U.S. Study of Fibrocaps in Surgical Hemostasis

Postoperative Hemorrhage

The purpose of this study was to characterize the safety and hemostatic activity of topical Fibrocaps in surgical patients when control of mild to moderate bleeding by standard surgical techniques was ineffective and/or impractical.

Study of Fibrinogen Concentrate (Human) (FCH) to Control Bleeding During Complex Cardiovascular...

Surgical Blood LossPostoperative Blood Loss

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that Fibrinogen Concentrate (Human)(FCH) can reduce the amount of donor blood products needed during complex cardiovascular surgery, and that it is safe and well tolerated. Subjects in this study will get either a FCH or placebo infusion during surgery. This will be in addition to the standard treatment, which is donor blood or blood products. Placebo does not contain any effective medicine. The study is randomised. This means that the likelihood that subjects will get FCH or placebo is 50%. To make the comparison between FCH and placebo as fair as possible, the study is "double blind". This means that neither the subjects nor the study doctor will know if FCH or placebo is administered. If necessary, the study doctor can find out which treatment the subjects are receiving.

Tonsillectomy Using BiZact™ - a Randomized Side-controlled Clinical Trial

Tonsillitis ChronicTonsillectomy6 more

Tonsillectomies are frequently followed by severe postoperative pain, hence high analgetics consumption and prolonged hospitalization. Also, postoperative hemorrhages can be hazardous. Constant evaluation of surgical techniques is paramount to improve safety and cost-effectiveness. Frequently tonsillectomies are performed in cold steel technique. Aim of this study will be the evaluation of handling, surgical time, postoperative pain and postoperative hemorrhage rates using the BiZactTM-Device in comparison to traditional techniques on the contralateral side. In one patient, two different techniques will be used. The primary objective will be the surgical time. Regardless of surgeon handedness, surgeons will randomly be assigned to either start with the left or right tonsil, and randomly either to start with the BiZact™ Device or with "cold steel" methods. Additionally, time to stop bleeding, intraoperative blood loss, tonsil mobility, device handling, as well as wound healing will be assessed.

CPPF After Cardiac Surgery in High Risk Patients

Cardiac Surgical ProceduresRetained Blood Syndrome2 more

In two randomized clinical trials the investigators have demonstrated that continuous postoperative pericardial flushing (CPPF) therapy can reduce postoperative blood loss and bleeding-related complications after cardiac surgery and that CPPF therapy is safe and feasible in an experimental setting. The Haermonics investigational device is a novel medical device that enables CPPF therapy to be used in daily clinical setting. The aim of this study is three-fold. First, to evaluate the safety and functionality of the Haermonics investigational device. Secondly, to investigate the effect of CPPF therapy on bleeding related complications in the adulty cardiac surgery population. Thirdly, to explore the effect of CPPF therapy on intraluminal chest tube clogging.

Evaluating Perioperative Dexamethasone and the Risk of Bleeding in Tonsillectomy

Post-operative Hemorrhage

Tonsillectomy (removal of the tonsils) is a very common surgery in children. Bleeding after tonsillectomy is one of the risks of this surgery and can be more dangerous in children since they have less blood volume than adults. In order to improve recovery after tonsillectomy, steroids (medication that is a strong anti-inflammatory) are often given during the surgery. Recently, a study showed steroids given at the time of tonsillectomy increase the risk of bleeding significantly over children who did not receive steroids. This finding has raised concerns in the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) community since most ENT's use steroids during tonsillectomy in children. The investigators look to explore this question further. To answer the question of whether perioperative steroid administration significantly affects the rate of post-tonsillectomy bleeding, the investigators propose to test the following hypotheses in a prospective, randomized, blinded placebo-controlled trial: dexamethasone does not cause an increase in post-operative bleeding rate in tonsillectomy.

Application of Iced Normal Saline Combined With Cocktail Perfusion in Total Knee Arthroplasty

PainPostoperative2 more

Sixty patients undergoing TKA were divided into three groups, then three different intro-operative articular cavity perfusion treatment was given according to the randomized, double-blind and controlled rule. One way ANOVA analysis on visual analogue scale (VAS) score, functional recovery, drainage, and edema of the affected limb were performed to assess the efficiency of the treatment in the following three days after the operation.

Prevention of Postoperative Bleeding in Subcapital Femoral Fractures

Hip FractureBlood Loss

The main hypothesis of this clinical trial is that the use of intra-articular tranexamic acid and the fibrin glue plus usual hemostasis will reduce at least a 25% the postoperative blood loss with respect to usual hemostasis in patients undergoing subcapital femoral fractures.
