Better and Safer Return to Sport

Anterior Cruciate Ligament InjuriesSport Injury

A prospective cohort design will be used to assess differences in outcomes between pivoting sport athletes with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) who follow usual care and those who follow a treatment algorithm with a RTS and rehabilitation tool. Athletes aged 15-40 at injury with primary ACLR who express a goal to return to sports with frequent pivoting are eligible. The RTS and rehabilitation tool includes standardized clinical, functional and muscle strength testing 6, 8, 10, and 12 months after surgery. Individual test results guide progression in sports participation and the content of further rehabilitation according to a standardized algorithm.

Sports injuries are a very important issue for baseball players. Previous studies have found that the incidence of sports injuries faced by baseball players is continuously increasing. Sports injury rates in professional baseball, high school baseball, and college baseball players were as high as 3.6, 4.6, and 5.8 per 1,000 players, respectively. The main cause of many pitching injuries is attributed to a large number of repetitive pitches. To avoid sports injuries, it is necessary to know how to assess the risk of injury caused by repetitive pitching. Throwing is a fairly complex action that requires the coordination of the entire body. It is critical to investigate the biomechanical changes of players in order to effectively analyze such complex movements.

Head InjurySport Injury

Two middle school (ages 11-14) football teams will be in Aim 1 of this study. All interested athletes on these teams will be invited to voluntarily participate in biomechanical data collection; of those enrolled, 15-20 per team will be randomly selected for instrumentation with head impact sensors. In aim 3, two youth football teams at the middle school level will be recruited to pilot an intervention developed this study. The football coaches of each team will be prospectively recruited and enrolled. All interested athletes on these teams will be enrolled; of those enrolled, 15-20 per team will be randomly selected for instrumentation with head impact sensors. Baseline and post-season neurocognitive data will be collected.

Psychological Readiness of Injured Athlete to Return to Sport

Clinicians are recommended to assess athletes during the rehabilitation phase to identify athletes with potentially maladaptive psychological responses to injury. Therefore, the Psychological Readiness of Injured Athlete to Return to Sport (PRIA-RS) questionnaire was developed to assess the athlete's psychological readiness to return to sport. The aim of this study was to adapt the PRIA-RS questionnaire into Turkish and to establish its validity and reliability. Serial approach method will be used while translating the questionnaire into Turkish. In order to evaluate the validity of PRIA-RS, The Re-injury Anxiety Inventory and Tampa Kinesiophobia Scale will be applied to the participants.
