Erectile Dysfunction in Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Effects of CPAP Therapy

Obstructive Sleep ApneaErectile Dysfunction

Obstructive sleep apnea has been linked to erectile dysfunction. Furthermore, small studies suggest that treatment of sleep apnea by continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) may reverse erectile dysfunction in affected patients. The present study aims to investigate in a larger cohort if severe sleep apnea is independently associated with erectile dysfunction and if 6-12 months of CPAP therapy lead to an improvement of erectile dysfunction.

A Prospective Multicenter Registry of Patients With Sleep Disordered Breathing Treated With DreamStation...

Central Sleep ApneaMixed Sleep Apnea2 more

This multi-center observational study will prospectively collect data from patients who have an indication for servo ventilation therapy. This registry is intended to characterize the patient populations that may benefit from DreamStation BiPAP autoSV therapy (PR DS-autoSV, Philips Respironics, Monroeville, PA) in real life settings. In addition, this registry will assess adherence to the PR DS-autoSV therapy, the therapeutic benefits, collect morbidity and mortality data of servo ventilation in patients with central sleep apnea (CSA) and complex sleep-disordered breathing (SDB).

Cognitive Complaints in Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Cognition DisordersSleep Apnea Syndromes1 more

The study assesses cognitive complaints in newly diagnosed patients with obstructive sleep apnea with no medical-comorbity affecting cognition. Cognitive complaints will be compared to healthy controls matched on age, sex and educational level. Factors related to cognitive complaints will also be assessed, including anxiety and depressive symptoms, complaints of fatigue and sleepiness, quality of life, psychological coping strategies and objective measures of cognition. Patients starting treatment for sleep apnea (continuous positive airway pressure or mandibular repositioning device) will be reassessed on all measures after 6 months of treatment to study the impact of treatment as usual on cognitive complaints and its related factors.

Developing a Non-contact Sleep Apnoea Detector, Suitable for Home Studies- The Safescan Study

Sleep ApnoeaObstructive Sleep Apnoea

Sleep apnoea (SA) is a common condition in adults and children that causes disturbed sleep and daytime symptoms. It is characterised by disrupted breathing with disturbed sleep patterns. In adults this can lead to dangerous daytime sleepiness affecting for example driving performance. In children it may lead to hyperactivity in the day and poor school performance. There are a number of techniques for diagnosing the disorder but they can affect the quality of sleep which sometimes makes them inaccurate. Most are unsuitable for small children who cannot understand the value of the tests and tend to remove the monitoring wires and devices in the night. This study aims to validate a new non contact device "Safescan", based on low power radar technology, which can be put under a bed and record breathing patterns with no measuring device in contact with the sleeper. In this initial study the device will be validated in adults, against the gold standard of polysomnography (PSG) in the sleep laboratory at Royal Papworth Hospital.

Right Ventricular Function in Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

The purpose of this study is to determine whether patients with obstructive sleep apnea have any changes in right ventricular function evaluated by three dimensional echocardiography.

Prevalence of Sleep Apnea in Patients Presenting for Hip or Knee Replacement Surgery

Sleep ApneaObstructive

The study hypothesis is that the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea in patients presenting for total knee or total hip arthroplasty is higher than generally suspected. The study will include just one arm and results will be compared to a literature control group. Participants referred for preoperative evaluation will be screened using a standard questionnaire. Those at high risk of obstructive sleep apnea will then undergo a formal overnight sleep study (polysomnography).

Sleep Apnea After Extubation

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is common after extubation, approximately 71%, and is independently associated with hypertension and metabolic disease contributing to increased morbidity and mortality. Respiratory polygraphy is a simpler alternative to in-laboratory polysomnography for the management of more symptomatic patients with obstructive sleep apnea. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of sleep apnea after extubation by respiratory polygraphy.
