Effect of Whole-Body Vibration on Plasma Sclerostin Level

Osteopenia

The aim of this study is to investigate effect of whole-body vibration on plasma sclerostin level in healthy young adult women. Fifteen healthy young adult women are planned to include in this study. All cases will be trained on a whole-body vibration (WBV) platform (Power Plate) 5 times a week for one week period. Training duration will be short at the beginning but progressed slowly. The amplitude of vibration will be 2 mm and the frequency of the vibration will be 40 Hz. The subjects will be asked to report negative side effects or adverse reactions in their training diary. Previbration and postvibration (just after, 10.minute and 30.minute) levels of plasma sclerostin will be measured on first, second and fifth day of experiment. Sclerostin levels will be measured by human sclerostin ELISA kit.

Risedronate Therapy in the Treatment of Low Bone Mineral Density in Crohn's Disease

The occurrence of bone loss in Crohn's disease patients is an important clinical problem for both patients with and without active disease. While therapy does exist for treatment and prevention of low BMD, evidence of its efficacy in Crohn's disease patients is lacking. The current standard of therapy in Canada for the treatment of osteoporosis is etidronate, with adequate calcium and vitamin D supplementation. The primary objective of the study is to assess the efficacy of risedronate, compared to placebo, administered once-weekly, in the treatment of low BMD of the spine and hip in patients with Crohn's disease at 12 months, based on an intention-to-treat analysis.

Effects of Naturally Silicon-Rich Water on Bone Metabolism in Women

The aim of this research study is to determine by laboratory analyses the effects of drinking silicon-rich water on bone health. This will be determined from blood and urine samples from subjects who will be asked to drink 1 liter per day of either silicon-rich water or water without silicon for 12 weeks.

Wearable Vibration Device to Prevent Bone Loss in Postmenopausal Women--Aim 2

The wearable vibration device aims to consistently deliver vibrations directly to the hip and spine and allowing use during many everyday activities. We propose that demonstrating higher rates of compliance and consistent delivery of optimal force, with accelerometer feedback, will provide a superior alternative to whole body vibration and is plausibly more effective at preventing bone loss in postmenopausal women than vibration platforms in the home setting.

To characterize the effects of discontinuation of denosumab therapy on variables of bone histology in postmenopausal women with low bone mass or osteoporosis. Patients who have received denosumab and completed study 20050179 (NCT00293813), completed study 20050141 (NCT00330460), completed study 20060237 (NCT00515463), completed study 20030216 (NCT00089791) but did not enroll in study 20060289 (NCT00523341) will be included in this study. Patients who will participate in the off-treatment imaging study for 20080747 (NCT00890981) are also eligible.

Functional Exercise and Nutrition Education Program for Older Adults

There is strong evidence that specific types of exercise can improve health and physical function in older adults. While community exercise classes exist, many older adults with chronic conditions may need guidance from credentialed exercise professionals to ensure sufficient dose and progression and to address fears or low exercise self-efficacy. Furthermore, low protein intake among older adults is common and initiating exercise when nutrition is inadequate may cause weight loss and limit gains in muscle strength. The primary goal is to determine the feasibility of implementing the MoveSTroNg program under real-world conditions, measured through referral and recruitment to the program and study retention and adherence rates.

Osteoporotic vertebral fractures often lead to postural changes, chronic spinal pain conditions and limited functionality. Orthoses that straighten the spine have been shown in studies to have a positive effect on pain, posture and the functional state of patients with a fresh vertebral fracture. The planned study investigates the effect of the orthosis "Spinomed active" in patients aged ≥ 65 years with at least one non-acute osteoporotic vertebral fracture (at least 3 months ago) and chronic back pain.
