AsthmaPatients' satisfaction with their asthma medication devices is usually decided by using properly designed questionnaires. These questionnaires are to be used to evaluate patients' opinion, which is considered very important for the selection of a device. The Feeling of Satisfaction with Inhaler (FSI-10) is a self-completed questionnaire designed to assess the patient opinion regarding the satisfaction and usability of the inhalers irrespectively of the drug used. It consists of 10 question each with 5 possible responses on a 5-point Likert scale scored from 5 to 1, respectively. The total score can range between 10 and 50. The higher the score, the higher the feeling of patient satisfaction from the inhaler.

CARATKids: Italian Validation of Asthma and Allergic Rhinitis Control Test in Children
Allergic RhinitisAsthmaThis project is an observational study for the Italian language validation of the CARATKids questionnaire investigating the asthma and coexisting allergic rhinitis control in children. 113 patients with concomitant asthma and allergic rhinitis followed up from at least 3 months will be enrolled for the validation process at outpatient clinic of Pediatric Allergology & Pulmonology (PAP) of Respiratory Disease Research Center (RDRC) within the Institute of Biomedicine and Molecular Immunology (IBIM) of the National Research Council (CNR) of Palermo (RDRC-IBIM CNR), Italy. The study will be completed in two medical examination, within 3-6 weeks of each other. CARATKids questionnaire, VAS (Visual Analogic Scale) and C-ACT (Children Asthma Control Test) will be filled by each patient. The main outcome is the Italian language validation of the CARATKids questionnaire investigating the coexisting asthma and allergic rhinitis control in children.

Identification of Molecular Biomarkers to Stratify Patients With Refractory Asthma
AsthmaThe purpose of this study is to learn more about asthma in people who are not well-controlled with current asthma medication (refractory asthma). The investigators will compare data from refractory asthmatic patients here at National Jewish Health to mild asthmatics subjects and to people without asthma. Study experiments involve looking at samples from all 3 groups and comparing them at a molecular level. These laboratory experiments may help identify subtypes of refractory asthmatics that require different treatments.
Analysis of Fel d 1-specific T Cells After Airway Allergen Challenge in Asthma
Allergic AsthmaCat allergies are a major trigger of asthma. Therapies are being developed to control the allergic response to cats. We are interested in measuring a type of white blood cell which is linked to cat allergies, which will help us understand how to use new therapies in people who suffer from cat allergies and asthma. We will study cat-allergic individuals with stable, mild asthma who will be exposed to cat allergens. We will measure various white blood cells, including the cells that are linked to cat allergies, to determine whether the number of these cells changes following cat exposure. These cells will be measured from the blood and bone marrow by removing samples using a needle. These cells will also be measured from the lungs by inserting a bronchoscope into the airways and drawing up fluid containing cells. This study will improve our understanding of the harmful versus protective role of these cat-specific cells, and will allow for development of better drugs for treatment of asthma triggered by cat exposure.
Contraceptive Use and Respiratory Conditions Among Scottish Women
AsthmaStudies examining the sex differences in the epidemiology and morbidity patterns of asthma show that the rates of disease severity, healthcare utilisation, and poor quality of life are considerably higher in women than in men, and this has been attributed to endogenous and exogenous sex hormonal factors. Studies examining the impact of use of hormonal contraceptives on the risk of asthma and asthma-related conditions are few, yet findings are conflicting. In the present study, the investigators utilize data from the Scottish Health Survey, a national representative sample, to investigate the associations between current use of hormonal contraceptives and the prevalence of self-reported doctor-diagnosed current asthma and wheezing symptoms in Scottish women. The investigators hypothesize that while current use of any hormonal contraceptives and combined oral pills are associated with higher prevalence of asthma and asthma outcomes, current use of progesterone-only contraceptives is not associated with asthma. A secondary aim of the current study is to examine whether there is evidence of any biological interaction between use of hormonal contraceptives and BMI in relation to the risk of asthma and asthma outcomes.
