Sport Without Injury ProgrammE Floorball

Athletic Injuries

This study evaluates the preventive effect of a neuromuscular training program on injuries in youth floorball players. Half of participants will receive the training program, and half act as control and perform their usual training practices.

HIIT With an Eccentric Hamstring Exercise Program in Futsal Players

Athletic Injuries

Physiotherapy protocols based on high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or eccentric hamstring exercises like Nordic Curl (NC) have been scarcely studied in futsal players. The hypothesis of this study is that a HIIT combined with an NC exercise program is more effective than a HIIT-only program in improving physical and functional characteristics in futsal players.

Validation of Heat Stress Limit Values for the Athletic Performance

Physiological StressHeat Stress3 more

Three male and three female semi-professional athletes, ranging in age from 22 to 27, participated in a study that was done at Lund University in Sweden to examine their physiological responses. The temperature and relative humidity were adjusted at 40 degrees Celsius for hot, dry conditions and 31 degrees Celsius for hot, wet conditions, respectively. The participants were instructed to engage in physical activity on a treadmill within the chamber for 70 minutes, or until participants were able to continue their exercise without difficulty within the allotted period. Participants were instructed to walk (5 kph) and run (8 kph). Participants pulse rate, breathing rate, oxygen consumption, and subjective reactions were all recorded. On the basis of the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), a heat stress index, the American College of Sports Medicine has made certain suggestions. The technique used to determine the temperature on a Celsius scale took into account the influences of relative humidity, air temperature, wind, and direct sunlight radiation. The American College of Sports Medicine advises delaying athletic competition when the WBGT is above 28 degrees. In the climate control chamber, the trials were carried out in high-risk circumstances (28 degrees Celsius WBGT). According to the study's findings, exercise is influenced by weather, and as air temperature rises, so do the intensity of exertion and thermal feeling.

The Effect of a Behavioural Intervention on Injury Prevention Program Adherence in Female Youth...

Sport Injury

Soccer accounts for more than 10% of all sport injuries in youth requiring medical attention. The injury rates in youth soccer where there is no established injury prevention program are estimated at 22-30 injuries/100 participants/year, or 3.4-5.6 injuries/1000 participation hours. Risk reductions ranging from 32-43% have been found for youth players participating in neuromuscular training programs, such as the FIFA 11+, that include agility, balance training, and strengthening components. Although studies have shown that the FIFA 11+ is effective at reducing injuries, there is poor uptake of the program in the youth soccer community. It is therefore important to develop ways of delivering the program to soccer coaches and players in order to maximize its protective benefit. The Health Action Process Approach (HAPA) is a behavior change theory that has been used to successfully predict the uptake of health behaviours in a number of populations, such as cancer screening and exercise, but has not been tested in sport injury prevention settings. The primary objective of this study is to examine the effect of a HAPA-based coach education intervention on adherence to the FIFA 11+ in a group of female youth soccer players over the course of one outdoor and one indoor season. The secondary objective is to examine the dose-response relationship between program adherence and injury, comparing program adherence and injury rates in outdoor and indoor soccer. Our hypothesis is that teams whose coaches receive a HAPA-based intervention will have greater adherence to the program than teams whose coaches do not receive the intervention, and that that injury incidence will decrease as adherence to the program increases. It is expected that program adherence will be lower and injury rates will be higher in indoor soccer compared to outdoor soccer.

Screening Brain MRI in High School Football: Does the Guardian Cap Reduce the Risk of Traumatic...

Brain ConcussionBrain Injuries5 more

Screening Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with Fluid-attenuated Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) and Susceptibility Weighted Imaging (SWI) sequences will be performed pre and post season on high school football players. One set of players will wear the Guardian Cap on their five star rated helmets and the other will wear five star rated helmets only. The investigators will compare outcomes of ImPACT scores and MRI findings between the two groups to see if there is a statistical difference in reduction of injury and to establish what the baseline level of MRI findings related to injury from high school football is as well as what the baseline level of injury is prior to the start of the season.

Identification of Neuromusculoskeletal Variables Associated With Injury Risk and Performance in...

Athletic Injuries

The purpose of this study is to complete a neuromuscular performance assessment of high school athletes who are participating in school based pre-season strength and performance training program. The performance assessment will screen for existing muscle imbalances and strength deficits known to increase risk for sports injury, and provide a baseline performance measurement. Athletes will be measured before the start of the program and then again at the end of the pre-season training period to measure changes in motor coordination, muscle strength, and performance and injury risk category. Internal and external training load will be measured weekly during the training program to track intensity of the training program. In addition to the pre and post measurements, sports injury occurrence and time away from sports participation will be tracked throughout the sport season/school year to evaluate training program outcomes and accuracy of risk assessment.

Throwers Ten Exercises On Upper Extremity Function and Explosive Power in Wheelchair Basketball...

Upper Extremity InjurySport Injury2 more

Basketball is a challenging sport that requires participants to demonstrate physical fitness and special athletic skills at high levels. Players avoid contact while attempting to prevent the opponent from running, passing and shooting. Although basketball includes avoiding contact as a rule, contact between players is inevitable. Various injuries occur in basketball because it is a contact sport and includes sudden movements, such as bouncing, running and turning. Wheelchair (WC) basketball is characterised by manoeuvres and high-intensity activities such as rolling, rebounding, passing and overhead shooting. In WC basketball players, thoracic kyphosis is increased because of atrophy of the upper back and shoulders muscles resulting from the body posture required for WC propulsion in the sitting position as well as the effect of gravity. This sitting posture is characterised by scapular protraction and internal rotation of the humerus, and it impedes shoulder movements during upper-extremity use. Overhead throwing is a movement that involves high speed and repetitive movement that leads to upper-extremity injuries. It is important to develop muscle strength and proprioception to protect against these injuries. Throwers Ten exercise programme is a programme designed to improve the power, strength and endurance of large muscle groups required for the throwing activity. It consists of exercises involving the movement of upper limb joints in full range of joint motion (ROM) or at specified specific angles, with the help of a resistance band and weights specific to individual athletes. In the literature, no study has demonstrated the effectiveness of Throwers Ten exercise programme in these sports groups. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Throwers Ten exercise programme on upper-extremity function and explosive power in the WC basketball players and stand-up basketball players.
