Obstructive Sleep Apnea

A project of the feasibility of using NightOwl to detect the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). The long-term aim is to use the device to screen for OSA in a randomized clinical trial in AF patients undergoing ablation and/or a randomized trial of AF patients undergoing cardioversion.

The OAMMM study is a mono-centrer , non interventional, prospective study, carried out in CH Valence Oral Appliance is indicated for first line moderate sleep Apnea Syndrome or severe sleep Apnea Syndrome after failure of positive airway pressure (CPAP). Clinical impact of each mm advancement of Oral Appliance is imperfectly assessed. The study aim to assess clinical and paraclinical efficacy of an oral Appliance on each mm of advancement.

Background:Metabolic syndrome is a disorder characterized by abdominal obesity,hypertension,increased triglycerides ,decreased HDL cholesterol and increased blood glucose. Accumulating evidence strongly indicates that insulin resistance and an increased amount of abdominal fat are the pathogenic factors for the characteristics of metabolic syndrome. Studies indicate that sleep apnea may be a manifestation of the metabolic syndrome. Subjects and methods:This study was conducted in the pulmonology department at kasrelainy hospital. It included 80 patients who came to the sleep lab unit for polysomnography. Each patient was subjected to full history taking including(sex,age,smoking history,presence of diabetes or hypertension),thorough clinical examination with emphasis on waist, neck&hip circumference and blood pressure measurements,Laboratory investigations including :Lipid profile& Diabetic profile(HBA1C).In addition to ESS and stop bang score questionnaire.

This was an experimental clinical trial, Aim: To evaluate the role of early use of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) in management of moderate to severe Coronavirus disease 2019 patients at risk of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, enrolled patients are randomized into two equal groups;Non- CPAP group and CPAP group. Non-CPAP group will receive medical treatment plus oxygen therapy according to recommendation of protocol of the Egyptian Ministry of Health 2020 and CPAP group as in Non-CPAP group plus using CPAP.

The prevalence of childhood obesity has increased at an alarming rate over the last decades, both globally and in Denmark. There are a number of serious sequelae related to obesity, such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, fatty liver and prediabetes. Obesity is found to be a risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA in childhood is known to be associated with cardiovascular complications, neurocognitive problems and reduced quality of life. The correlation between obesity and OSA is still poorly understood. Early detection and intervention is of great importance as the health consequences related to OSA as well as obesity are severe. Adenotonsillectomy is recommended as first-line therapy in children with OSA. However, only around 25% of obese children benefit from this treatment compared to around 75% of normal-weight children suggesting that there might be other structural factors predisposing to OSA in obese children. In this study the investigators aim to clarify the impact of obesity in the development of OSA. The prevalence of OSA in obese children will be investigated. Furthermore the purpose is to assess the effect of weight loss on OSA.

A Research Study for Children About Heart Changes and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

In this research study the investigators want to learn more about the risk of developing blood vessel and heart disease from night-time sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition that results from blocking of the throat during sleep. This study examines changes in blood pressure, blood vessel stiffness, heart size and levels of specific substances in the blood which may cause heart disease. This study is for children ages 5 to 13 years. The study involves 3 visits over 18 months. The first and last visits include an overnight sleep study (polysomnography or PSG). All the visits will include: body measurements to measure growth and how weight is distributed, resting blood pressure measurements, heart measurements (electrocardiogram and ultrasounds of the heart and blood vessels), 36 hour home ambulatory blood pressure measurements, blood tests to look at things like fats, cholesterol, inflammatory factors, questionnaires Optional parts of the study include DNA and for children 8 years and older, testing and questionnaires to learn more about how sleep relates to learning, memory and behavior issues.
