Blinding Assessment of Manual Therapy Interventions of the Back in Swiss Graduate Students

Back PainBack Disorder2 more

There is marked uncertainty regarding the feasibility of achieving adequate blinding in randomized controlled trials of manual therapy. In other words, whether participants and outcome assessors can accurately perceive randomly assigned interventions is unclear. This feasibility trial was conducted as part of a doctoral epidemiology course at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. Within the practice-based context of the class and using a study population of healthy graduate students enrolled in the course, the investigators aimed to evaluate blinding of participants randomly assigned (similar to tossing a coin) to one of two manual therapy interventions (active versus control). The investigators also aimed to assess blinding among outcome assessors.

Feasibility of Using Functional Progression to Guide the Treatment of Adolescent Low Back Pain

Low Back PainSpondylolysis1 more

The goal of the proposed research is to test the feasibility of a functional progression program to reduce cost and possible radiation exposure for adolescent athletes with low back pain. Specifically the investigators plan to test the feasibility of using progression in rehabilitation to pragmatically differentially diagnose and treat adolescent athletes with low back pain, instead of using advanced imaging which is the current practice. The investigators propose to recruit 20 participants, with 10 of usual care (advanced imaging) and 10 of proposed intervention (functional progression) to assess the feasibility of using functional progress to guide treatment. The outcomes measured will be number of days for rest, time to start regular rehabilitation, pain experienced, functional outcomes, ability to return to sport, time needed to return to sport. If this pilot demonstrates the feasibility and a decreased rate of advanced imaging and similar clinical outcomes the investigators plan to progress this work into larger trials.

Online Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Workbook

Low Back Pain

This research will evaluate the efficacy of a new online self- help intervention, the Wellness Workbook, for individuals with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Participants will be randomly assigned to use the Wellness Workbook or alternative self-help materials and assessed at baseline, post-intervention (10 weeks) and at follow-up (18 weeks). Outcome measures include pain-related disability and pain severity.

Development of a Web-Based Interactive Patient Decision Aid for the Treatment of Acute Low Back...

Acute Low Back PainDepression

Shared decision making (SDM) has been advocated as an appropriate approach for physician patient communication. Positive effects of SDM are e.g higher patient satisfaction, greater treatment adherence, lower decisional conflict and better clinical outcomes. The Section of Clinical Epidemiology and Health Services Research at the University Medical Center in Freiburg (Germany) is developing and evaluating a web-based interactive decision aid ("patient dialogue") to support shared decision making in cooperation with the Techniker Krankenkasse, a large German health insurance company. Both development and evaluation are conducted along the International Patient Decision Aid Standards (IPDAS). The decision aid contains information on acute low back pain and depression and addresses insurance members who are facing a treatment decision in one of the indications. It aims at the development of patient competencies for participating in decision making, the support of constructive health behavior and patients' acceptance of evidence based treatment options. In an RCT the decision aid will be compared to a regular patient information on a sample of N=500 patients in each group. Data collection will take place at three points of time: before and after use of the decision aid as well as 3 months later.

Study Care Versus Usual Care for Acute Mechanical Lower Back Pain

Low Back PainMechanical

The most common work-related injury in British Columbia every year is a lower back injury. The many different treatment options that are available to workers with a back injury have often led to confusion and frustration. New back pain research has shown which combinations of treatments are most helpful, but has also shown that many injured workers in British Columbia do not have these treatments made readily available to them. This research study is designed to accurately determine whether or not providing patients suffering from acute back injuries with a combination of all of these recommended treatments, will improve their function, quality of life and return to work.

Effects of an Exercise Program Under Supervision and Unsupervised in the Treatment of Low Back

Low Back Pain

ABSTRACT: Low back pain is one of the most frequent causes of incapacity. The prevalence of this syndrome is 60-85% for the survival of the individuals. Among the most promising strategies of low back pain intervention, is the physical activity that is usually associated with a long list of health benefits.
