Volunteering Program for Chinese Dementia Caregivers

Caregiver Burnout

Although many older Chinese Americans are expected to need intensive care because of cognitive impairment, a large gap exists in development of culturally sensitive interventions to reduce stress among caregivers in Chinese American communities. This research project will develop and pilot test a culturally sensitive intervention, the peer mentoring program (PMP), which is informed by the sociocultural stress and coping model. This project will generate preliminary data for a larger randomized controlled trial for efficacy or effectiveness testing of PMP, which is an innovative intervention to support dementia among Chinese Americans, by empowering the existing human resources of experiential caregivers in the same ethnic community.

MIND: Care Coordination for Community-living Person With Dementia

DementiaCaregiver Burden

This is a 24-month, prospective, single- blind, randomized controlled trial evaluating the MIND at Home-streamlined dementia care coordination intervention (called MIND-S) in a cohort of 300 community-living persons with dementia and their family caregivers in the Greater Baltimore area. Participants receiving MIND-S will get 18 months of care coordination by an interdisciplinary team comprised of trained memory care coordinators (non-clinical), a psychiatric nurse, and geriatric psychiatrist. The intervention involves 4 key components: identification of needs and individualized care planning (persons with dementia (PWD) and care giver (CG) needs); dementia education and skill building; coordination, referral and linkage of services; and care monitoring.Participants in the comparison group will receive an initial in-home needs assessment and will be given the written results along with any recommendations for care that are indicated.

Support for Caregivers of Older Adults With Cognitive Decline

Caregiver BurdenDepression5 more

This randomized control study is to test effectiveness of occupational therapy support for informal caregivers of older adults with cognitive decline. Care recipients are community-living older adults who are eligible for a nursing home level of care. At baseline challenges that caregivers are facing will be expressed and individualized solutions will be identified and delivered for the treatment and educational material will be given to the control group. Two and four months later, follow up interview will be made to identify changes in burden, depression, fatigue, self-efficacy, and positive aspect of care giving. It is expected to show when the effectiveness becomes clear.

Effect of Post-stroke Discharge Training

StrokeCaregiver Burnout

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of post-stroke discharge training and telephone counseling service on patients' functional status and caregiver burden. The study was conducted with 69 stroke patients (34 in the intervention group and 35 in the control group) and their caregivers. In the study, data were collected before discharge and three months after discharge. Discharge training and telephone counseling (one week after discharge and once a month for three months) were given to the caregivers of the patients in the intervention group.

The Effects of Mindfulness-based Breathing Therapy

Palliative Supportive CareCare Giving Burden

Aims and objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of mindfulness-based breathing therapy on the levels of perceived stress, caregiver burden and burnout in caregivers of palliative care patients. Background: It is extremely important to develop evidence-based strategies to protect the psychological health of caregivers, who are part of palliative care, to increase their quality of life and to facilitate their adaptation to the palliative care process. Design: This was a prospective, single-blind, randomised controlled study. The study complied with the guidelines of Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT). Methods: A total of 100 caregivers were randomly assigned to intervention group (n = 50) and control group (n = 50). This single-blinded randomized controlled trial was conducted at the palliative care unit of a private hospital, between May-November 2021. Personal information form, caregiver strain index (CSI), Zarit burden interview (ZBI) and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) were used for data collection.

Caregiver Support Model & Psycho-Education Program On Empowerment: Development and Validation

Caregiver BurnoutCase Management1 more

This Project aims to provide social workers and relevant human service professionals with a comprehensive, scientific, and validated service model and suggest a sustainable support framework on the working process of helping and empowering family caregivers of frail elders, reducing caregiving distress, and enhancing caregivers' quality of life. The proposed Project consists of two parts to be conducted in 1 year. The first part focuses on the development and validation of Caregiver Support Model (CSM) with a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) study. The second part develops and validates a psycho-education program on empowering family caregivers with another Randomized Controlled design. In the first year, the Project Team have (1) developed and designed different components of the Caregiver Support Model (CSM), including a comprehensive need assessment tool, personalized Caregiver Intervention Plan Guidelines and Template, and online database on caregiver services and community resources, (2) designed a five-session psycho-education program on empowerment. The Caregiver Needs Assessment (CNA) tool was also pilot-tested with 320 community caregivers. Results from the survey, together with the systematic review on caregiver support, will form the backbone of the later CNA implementation. The working model will be validated using RCT design with 400 family caregivers recruited through 4 collaborating NGOs. At the same time, a psycho-education program on empowerment will be developed and validated using RCT design with another 190 caregivers.

Coaching Intervention for Caregivers of Persons With Stroke

Caregiver Stress SyndromeCaregiver Burnout2 more

Caregivers of people with stroke experience strain that can reduce their quality of life. Caregivers are routinely engaged during hospital discharge for education and training related to the person with stroke. However, the critical period after stroke survivor's discharge is largely unsupported for the caregiver. This proposed study is a randomized controlled trial that will provide post-discharge support for caregivers using a health coaching program as compared to usual care and examine its effect of caregivers and people with stroke.

Anticipated Versus Actual Patient and Caregiver Burden Following Ambulatory Orthopedic Surgery

StressPsychological1 more

In 2011, 38.6 million hospital stays occurred in the United States at a cost of $387.2 billion. 47.9 percent involved hospitalizations during which surgical procedures were performed. Orthopedic procedures constituted the most frequently performed and most costly of operating room procedures. As the healthcare climate in the United States continues to change, there is a trend towards providing effective care in a fiscally conservative manner. Central to this strategy is the shift towards increasing ambulatory surgical procedures from surgeries requiring post-operative admission for patients. While savings to hospitals and third-party payers are implied, there may be an unrecognized increase in financial, physical, and psychosocial post-operative costs to patients undergoing ambulatory surgery and to their caregivers. Rawal et al., and McGarth and colleagues have found that patients undergoing orthopedic procedures had moderate to severe post-operative pain. We propose to present a survey to patients and their caregivers before surgery and at multiple timepoints post-operatively to acquire information on the impacts of ambulatory orthopedic surgery. In addition to assessing post-operative pain, this study serves to examine various other possible burdens to patients that have not been previously evaluated in this patient population.
