The Effect of CrossFit Kids on Social Skills in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder (CrossFit...
Autism Spectrum DisorderThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1 in 59 U.S. children have been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Peer relationships, social skills, and repetitive behaviors are a challenge for those with ASD. Exercise in the ASD population has been examined as a means to improve some of these challenges for children with ASD. This research study will try to see if a structured exercise program called CrossFit Kids can help with these challenges. This study is potentially beneficial in developing an exercise program for children with ASD that can help promote social skill development, reduce stereotypical behaviors, and provide overall health benefits.
Feasibility and Safety of a Virtual-Reality Based Job Interview Training Tool in Teenagers With...
Autism Spectrum DisorderThe current project involves the application of a VR job training software. We propose to use an interactive VR job interview practice system, Virtual Reality Job Interview Training (VR-JIT), in youths with ASD at the highschool level. This system was developed to bolster job interview practice skills and to help reduce anxiety in adults with ASD. However, it has never before been used in individuals under the age of 18. Our hope is that if this program is utilized in individuals while they are still in highschool, we can target those persons before the window for which risk of unemployment appears to be highest for ASD youths, immediately after high school graduation.
The Multi-Media Social Skills Project for Adults
Autism Spectrum DisordersThis study is investigating the development of a social skills training program for adults with Asperger's Syndrome or high-functioning autism, ages 18 to 35 years. The Principal Investigator for this study is Dr. Michael Murray, the director of the Autism Studies Division at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. The purpose of this study is to adapt a social skills training program to address and enhance the social skills of adults with Asperger's Syndrome and high-functioning autism.
Sensorimotor Affect Relationship-based Therapy (SMART) for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders...
Autism Spectrum DisorderAutistic DisorderThe SMART Program at Nationwide Children's Hospital is an interdisciplinary social skills group that teaches children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) ages 2-12 the fundamental social skills necessary to build and maintain relationships. The manualized curriculum addresses skills such as joint attention, eye contact, play, and peer engagement. Currently individual goals are set for each child who participates and this is documented in the daily treatment note. In order to research group outcomes, the investigators will use parent questionnaires (an addition to current clinical practices) to measure changes in behavior after each 12 week session for up to one year of treatment. The investigators hypothesize that maladaptive behaviors will decrease and adaptive behaviors will increase in children with ASD after participation in the SMART program.
Feasibility and Effectiveness of Computerized Cognitive Training in Adolescents With Autism Spectrum...
Autism Spectrum DisorderThe investigators will conduct a randomized placebo-controlled trial of a computerized intervention targeting cognition in 30 teens with autism spectrum disorder.
FMRI Brain Activation of Aripiprazole Treatment in Autism Spectrum Disorders
Autism Spectrum DisorderThis is an 8 week research study of aripiprazole (abilify) which is used to reduce irritable behaviors in autism spectrum disorders. All participants will receive active study medication. Participants will also receive diagnostic and cognitive evaluations at no cost. Participants will be required to undergo two fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging scans) where we will take pictures of your brain while performing simple tasks.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids in the Treatment of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders
AutismPublished studies on omega 3 fatty acids in the treatment of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia have shown reductions in time to recurrence, a decrease in the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia, and improvements in Clinical Global Impression Scale, Young Mania Rating Scale, and HAM-D scores. The following are the hypotheses: Omega 3 fatty acids will be superior to placebo in the acute treatment of global autism. Omega 3 fatty acids will be superior to placebo in improving aggression and irritability associated with autism. Omega 3 fatty acids will be superior to placebo in improving functional ability.
School- and Home-Based Early Intervention for Toddlers With Autism
Autistic DisorderAutismThis study will determine the impact of early intervention on the communication and social development of toddlers with autism.
Investigation of Mechanisms of Action in Superpower Glass
Autism Spectrum DisorderAutismThe following study aims to understand the mechanism of action at work in a novel artificial intelligence (AI) tool that runs on Google Glass through an Android app to deliver social emotion cues to children with autism during social interactions. This study will examine 2 versions of software on the Google Glass based wearable intervention system. Participants will receive 1 of 2 versions of the software and use the device at home for 4 weeks. This novel device will use a camera, microphone, head motion tracker to analyze the behavior of the subject during interactions with other people. The system is designed to give participants non-interruptive social cues in real-time and will record social responses that can later be used to help aid behavioral therapy. It is hypothesized that both mechanisms under investigation will contribute to social gains in children over the 4 week period of use.
Improving Social Interaction for Adolescents With Autism During the Transition to Adulthood
Autism Spectrum DisorderTypical DevelopmentThis study compares the efficacy of two intervention strategies for improving social outcomes for autistic adolescents and young adults when interacting with unfamiliar non-autistic peers.
