and efficacy of memantine paired with intensive language therapy in subjects with stroke-related chronic aphasia (more than 1 yr. of evolution).

Word-Retrieval Treatment for Aphasia: Semantic Feature Analysis

The treatment is designed to strengthen meaning associations within categories of words (e.g., animals, tools, fruits). The treatment is also designed to be used as a search strategy in instances of word-finding difficulty. The study was devised to evaluate the extent to which treatment increases the ability to recall trained, as well as untrained, words.
Effect of Music on Reading Comprehension in Patients With Aphasia
AphasiaThe purpose of this investigation is to examine the evidence on emotion, language, and music, and propose a first step, in the form of a single-subject research design, to determine the most effective and efficient method for application to the rehabilitation of patients with aphasia. A single-subject adapted alternating treatment design will be used to compare two music conditions, using music with sung lyrics simultaneously with reading of the lyrics, and priming with music and sung lyrics followed by a reading of the lyrics, with a control condition using reading lyrics without music. Results are expected to provide evidence of independent versus shared processing of music and language at the phrase level applied to the behavior of human subjects with aphasia.
Finding the Right Words in Neurogenic Communication Disorders
AnomiaStroke3 moreEvery year thousands of persons suffer from brain damage resulting in anomia, that is, word finding difficulties affecting their ability to talk to other people. Anomia may be a result of stroke or of progressive neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis (MS). Word retrieval is dependent on a complex system of different neural networks and to name objects and activities can be affected to different degrees. The present project explores different aspects of naming ability in altogether 90 persons that has anomia related to stroke or to Parkinson's disease or MS. Furthermore, the communicative strategies and resources used by conversation partners in everyday conversational interaction and in care situations, affected by anomia are studied. Finally, the project includes a study of the effectiveness of a word finding training program based on stimulation of semantic and phonological networks in the brain, involved in the production of words. There is a lack of research on effects on communication from anomia in Parkinson's disease and MS and there is no research on anomia that investigates both object and action naming using a material adapted to the Swedish language. In the project quantitative and qualitative methods are used to explore and describe how persons with different neurogenic communication disorders can use different resources and communicative strategies to express themselves.
