The overall objective of this study is to (1) determine whether thermal imaging can be used during an acute trauma patient's secondary or tertiary survey to identify injury sites with an underlying fracture, and to (2) investigate whether thermal imaging can predict those patients whose fractures will result in a non-union.

The purpose of the research is to perform a quality assurance evaluation using randomized prospective analysis the rate of orbital cellulitis as a complication of nonsurgical orbital blowout fracture in patients treated versus not treated with prophylactic antibiotics. The investigators goal is to show the use of prophylactic antibiotics in orbital blowout fractures does not significantly decrease the rate of orbital cellulitis and is thus not indicated.

Correlation of Bispectral Index Score and Total Intravenous Anesthesia (TIVA)

General Anesthesia is usually produced by an intravenous agent and then maintained with a breathing agent till the surgery is completed. However, there is a recent trend to produce and maintain general anesthesia solely with an intravenous agent, such as propofol, in view of its advantages. This delivery method is called Total Intravenous Anesthesia (TIVA). The depth of general anesthesia can be measured by an anesthetic depth monitoring device called Bispectral Index (BIS). The use of BIS to determine the depth of anesthesia has been well established whenever a breathing agent is used to maintain general anesthesia. However, the validity of using BIS with TIVA has not been adequately investigated. This study will compare the BIS values at different doses of TIVA in order to establish any correlation between the two. If such a correlation is established, BIS monitoring can safely be recommended to determine anesthetic depth under TIVA.

The primary aim of the study is to create a model; in order to examine the effects of neural trauma in patients that are healthy individuals, induced by controlled nasal fractures during rhinoplasty, and the regeneration process in the weeks/months that follow. This study includes monitoring of subjective nasal symptoms with a visual analogue scale (VAS) score, peak nasal inspiratory flow (PNIF) measurements, collection of nasal secretions and nasal provocation (response to capsaicin and cold dry air (CDA) exposure).

Nurse Led Ultrasound Guided Femoral Nerve Block in the Emergency Department

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of task shifting from anesthesiologists to special trained nurses performing femoral nerve block (FNB) in patients with hip fracture in the emergency department (ED) at Vestfold Hospital Trust (VHT). A sample of nurses (n= 6) will perform ultrasound guided FNB in hip fracture patients (n=25) admitted to the ED at VHT. This cohort will be compared to another cohort of hip fracture patients (n=25). This cohort will follow standard of care where the femoral nerve block is often performed by anesthesiologists. The study is a prospective, controlled randomized trial.

This is a randomised, double-blind, placebo controlled study to evaluate the efficacy of Methoxyflurane (Penthrox®) for the treatment of acute pain during closed nasal fracture reduction. The study aims to provide evidence under blinded controlled conditions that Penthrox is safe and effective in patients aged 18 to 65 years during closed nasal fracture reduction.
