Although several studies have studied the predictive nature of non-accidental trauma of the different types of fractures and in particular on the femur, the physiological and radiological particularities of the child make it difficult to estimate the age of a fracture and require defining a chronology specific to the specificities of the pediatric population. Some authors have carried out work for the dating of fractures, however the number of cases or the average age of the subjects does not allow a precise estimation of the chronology of evolution of the fractures.

Pocket Sized Ultrasound (PsUS) and Pediatric Elbow Fractures

The main purpose of this project is to investigate the accuracy of pocket-sized ultrasound (PsUS) in the diagnosis of pediatric elbow fractures. The primary research objective is to determine the test performance characteristics of PSUS performed by pediatric emergency medicine physicians compared to radiography for the detection of pediatric elbow fractures. The project will consist of two parts, first involving a feasibility study and followed by an active study. The feasibility study will aim to answer if providers can perform an adequate elbow ultrasound exam after a brief study training. The active study will investigate the initial accuracy of the PsUS. Participants will be asked in either the feasibility or the active phases of the study to undergo a brief pocket-sized ultrasound elbow exam of both elbows. Patient will continue to receive their previously determined clinical ED management. In the active phase of the study, participant's elbow X-rays or if patient underwent bedside nursemaid reduction will be the comparison to pocket-sized ultrasound images.

The Canadian Prospective Pragmatic Perilunate Outcomes Trial

This is a unique three-fold prospective and retrospective study. With this approach, all previous and current PLIs presented at participating study sites will have the potential to be included in the study. Our goal is to collect all relevant injury and surgical parameters of the Perilunate spectrum. The investigators plan to identify each hospital within Canada that normally treats PLIs and to record injury and demographic information on each PLI that occurs in this country over a two to three-year period. Our protocol includes scheduled two, five, and 10-year follow-up intervals.
