Study Comparing Cortical Function and Dysfunction Tests in Low Back Pain

Chronic Nonspecific Low Back Pain

The purpose of this study is to explore the cortical regulation of the paraspinal muscles in chronic low back pain. These (possible) changes in regulatory mechanisms are being compared to other motor control tests in order to determine whether correlations are found. Furthermore the patients are being treated with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and tested afterwards. The purpose is to find out if rTMS-therapy is capable of normalizing motor control deficits.

Chronic Low Back Pain

The majority of the study consists of standard of care treatment for people with low back pain that has lasted more than three months. Half of the participants in the study will receive physical therapy from physical therapists that have received additional training in an educational technique. In order to determine if there is a difference in patient outcome when the educational technique is used, you will be asked to complete five short surveys before receiving physical therapy (10 minutes total). A sample of the physical therapy sessions using the educational technique will be videotaped. The videotape will be of the physical therapist to prove they did use the educational technique, not of you the participant in the study. You will remain anonymous and will not be used and the tape will not be used for publication or presentation purposes. You will also be asked to complete one survey after participating in physical therapy (2 minutes), and all five short surveys (10 minutes total) six weeks after your last physical therapy session. You will be put in one of 2 groups by chance (as in the flip of a coin). A computerized selection process will be used to assign participants to the study. You will not know if you are in the study group or the non-study group.

Orthoses that straighten the spine have been shown in studies to have a positive effect on pain, posture and the functional state of patients with a fresh vertebral fracture. The planned study investigates the effect of the orthosis "Spinomed active" in patients aged ≥ 65 years with at least one non-acute osteoporotic vertebral fracture (at least 3 months ago) and chronic back pain.

Massage With Frankincense and Myrrh Oil in Treating Chronic Low Back Pain

This randomized controlled study was conducted to determine the effect of massage with frankincense and myrrh oil in treating chronic low back pain. A total of 91 individuals over the age of 18 who agreed to participate in the study, who had no verbal communication problems, and who had complaints of low back pain for at least the past three months were included in the study. In this research, 3x2 (experiment, control and plasebo group x pre-test post-test) split plot design was used The data were collected using the data sheet, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Aberdeen Low Back Pain Scale (ALBPS) and Roland-Morris Disability Scale (RMDS). Standard treatment was applied to all three groups for three weeks, every weekday. In addition to the standard treatment, 2 sessions of waist massage per week were applied to the aromatherapy Group with frankincense and myyrh essential oil and to the Placebo Group with jojoba fixed oil in accordance with the aromatherapy protocol. Massage was not applied to the control group. In the results of working, the decrease in RMDS (p <0.001), ALBPS (p <0.001) and VAS (p <0.001) scores of the aromatherapy group was found to be statistically higher than the other two groups. As a result, aromatherapy massage with Fankincense and Myyrh essential oil can be added to traditional treatments as an easy-to-apply complementary health application with no significant side effects to relieve pain and reduce disability in an individual's daily life in chronic low back pain patient care.

Although pregnancy is a natural process, it is a period in which some bio-physiological changes are experienced. These changes cause low back pain by affecting the musculoskeletal system as well as the endocrine, cardiovascular and renal systems. Pregnancy-related low back pain is defined as recurrent pain in the lumbopelvic region lasting more than one week. It can manifest itself in pregnancy as low back pain, lumbar pain, pelvic pain and lumbopelvic pain where both are present. In order to cope with low back pain in pregnancy and to increase the quality of life, low back pain should be evaluated in antenatal and postnatal follow-ups. Risk factors should be examined, women in the risk group should be identified, their low back pain experience should be questioned, prevention and coping strategies and the effect of low back pain on their quality of life should be evaluated. Healthy lifestyle programs should be developed to help prevent low back pain and develop coping strategies for pregnant women with low back pain.
