Relationship Between Bronchial Asthma and COVID-19 Infection in Adults: Clinical and Laboratory...

AsthmaCOVID-19

Background: Asthma is still considered a major chronic respiratory disease that affects a large number in the world. The association between COVID-19 infection and asthma was studied in different ways focusing on hospital admitted patients. This study aimed to evaluate the relation between asthma and COVID-19 infection in adults attending outpatient pulmonary clinic over three successive months from clinical and laboratory point of view. Patients and methods: The current study collected 1309 patients attending the outpatient pulmonary clinic of a Saudi Arabian private Hospital over three successive months from 1st of December 2020 to the end of February 2021. Patients were divided into three groups; Group 1: COVID-19 infected with asthma (312), Group 2: COVID-19 infected with no asthma (286) and Group 3: COVID-19 non-infected with asthma (300).

The Role of Genetic Factors in the Development of Bronchial Asthma in the Kazakh Population

Bronchial AsthmaGenome Wide Association Studies

To research for a genetic marker of bronchial asthma, a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis of DNA obtained from the peripheral blood of patients with bronchial asthma and normal control will be performed.

Regulation of CCL18 by Corticosteroids in Severe Asthma

Asthma

The majority of asthmatic patients are well controlled by inhaled corticosteroid treatment, however some severe asthma resist this treatment. CCL18 is a target gene for corticosteroids and its dysfunction may correlate with phenotypes of asthma.

Evaluation of Novel Lung Function Parameters in Patients With Bronchial Asthma

Bronchial AsthmaPulmonary Healthy Controls

Current guideline-based criteria defining bronchial asthma do not always meet the challenges set by the complex pathophysiology of the disease. The investigators therefore aimed to evaluate novel or not widely used functional diagnostic approaches for the detection and therapeutic monitoring of patients with asthma.

Smartphone Enabled Detection of Nocturnal Cough Rate and Sleep Quality as a Prognostic Marker for...

AsthmaCough

The purpose of the study is to explore the value which cough rate might provide for asthma self-management. In this study, the focus will be specifically on nocturnal cough rate. The plan is to use a longitudinal study design, in order to investigate to which extent trends in the nocturnal cough rates might have meaningful implications for future asthma control and asthma exacerbations of patients. The incidence of nocturnal cough in asthmatics will be described and visualized over the course of one month in the first stage of the study. Additionally, the aim will be to identify and model trends in nocturnal cough rates. Measuring cough is very time-consuming. Currently, there are no cough frequency monitors available, which measure cough rates in a fully automated and unobtrusive way. Consequently, manual labeling of cough based on video or sound recordings is still considered to be the gold standard for measuring cough rates by medical guidelines. Recently, a machine learning algorithm was successfully designed to automatically detect cough in a proof of concept study. This machine learning algorithm will be further developed in order to provide robust results in the field. The focus of this study will be the cough during the night time due to the limited interfering noise, which greatly facilitates manual labeling and enables a more reliable detection rate of the machine learning algorithm. Apart from developing a machine learning algorithm for cough detection, data will be gathered for the assessment of patient's sleep quality based on data obtained from smartphone's sensors.

Real World Study With Benralizumab in Severe Asthma in Switzerland

Severe Eosinophilic Asthma

BEEPS describes the utility of patient reported outcomes (PRO) as simple, pragmatic, and sensitive tool to assess early treatment response of benralizumab to document the level of asthma control and change in medication after 1 to 16 weeks post-treatment initiation including use of OCS. The generated data on the time of asthma symptom relief after initiation of benralizumab will support patient management for a better disease control in severe asthma patients under benralizumab treatment. To assess long term outcomes the patients will have a last mandatory visit after 56 weeks, with no visits scheduled between week 16 and 56.

Utilization of Fixed Combination (Budesonide/Formoterol and Salmeterol/Fluticasone and Beclomethasone/Formoterol)...

Asthma

Moderate and severe asthma bronchiale is treated by fixed combination (budesonide/formoterol or salmeterol/fluticasone) in the Czech Republic. There is a hypothesis that doctors should prescribe to each patients per year: six units of fixed combination budesonide/formoterol, or seven units of fixed combination budesonide/formoterol in approach SMART, or twelve units of fixed combination salmeterol/fluticasone. With regard to current prices the treatment by fixed combination budesonide/formoterol should cost less. The investigators do not have any data about real life utilization of fixed combination in asthma treatment in Czech Republic The investigators propose to conduct a non-interventional multicentric retrospective epidemiological study looking into the patients records kept by specialist - allergists and pulmologists. Retrospective data for eligible patients will be reviewed by participating investigators, physicians taking care of their patients, and recorded in the electronic CRF. Only patients who have been treated for asthma bronchiale (classification of severity - moderate or severe persistent asthma) with fixed combination for at least one year could be included into the study. There are no scheduled visits for any patient participating in the study.
